Wheeler to replace Lidge as closer

04/09/2007 1:27 PM ET

By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

Manager Phil Garner announced prior to Monday's series opener with the Chicago Cubs that Brad Lidge will not be closing games for the Astros in the foreseeable future.

"Brad will not be closing as a general rule," Garner said. "There may be a situation where it will be right to do it, but we'll probably pitch him earlier in the sixth or seventh inning."

Dan Wheeler will be the primary closer for the Astros.

Yeah, the kind of info I would like to have had before setting my line-up. Congrats to the Wheeler owners smart enough to just let him sit in their active roster.

Very glad to see this news as I drafed Wheeler in the 18th round with hopes of this. Unfortunately, I just benched him last night to get an extra starter in the lineup. Oh well, next week I'll get him back in...Finally some good news for my team that is off to a really slow start. :D

IM also very happy with this move , i got WHEELER IN THE 22nd round of the Ultimate.

His avg draft position is late 19 , so to get him here is a little lucky. In my main event he went 19th round to the guy who took LIDGE in the 7th,so this shouldnt hurt him too much.

A VERY SMART MOVE , TO HAVE BACKED YOURSELF UP WITH WHEELER IF YOU DID DRAFT LIDGE.
