Can this Offense compete?

Post by GOD Loves You » Tue Mar 04, 2008 3:00 am

You guys know I love your opinions....

Was wondering the thoughts on this offense...can it compete in the NFBC?

C Towles

C Ruiz

1B LaRoche

2B Weeks

3B Kouzmanoff

SS Peralta

MI Uggla

CI Reynolds

OF Pence

OF Cust

OF DeJesus

OF R.Davis

OF Fields

U/Bench

Headley

A.Ramirez(White Sox)

Nix

Frandsen

Murton

Denorfia

S.Duncan

Dukes

Obviously I'm going to see more potential in a lot of these players than others, but overall...does it have the capability if competing?

Appreciate any opinions, especially the bashers!

My cursory review leads to to say that you will finish last in BA, and runs & steals will be tough to get, too.

Seeing this offense in the light of day, I'd swear you drafted with babypoop on your hands.

Sorry but an awful offense all the way around. I cant say there is one category that you will be very good in. I assume you loaded up on pitching since it appears that Pencce would have been your first offensive player selected.

with 5 great starters on your bench i think it will be tough to juggle the lineup to get all the good players in- but i have seen you do it. 61 pitching points, 45-50 hitting before you get started. another league winning team.

Depends on what you mean by compete, my friend. :D

In my opinion, this offense will not get you close to the 55-60 point range. Rather, I see some real struggles in BA, HR, and RBI. The best offensive line for any one category is middle of the pack. If you crack 35 total offensive points (I think it will be closer to 30) I would be surprised.

Good luck. Your pitching staff must be the equivalent of Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Doc Gooden, and Greg Maddux (early version). ;)
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

DeJesus, Nix, Frandsen, and Murton were not good picks in my opinion. Better counting category players probably could have been had over those guys.

That being said, if you draft in the Main, like in these satelites, I would want you sitting right next to me.

This was an auction, that's why there's some "weird" players on my team.

Now if I add in my pitching staff....tell me what you think?

Johan

Peavy

Bedard

Haren

Shields

Bell

Neshek

Kobayashi

Fukumori

The offense will be compete in all categories...eventually. I agree, I will have to work on the batting average..but...I don't care about it!

Dan, I attack the individual leagues different than I will the main, but I guarantee people will think I'm nuts with how I draft for the main as well...so what can I do?? other than keep being me and keep winning leagues.

The players you mentioned were all $1 players at the very end of the draft.

I got stuck with a couple players I didn't want...and I hate that +$1 bid button....you click it at the same time a person doubles the previous bid and your screwed. Live auctions are much better.

Keep the criticism coming, it's fun to look back on it at the end of the season.

When you win this league with a 1 in saves and 1 or 2 in SB's, ill be the first to come on these boards to congratulate you and say you were right on.

Dough, two teams went reliever strategy. One of them put together a very nice offense and is one of four teams I see that stand out as favorites.

If GLU can cash a penny in this league I'll be very impressed, he says he's done it before with strange-looking drafts, so either I will be watching and learning, or laughing.

since i need to learn on auctions- if you saw this aren't 12-14 pitching points available in k's and maybe wins and whip at a fairly low price by going the other way? something like 6 decent starters and broxton, betencourt and wheeler? thanks

All it means is you're competing with 12 of the 15 teams for era, whip, k's and w's, you can lower your targets slightly for those categories so you don't want to overpay chasing top starting pitching. But the margin between those 12 teams in the middle could be tighter too, so staff management could have more strategic value.

considering you assembled a superstar pitching staff, your offense actually isn't too bad...besides pence, i think the kouz, reynolds, uggla, & fields provide ample power if not ave, hopefully laroche doesn't hit like he did in the 1st half last yr, and weeks breaks out, you could be a contender.

not a fan of the utility/bench though

why no closers?
Always be closing.

Even if you project a few of your sketchy players for 500 AB's you're BA is still going to come in around .270 and you're going to be short in HR, R, RBI, and SB. The only good thing about your offense, as far as I can see, is that you're team looks to be behind about an equal amount in every category. Under par balance. Interesting technique. I see that you do have some good upside with players, but you're also guaranteed to have crap BA's with more than three of those guys, which limits their upside in the counting cats.

On the pitching side...rockitsauce brings up a great point...why no closers? If you're going to dominate pitching why not DOMINATE pitching? You're primed to lead in 4/5 categories. Maybe you could have skipped Haren and Shields and grapped a couple closers? Then ditch Fukumori and The Hot Dog Eater and fill in with some potential breakout starters.

Overall, I'd say that team would finish with about 55% of the total points in the Main Event.
"This guy here is dead."

Since GLU went for it, here is fodder for the peanut gallery:

It was an extremely competitive draft. I think KJ Duke and I just couldn't give each other a break. Very hard to get a deal/steal. My one steal I like is $2 for Marcum. The Eckstein bid was a software induced mistake.

The cost of the power/speed guys was incredible. I did make one mistake and didn't hit the draft button on time for a bid on Brandon Phillips as well. Obviously speed is a giant issue... Out of all my auction drafts in the NFBC over the last 3 years, I like this team the least...

Your team is slightly behind, in the next tier of three. I think you did a good job getting some of the better values, but overpaid for your SS which left you with bad options at C-2, 3B, OF-5, and of course the 1 closer. Very fixable with some decent pickups though.

Singling out a bad team would be offensive, but I don't think mentioning four teams you like is offensive at all.

I didn't even notice that two teams were going all relief during the draft. My clue should been when I tried to handcuff Rauch to Cordero for a dollar and somebody bid $4 for Rauch. I was scratching my head there. Also, SPs were slightly more plentiful then I expected.

I'm an auction newbie so I was just looking to be competitive. The reason I asked is that I'm having a hard time singling out an especially good team or teams. For example, I think you have very nice balance, being an experience player, but I don't know if you excel in any one category.
