looking for some advice on punting

I am doing this 13 team league and I wanna punt saves. I have never tried this before but this league will be pretty competitive and I think that that its winnable without the saves category. I was just lookin for any advice from people who have tried this method or have any opinions on the matter

Is your league 4x4 or a 5x5?

If 4x4 (no strikeouts), you can solidify your ERA and ratio by using guys like high-upside middle relievers instead of closers. The auction money (or high draft slots) you saved by not going after closers can get you an ace pitcher or better hitters. It's not a bad strategy at all.

If your league is 5x5 (runs and strikeouts), I would advise against this strategy. If you try to compete in the other 9 categories, you'll wreck your ERA and ratio. If you try using middle relievers, you won't dominate in strikeouts and wins. In the end, if everything went right, it might work -- but more than likely you'll end up with a team that's competitive but doesn't win.

Anything is possible, but I agree. It is more "possible" to ditch one category like saves in a 4x4 league (sans strikeouts) than a 5x5 league.

I have heard it is also possible in an 11x11 league, but I have never tried that strategy myself.

PM the Thelan's. Two NFBC Championships using this strategy.

I am with Gordon on this one though, why would you go into the draft with this set strategy in mind?

If the opportunity presents itself in the sixth through 15th round that this would be a good strategy, then go for it. Look at your team and assess as you go.

JEagle , i would at least grab one closer in the later rounds , you might get lucky and get a lot of saves out of a late pick . Then if you can hit one on the waiver wire which happens every year your back in the closer game for just a late pick.

it's not that I feel the need to, it's just something I have wanted to try and I think this league would be the league that it could work. I think Eddies advice about grabbing a closer late may be worth trying..I'm not really sure what I am gonna do I just know that I wanna try a little something different

He drafted an iffy-at-best saves candidate (Rocky Biddle) something like Round 18, and no one else. Artie did okay with the waiver wire and picked up a few saves here and there (Jason Frasor to name one). In the end, he finished middle of the overall pack in saves, but did well enough in other categories to win the whole thing.

Bottom line is that he didn't "punt" the category, but rather looked for value saves after draft day. It can work, but as I said earlier, a whole lot of stuff has to go right for you.

In 2007 JE we were able to win our league with drafting one reliever only and early (Mariano) tried to grab some mr pitchers with possible closer potential later to get lucky.Unfotunately didn't.

Had to work hard on the waiver wire was able to get hennessy and accardo but dropped accardo a week too early. We had to sweat out the championship til the last week.

Personally you can win a league with minimizing saves(you can't completely punt the category imo ) If you draft very well will you win your league maybe will you win the main event...no !!!

my advice on punting...NEVER go into a draft with that theory...you'll miss out on bargains.

rubberneck You only punt when you are forced to. Going into a draft with this strategy is not a good idea. If you have some bad luck with injuries and ineffectiveness then you may be forced to try this.

However, the position is soooo volatile and there will be new closers available on the wires. Don't give away points.
