I guess I should be thankful to grab a second catcher in the 18th round who could go .275/20/75/5/60

Still, it's tough to actually write it out without my brain screaming "No! No! Don't do it!!!":

18-4: Miguel Olivo

(Of course he's just as likely to go .240/8/40/2/40, which would serve me right for not waiting until after Round 20 to pick my second catcher, especially when I still have only 3 starters).

I think your alter ego has this one correct- I have done what you are doing here before and regretted it every time. If I do not see specific value, need, upside in a 2nd catcher before round 13-14 I am waiting until the end.

RT raw, that's your fourth CI and you've already got F Thomas locked in as your DH ... if we're trying to fill the 23 starting roster slots you need a C, MI, 2 OF and 2 pitchers.

agree- except your brain can always percieve value need or upside if it wants to.

Are we expecting Raw Talent to change that Betemit pick?

I would say he should change it when he checks back, but no use holding up the draft in the meantime.

18-10 Clif Floyd / decent gamble here, if he starts and stays healthy for 100 gms he'll be a bargain

In 15 seasons he's had over 400 AB's (equaling approx 100 games) exactly four times, which happens to be the same number of seasons in which he had less than 150 AB's. He's got a chronic problem with his legs and feet (especially that cursed Achilles). He can still play a decent left field when he's healthy, but that never seems to be the case.

I can see him signing with an AL team and splitting time between LF and DH (Baltimore would be a good fit, since the O's inexplicably think they can compete this year and are signing veterans to big contracts). And if he gives you 20 dingers and 75 RBI in 350 AB's I suppose that's not bad for an 18th rounder. But there are still a number of OFers available that are younger and healthier, and I personally would have gone for one of them.

ok- i am going home- but i am sure you guys have been reading the "rumors". lets say dodgers get manny -they would play manny, pierre, probably either (really a left fielder) and betemit, furcal, kent, garciaparra and martin. the cubs are talking about trading jones, signing floyd (and if they didn't get lofton- playing floyd in right, sorianna in center, murton in left). ramirez, izturis, derosa, lee and barrett. that would give the 2 teams exactly 3 guys that can actually play defense at their positions- furcal, izturis, d lee ( maybe martin- never saw him). hope it happens- those could be the 2 worst defenses in the history of baseball- or at least since the whitesox "hitmen" of the 70's.

[/QUOTE]BEF - valid points, but as a DH he might just stay healthy for awhile, or as a Cub, I think he'd be productive.

The reason I take him over a younger player is that when healthy he is likely to play full-time and his producitivity per AB in 4 categories has always been good. I don't think he could be less healthy than last yr and still play, so when he plays he should produce more ... as a 5th OF I like him because I won't need him all the time.

Now I see HH just took Hermida - I would've rather had him, he slipped by me  ... there were 5-6 OF's I was looking at here, any of which I could've went for. No one jumped out.

Hermida was one of the three guys I was thinking of that were still available and are younger and (mostly) healthier and thus should be able to accumulate 400+ AB's next year. Nice pick-up, HH.

Sorry about the Betemit pick...

Let's go with another 40 year-old MI Craig Biggio at 18-5...He's slides right in there with senior citizens Jeff Kent and Frank Thomas on my team...

I am liking every pick of this round. I think the potential and talent in this round is better than the 17th IMHO.

Floyd carries alot of risk. I see what everyone who dislikes this pick means and KJ makes some very good points and I can understand why you did it. Old(er) and injury prone has some risks and I certainly took much the same risk in a MUCH earlier round with Chipper. I am rethinking whether or not that was such a good move.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

18:11 Mark Buerhle- banking on the 2nd half was masking an injury or a mechanics issue that can be fixed.
