MIDDLE RELIEF RANKINGS?
This is a baseball forum? I am afraid to change the subject.DOOM AND GLOOM the end is near!!!!!!!MY 401k is down 37% thats all i know and i have no choice but to ride it out on a lighter note.I always wondered why relief pitchers (non-closers)never got seperate rankings? I have always been in head-head leagues therefore they were of no value. Do they have value? I would appreciate everyones opinion. Me being the wise one always said if i had the chance I would put it to the test? After taking 3 front line starters and 2 closers I grabbed BALFOUR,DOTEL,SHIELDS,AND AFFELDT. TO me 400 I.N. of 2.50 ERA and 400 K looks good 700 I.N. minimum in most lgs this isnt a revalation? just a strategy whe will see what happens? Anyone ever try this? I am curious all feedback welcome THANX
MIDDLE RELIEF RANKINGS?
From someone who is new to baseball (and has never seen anyone try this), I would bet it MIGHT be OK in a satellite (competing against only 14 others).
However, in the Main Event (where you are competing against almost 400 others), your Wins, K's, and possibly saves (depending on who you got) would get absolutely annihilated.
3 quality starters x 15 wins each (which in itself is a stretch) = 45 wins. You need about 90 to be in the top 20%.
I don't know much, but I know one horrible category (and you would have TWO) will all but kill your chances of being competitive in the Main Event.
Might be interesting to try in a satellite though!

I am curious all feedback welcome THANX It has been my experience in the main that because turnover in closers is so high, many (I may even say most) will pick up or at least closely monitor the set-up guys/closers in waiting from the bull pen. A lot of folks do the six SP, two CL, and one MR formula.
After the five starters and one closer on each MLB team, assuming 11 total pitchers on a roster, you are looking at about 150 MR out there. Only about 10% are ever drafted would be my guess. Cannot rely too much on MR, while WHIP and ERA would be great, the loss of K's in a 5x5 would be too much to add to the loss in Wins. For example, in 2008 120 pichers pitched at least 120 IP. They were all pretty much full time starters. They averaged 11.5 W and 132 K's. Between 120 and 50 IP, there were 198 pitchers. They averaged less than 4 W and less than 59 K's each. That is a lot of ground to make up.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I am curious all feedback welcome THANX By the way, the three SP (say 500 K's), two closers (about 150 K's) and 400 K from your relievers would get you about 1,050 K total, maybe a little less. In 2008, that would have put you about 346th place out of 390th for K's in the Main, and one to two points out of you individual league.
Not jamming the theory, but it means you have to be bang on with all your other categories including Wins, which is tough.

You're getting sound advice PP. Don't try it in the Main Event and while shorting categories in Sats. is a gimmick that sometimes works, I don't like it very much. Mainly, something unexpected always goes wrong due to injury or off years with the players that you're counting on. Lose another category to the fickleness of fate and you're pretty much toast. It also limits your strategic options in the end game when you're desperately trying to gain that extra point or two. The top players using a balanced approach will beat that strategy more often than not. I believe you're new to the NFBC (correct me if I'm wrong) so I'll give you this advice, learn a strategy to play in the Main and it will also work in the Sats. The reverse is not consistently true. Just my opinion.

Im gonna hijack this thread and turn it into what I thought it was based on the title: What are your MR rankings. Not 'scheduled' Closers, but you can certanly figure the potential for Saves into your decision. Lets hear the top 5.
