Kentucky Derby Style For 2006
I apologize for not updating this discussion since I posted the poll last month, but I waited for all of the feedback and then some last minute details with STATS before finalizing this. Now for the update:
1) The poll showed that 70% of our NFBC respondents and a higher amount of e-mails I received said they would like to use the Kentucky Derby Style system in 2006 to determine draft spots. Basically, all that means is that Tom and I will still pick each league for the main event randomly and the draft order randomly, but each owner will have some say in telling us which is their draft spot preference. We'll keep those lists and go off them when announcing the draft order for each league.
2) STATS will create an area on the NFBC game site for draft preferences. It is not completed yet and I'll have an update on how this looks and works soon. It can be done online and once you have access to the game site you can rank your preferences and change them up until our determined deadline (likely a few days before our signup deadline). We'll also have a checkbox that says "I'll take spots 1 through 15 in that order" for anyone who will take whatever spot they are given.
3) I know there is some backing for the Blind Bidding Draft System for the main event, but I said right along I didn't want to do that for 2006. I will definitely create some satellite leagues that use BBDS if anyone wants to try that. But I did receive strong feedback via e-mail and on the phone from owners who DID NOT want BBDS in the baseball main event.
4) I'll have an update on the Satellite Leagues soon, but I'll likely announce a more aggressive schedule than I had thought. Terry Haney made a good suggestion to run some satellite leagues just before Opening Day and I will add those for sure. We could also have satellite leagues in early February for those owners who want to get a jumpstart on 2006. Look for that post soon.
I am still working with STATS on the KD System, so there's a 1% chance we won't have this in 2006. But for those owners waiting to see what I was going to do, I can tell you that I feel there is enough support to add this wrinkle to the competition and we'll unveil the setup soon. It won't change the competition at all, but it may provide a little more strategy when it comes to your draft spot.
Good luck everyone.

Okay, I guess I'll be the first one to ask the obvious question: Which spot would you most prefer in 2006?
This isn't like football where everyone wants LaDainian Tomlinson, so I'd be interested in the feedback. Hmmm, I'm not even sure which spot I'd prefer!

btw, i still haven't found any "top gamers" against BBDS. those folks who didn't want it must be the "other gamers"
good luck!

good luck!
All in good time, my child, all in good time!!! As a parent you must know that patience is a virtue. Let's see how this first step goes and evaluate if it was a plus or a minus for the competition.
We all certainly know that you can't win the NFBC because of the first pick, so this is a minor move compared to what we decide to do in football. The 15th person picked in either format (KD Style or random) has no choice of his spot anyways, so this won't change anything. It's the late round pickups, free agent pickups and injuries that play a bigger role in baseball.
But it is a change from the norm and I promise to educate everyone once we have it in place.
Yeah, and then they have 29 more rounds to navigate through and 26 weeks of free agent pickups. Those owners would have likely gotten a more preferred draft spot than No. 15 anyways, but I hear your point loud and clear. My point is that in baseball, the next 29 picks are even more important than that first one.

I'll take whatever pick I can start will Carl Crawford. What do you think .320, 120 runs, 30 Hrs, 100 RBI and 40 steals? If he was smart he start taking steriods, so he get that huge pay day!!! I guess 6th pick!!

If you want to see where players might go in the first round, check out our mock draft on the mock draft portion of the NFBC message board. We still need a few people to join up. (You can have Crawford at pick 7 right now!!!)
Chance favors the prepared mind.

I got Carl at 8 last year and for about 90 percent of the season never regretted it- then 2 things happened Carl did not play the last week of the year and bjoak told me it was a bad pick. Therefore I was living a lie all year long.
A lot of Crawford's value will be determined IMO by who manages them next year, I would find it hard to believe they still will not have to run a lot. Baldelli back, D Young and Upton on the way and if Gomes and Cantu can give 90 percent of what they did last year that could be a very undervalued offense.
