Question: How much difference in production will there be between Texeira at 23 mill over 8 yrs and Giambi at 4.5 over one?
Answer:
not 18.5 million worth
If Tex projects at 295 32 110
Giambi: 245 30 85 with OBP of 400

Giambi: 245 30 85 with OBP of 400 I highly doubt Giambi pokes 30 this season. Another year older, tougher park, weaker support staff.

than you must think that he will get injured because he has consistently hit a HR between every 12 and 15 ABs over last 5 years even through tumor, steroids scandal, and various other ailments

He should really get more AB's with the dh slot open to him any given day that he doesn't play first. I would take the over on 30.
Chance favors the prepared mind.

Gotta think it is the ideal place for him to have gone - hometown cooking for the California native.
I think 30 is a reasonable target for him.

Nice obp, but all or nothing these days (19 2b .247 ba). Giambi's on the cusp of Cust.
He did what he did last season - played hurt and cranked them out to land 1 more big contract with the Yanks. It didnt work out. Sorry, I just don't see how you can pen him in for 30.

Giambi: 245 30 85 with OBP of 400 That is a very skewy way of looking at it. Teixeira was impossible to get at one year with a bright future ahead of him. He'll be playing excellant defense, while much of Giambi's production will be off the pine as a dh.If you want to look at it your way, Giambi's numbers in four years will probably be .000 0 0 with an obp of .000
While Teixeira will still be providing the same numbers if not more.
My point is, sure, the Giambi signing is a good sign for the A's. But the Yankees signing of Teixeira is just as good if not better since they know who their 1b will be for the next eight years.
Both teams are improved with those signings.

Dough makes a great point - the Tex signing is a great one for the Yanks- for the present and future- in four or 5 years the Yanks will be saying goodbye to Jeter and Arod and Tex will become the face of this franchise. There are very few players who hit free agency and offer what Tex does in terms of a reasonable expectation of long term success and production. As a baseball fan - I would have rather seen him land in Baltimore - just to make that Division that much more interesting- but the Yanks wisely looked and saw that they had no one really in the minors coming soon and gobbled Tex up.

09 projected:
Giambi / Cust
241 BA 235
373 OBP 388
27 HR 31
82 RBI 83
How much is Cust worth - a younger version of Giambi and about the same age as Teix?

You can sight numbers and all... but what if giambi goes back to not hitting at all ..ala 2006 and 2007. his 400 obp is nice but I think the yankees were getting tired of seeing 91 mile an hr fastballs getting blown by him..
Plus you have to remember Tex is a gold glove first basemen where giambi was god awful...you will not need a late game defensive replacement.
So when adding up the numbers if tex can 1 run evey 2 games with his defense you have to factor that in.
