It is easy to be an armchair quarterback and say that was the worst trade in history now. But back then the Twins gave up an all-star catcher who was well liked by the Minnesota fans for Nathan who was an unknown middle relief guy who had really done nothing, Bonser who had failed as a SP and Liriano an A ball pitcher who was injured and sat out the entire previous season. Most of us Twins fans thought we got taken to the cleaners when that deal was announced and even most of the press ripped the Twins for the deal. Now that a few years have passed, it is a whole different story so it just goes to show that no baseball trade should be judged on the immediate results.

valid point plymouth, hindsight is indeed 20/20 or sumthin' like that, but i still want answers for why in the hell ryan sandberg was traded for ivan dejesus!!! i guess if dallas green was still runnin' the team i can forgive him since he did bring us a world series title!

OK after the fact , its still the worst trade in baseball history.And it will only get worse if Soraino is the next Santana and Boonser can improve.Nathan has just been the best closer in baseball since that trade.

How about Heathcliff Slocomb [spelled wrong] for Jason Varitek and Derek LOWE,that won us a world seris.

That is what makes trades so interesting, it is all about the gamble. Some of my best fantasy trades were the ones that did not go through. It is all about the ego's and who can better who. What would we fans talk about if MLB owners and GM's were not so stupid so much of the time.

Eddie, I like your "worst trade ever" post with Nathan, Bonser and Liriano for Pierzynski. This was a classic. But the worst ripoff in the history of all sports has to be the Pirate's giveaway of Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill. A perennial all-star for a guy that never played! Of course this is just one of many deals like this by the Pirates.

I think the trade happened on a Friday. Saturday morning my nfbc partner at the time and I saw him at the mall. My partner overheard him b!tching about how bad the deal was on his cell phone walking around.

Fast forward to spring training 06 people are killing Steve Phillips from the stands about the deal- he looks up and says you think that is the first time anyone has said that. I hear about that trade almost every day.

There was a negative effect for the Rays on this trade, though. In future trade talks, management thought that is how all trades would work and the Rays probably missed out on some solid trade opportunities. I think the new management now realizes that their predecessors pulled off a heist, that may not be able to be duplicated.

Stupid Victor Zambrano.

It still hurts every time I watch Kazmir pitch. Worst part is the Mets paid him so much $$ to sign and then cut bait. Steve Phillips and Jim Duquette need to get knuckle sandwiches every 10 minutes till they pass out and then every 5 minutes there after.

At least Littlefield and the Pirates were crazy enough to deal us Oli Perez for X-man Nady. Some small measure of redemption for the Mets there.
