In an attempt to fuel the argument over the best draft slot, I offer the following for your reflection. The key is money won. So what slot was worth the most money? I am counting only league awards here. The several ties were accounted for. Here is the breakdown.
Slot 8 - $29,000
Slot 3 - $17,250
Slot 12 - $17,250
Slot 7 - $14,250
Slot 5 - $9,625
Slot 6 - $9,000
Slot 1 - $8,500
Slot 9 - $7,500
Slot 11 - $6,750
Slot 2 - $6,125
Slot 14 - $5,750
Slot 15 - $5,750
Slot 10 - $5,000
Slot 4 - $4,250
Slot 13 - $4,000
Many like to group by 5’s to equate to front, middle and end. Here is that breakdown:
Slots 6-10 - $64,750
Slots 1-5 - $45,750
Slots 11-15 - $39,500
Overall money slots were
1st – slot 8
2nd – slot 8
3rd – slot 13
4th – slot 4
5th – slot 7
6th – slot 2
7th – slot 3
8th – slot 11
Interesting that the two lowest paying league slots actually were 3rd and 4th overall.
Finally, league championships by slot are:
Slot 8 - 4.33
Slot 3 - 3
Slot 12 - 2
Slot 7 - 2
Slot 9 - 1.33
Slot 1 - 1
Slot 2 - 1
Slot 6 - 1
Slot 10 - 1
Slot 11 - 1
Slot 14 -1
Slot 15 - 1
Slot 5 - 0.33
Slot 4 - 0
Slot 13 - 0

Viper, This is very interesting, but it is too small a sample. Do you have access to last year's data also? Combining both year's data would make a better case.

League Money won by draft slot
Sorry, but I guess only Greg has all that info. I do still have the draft picks from 2004 but not each league's finish. However, I did have the following in a CREATiVESPORTS article I wrote last October. At least it has the league champions draft slots.
The draft positions of the league champions were:
#3 – 4 times
#12 – 2 times
#1 – 1 time
#4 – 1 time
#5 – 1 time
#6 – 1 time
#7 – 1 time
#9 – 1 time
#10 – 1 time
It does seem that drafting in the middle and towards the front of the middle had more success. The overall winner and runner-up both drafted #3 in their respective leagues.
Todd Helton was the #1 pick on three championship rosters. Carlos Beltran was the #1 pick on two championship rosters. Of course, those were the #1 and #2 teams overall. No other players was the #1 players on multiple teams. Mark Prior was the #1 pick for one league champion. I am impressed. That team even ended up #6 overall.
Carlos Zambrano was the biggest name player on multiple winning rosters. Four teams had him. Luke Hudson was on six championship rosters to lead the pack by himself.
There was a team whose owner missed the draft. The league organizers had someone draft that team but no roster moves or free agent acquisitions were made for the entire season. This was truly a dead team. It also ended up 55th overall and missed a third place league finish by ½ point.

Well, we now have two years of data that prove it doesn't matter where you pick in a 16-team league.
How many more years will it take for all to be convinced?
Nice job on all the breakdowns. It's always fun to look at this.

Nice job on all the breakdowns. It's always fun to look at this. Maybe not each indivudal slot, but there may be some truth in the middle group of 6-10 be the most advantagous. It would be interesting to see what last year looked like.
