Don't be too green on Smoltz. I kind of wish he had retired. I think his #1 upside left some time ago and I am confused as to why he wants to hang on when return to form is not probable. At his age and the shape his arm is in (i.e. they found a lot of "general wear and tear" in his shoulder), you will not (ok, should not) see Smoltz get out of the sixth too many times. Anything over 15 starts will be a plus. It is a shame when Hall of Famers try to play out the string one or two too many years.

Ed, I have to disagree with you. THough I can not predict how good Smoltz will be in 09, he was filthy good in 07...I saw him pitch and he was throwing mid 90s. He was doing that with "much wear and tear" I dont think even his orthopod can predict his success in 09, but I think its a good gamble by Sox.

Five million if it doesen't work, 10 million and a probable pennant if it does.

In my heart, I wanted to see Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz all go into the Hall together. If any of the three has any gas left it would be Smoltz.

I can't buy into your argument, Wayne, about Hall of Famers playing out the string in regards to Smoltz. The man has never failed. His body has failed him, but he has been nothing short of dominant when pitching.

Mickey Mantle said, "Damn, to think you're a .300 hitter and end up at .237 your last season, then find yourself looking at .298 lifetime batting average- It made me want to cry."

Smoltz hasn't had anything like that happen to him. Right now, it is just his body telling him to retire , when the hitters tell him, he'll get out.

By the way, what 41 year old pitcher would NOT have "general wear and tear" in the shoulder?

What is a darn shame is that Smoltz could not have been a "lifer" for one organization.

Damned few of those around.

And clearly Andruw Jones "should" have stayed in Atlanta. I think his problem is that he's got Gary Coleman's personality, moping around feeling sorry for himself because he didn't want to leave ATL.

I think the Smoltz signing is a great complement to the Penny deal. Penny is historically a better starter than finisher. If Penny performs at all, it will be pre-All Star game. Smoltz should be available for the 2nd half of the season and is a proven playoff stud.

For fantasy purposes- I am staying away from both.

Manager Bob Geren said yesterday that Daric Barton "might be a touch behind" during spring training after undergoing hip surgery and having his tonsils removed.

Note to self- Stay away from Daric Barton's surgeon.
