Seems to me that Crawford had knee issues all year which limited his speed game, and possibly even his power. I think Tampa has artificial surface, which could prove a problem if the knees are a chronic type condition. His numbers before the season ending injury were more appropriate to a 4th round pick then a 1-2nd rounder.

boggs homers= 5,5,6,8,8,24,5,3,6,8,7,2,11,5,2,4,7,2. bjoak- why do feel that 24 homer season was a fluke? i think what shawn is looking at is both crawford and boggs hit 8 homers in their 27/28 season then boggs hit 24 in his 28/29 year old season. happens every time.

Boggs was a marvel. It seemed he could foul off any pitch at will.
If I remember right, the RedSox needed more power in the lineup and asked Boggs to lengthen his swing that year. I'm sure one of the RedSox followers would know the whole story. Stevie, CC?

Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

On Boggs: just looked at his career numbers. If you assume that his prime had a typical line of : .320's 7-9 HR 65ish rbis, 105 runs, 1-3 sbs. Kind of looks Placido Polanco ish. If you look at his BEST years, obviously, a 350s BA constitutes a blow away in a category and his best year, as mentioned, would make him worth a 1st or second rounder.

This remind me of Joe Mauer, but Mauer has driven a few more runs.

Maybe he was on steriods for one year or the ball was juiced. Wasn't there a jump in homeurns accross the board in 1987?

There was a lot of talk of a juiced ball in 87(now we know it was likely the beginning of juiced players) and looking back there were a lot of guys who had career years HR-wise that year.
My personal favs from that season:
CLE Cory Snyder 33 and Brook Jacoby 32 -neither ever sniffed 30 again.
George Bell -The AL MVP's 47 dingers trailed only McGwire-never hit more than 25 in 6 more seasons.
Wally Joyner - 34 - In his sophmore season he topped 30 HR's for the only time - in fact he hit more than 20 only once over the next 14 years.
Juan Samuel - 28 - in his age 26 season he topped 20 hr's for the only time and went on to never hit more than 12 in a season.
Jack Clark - 35 - Jack hit more than 20 HR's 12 times in his 18 year career, but 87 was the only time he topped 30.
Matt Nokes - 32 - The rookie burst on the scene but even a trade to the Yankees could help him hit 30 HR's ever again.
Mike Pagliarulo - 32 - Pags had his best power season and never came close again.
Not only was it the only season that Dawson hit over 40 HR's - Dale Murphy also hit 44 - the only time in his career that he topped 40.
Larry Sheets hit 31 for Balt - he fell back to earth the following year.
Dwight Evans - I always liked D Evans - but you can't ignore that 87 was a career year for Evans as his 34 123 .305 stat line were all career highs at age 35!!
Darrell Evans hit 34 at age 40.
Alan Trammel had his career year of 28 105 .343.
There are more for sure - a funy year 87.
