NFBC #1 Picks
Seeing Johan Santana pitch on MLB made me smile. My first NFBC pick. Taking a pitcher in the first round was considered not good strategy, but it turned out ok for me.
Anyway, I thought I'd list my #1 picks from the Main Draft and invite others to do the same.
2005- Santana, great pick and still is. I should look back through history to see how many other pitchers were arguably the top option five years in a row.
2006- Michael Young, wtf? What was I thinking? Fooled that Young would give me positional greatness, I paired him with Chone Figgins to give me positional power up the ying yang. I chased real power all year long.
2007- Alfonzo Soriano, acceptable. Coming off his career year in Washington and signing a rich contract with the Cubs had me a little scared. But he did ok, even carrying the team at times.
2008- ARod, Hey, everybody else was doing it! RBI fall in his lap with that lineup. Funny though, as a person with vested interest in him, his failings with men on base are far more memorable to me than his successes.
2009-????, Although,.... I do hear that Michael Young may be getting 3b eligibility.

NFBC #1 Picks
Had to do some research for this one:
2004: Alex Rodriguez 1.01. First season with the Yankees. I barely knew the American Lge existed in 2004 and considered drafting all NL-players. HRs and RBI fell off, but he ran more.
286-36-28-112-106
2005: Carl Crawford 1.13. Career-best RBI total.
301-15-46-101-81
2006: Manny Ramirez 1.07. Played only 130 games, run production huge drop from previous but overall solid.
321-35-0-79-102
2007: Jimmy Rollins 1.06. League MVP and career-best season. He was mainly a 2nd rounder this season, I took him earlier than anyone and he leads the Zefurs to their first main event title.
296-30-41-139-94
2008: Miguel Cabrera 1.03. After a slow start for Miggy, bjoak chides me for this pick in the 1st round (and CC Sabathia in the 4th). These two picks turn out ok, but Tulo and Weeks (2nd and 5th) crash my season.
292-37-1-85-127
2009: I see a trend for the first time - if I pick NL #1 its a bull market for the Zefurs, AL and its a bear market. Hmmm, which way will I go this season?

NFBC #1 Picks
2005...
Picked Scott Rolen I believe toward the end of the first round. My first year in NFBC was an eye opener (and each year since it seems)
I knew myself, and knew I liked to take risks...so I went what I felt was very conservative taking a proven tough and consistent player coming off a .314 34 HR 124 RBI 109 R in only 142 games!
What happens? He gives me .235 5 HR in 56 games. He goes from career year to career worst year...just for little old be!
Chest Rockwell beats out Welcome to Stevieland for our league title.
2006...said "screw the NFBC main...those guys are too damn good"
I played in the 2006 SCL vs. some of the best of the best and took either Lance Berkman or Carlos Lee toward the end of the first (can't recall nor look up)...I came in second place to DOUGHBOYS and won a 2007 NFBC Main entry...my confidence was a little better. (sucker)
2007...I believe I took Ryan Howard (another player coming off what turned out to be their career year...but Howard was young at least) toward the middle of the first round after his monster 2006. He hit the DL, and his average dropped a ton...but he still delivered the goods.
Once again...Mr. DOUGHBOYS takes down our league in the main.
2008...I thought I was finally ready to tango with the best of the NFBC...and had just the league to prove it. I was thrilled to draft Jimmy Rollins (yet ANOTHER player coming off what turned out to be their career year...either I'm a curse or a sucker or both)...Rollins gets hurt, and his HR, RBI and Run stats are like half as good as the year prior.
Kelly Uganski's LONG GONE holds off a surging Eddie Gillis to take down our league.
My career record in the NFBC main is pathetically consistently pathetic...yet I've managed to beat some very successful or big named players over the three years...proving there is plenty of "luck" in baseball IMO.

292-37-1-85-127Cabrera turned out better than I expected but a Teixeira type season does not give back the value you want in that slot. You had a first rounder who put up decent numbers and in the end I guess no one can complain about that. I don't remember ever saying a word about Sabathia (comments about the correct way to wear a ballcap notwithstanding). I owned him in '07.
I guess because two of my first five picks have spoiled every year in this contest I just don't see that as a reason for a lost season. It's a team effort.

2005 Sheets-ouch
2006 Bay-ouch
2007 Howard-meh
2008 Wright-not quite what I projected but the best of the bunch.
I would love to have that guy who carries my team around on his back. Actually I had Howard in '06 as a 3rd round pick and he was that guy. What a spectacular feeling to see someone get it done almost every day like that.

It's most likely due to you (Eddie) being in too many leagues to recall which one was the ME...but for me...being in like 3 or 4 or 5 per league...makes me put the blame on Tequila.
Maybe it's just harder than I thought to recall 2007...

2008 Pick 13 Ryan Howard Did exactly what we expected, maybe a .270 average was more what we expected, but he did what we thought would. Too bad he started so slow as I was a big contributor to Tom's, "I hate Ryan Howard' thread. Getting us a 2nd place finish in our rookie year I can say he wasn't a bad choice.

Ryan Howard is who we thought he was.But agree if he could get that avg up to 270 he would be solid.

In 2004, I took Tejada out of the 9/10 spot if memory serves. Paid off as SS was thin that year and the steroid induced 150 RBI, 34 HR, 107 R, .311 BA was sweet.
In 2005, took a 3rd baseman as I thought THAT position was too thin, so I locked in (late 1st round pick) on a solid 30-35 HR, 100+ RBI, .280-.300 BA player. Shoulder-smoulder...no problem. Mr. Consistency, yes? No, I get Mrs. Scott Rolen. DOOOOH!
2006 I had the number three pick and went with Teixiera. He was good, but he wasn't #3 good. Fell off on his BA and HR numbers from the previous year.
2007 I picked Miguel Cabrera (I think I was picking in the middle of the pack). Gave me exactly what I was expecting and you cannot ask more than that.
Last year from the middle of the first round I picked Utley over Cabrera. Ended up both would have been good picks, but with Utleys SB and more runs scored, though with fewer HR and RBI (BA was the same), I ended up with prime production out of 2B. No complaints.
In short, I have been pretty fortunate with my 1st rounders, Rolen notwithstanding.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

2005 Carl Crawford at pick 8. Wanted Bob Abreu badly, but this cat in seat 5 named Andy Nolan stoled him. First time Andy and I ever speak is me growling at him at the first break. We have been friends since.
2006- Absolutely hated having pick 15 and reached for a guy going in the 2nd round named Chase Utley. I was a genius for about 12 minutes until I reached and took Rich Harden at the next turn.
2007- Used whatever mind tricks I could to get Bill Strickler to take Ryan Howard so I could reunite with Crawford. It did not work. Howard ended up putting up respectable numbers, but never really seemed to do much in an individual box score.
2008- At pick pick 5 took Jimmy Rollins because I liked his durability better than Jose Reyes. That was one of many reasons I finished middle of the pack.
2009- I think there are 13 legitimate first round picks and I have pick 14 in my first draft. I can only hope one of them slips....

NFBC #1 Picks
2004- (5) Todd Helton .347 32/96/115/3
Solid, good start
2005- (5) Bobby Abreu .301/30/105/118/40
We were on our way to greatness, and then the homerun derby. Still very solid, got a grunt out of the twosome in the #8 seat. For any newbie, grunts are good, even in Round 1
2006- (12) Johan Santana 2.77/19/245/1.00
Followed up with Rollins, Howard and K-rod and we were well on our way
2007- (13) Matt Holliday .340/36/137/120/11
Got a grunt out of Alabama Ken in the #14 seat, what a base Holliday started us off with
2008- (12) Johan Santana 2.53/16/206/1.15
Decent, maybe not 1st round material, but the Carlos Guillen, Chone Figgins, Paul Konerko trifecta in 3,4,6 hurt more
2009- We'll see, right now just mulling over KDS and different starting off combos...
