2009 Mock Draft #1

Still gotta believe he is #1 and go with Alex Rodriguez...Greg you are up OK. I am awake now so I wanted to give Greg a little bit of why I think Reyes is a number one.
He is just completing his fourth year as a starter, so we have a good track record. He will turn 26 next year, which doesn't mean I still view him as a "growth" player (I think we have seen all he has to give), but he still has several years to take advantage of his primary attribute, speed. And this year, with 56 SB, is a bit of a down year for him. If that truly is his downside, then he brings more than solid value. Certainly 70 SB (80?) is not outside the realm of possibility.
The last three years he has posted BA's anywhere from .280 to .300. Not enough to carry your team, but it does put him on the plus side of the ledger.
Batting leadoff with the likes of other first rounders like Wright and Beltran (OK, maybe top of second) hitting behind you means runs scored by the bunch.
Very few players besides a healthy Carl Crawford will give you this kind of production and still not dig you a deep hole for HR and RBI. I can find power easier later. Reyes is no Judy.
I agree with Headhunters that Arod is easily (probably) a first pick. Age is creeping into my calculations as he will turn 34 next year. While Jeter, Abreu, Damon, or Matsui are not the over the hill gang yet, they also are not spring chickens. And how bout that starting rotation (Petite, Moose, Pavano, Ponson)! The Yanks have a lot to look at this off season so I am unsure of Arods supporting cast. I said much the same things about Pujols last year, and look how right I was, but I want the first round to be as solid as I can make it.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

I feel that there is a top tier of four, and would not be surprised if four different players go number 1 in the Main in 2009 with no one getting 50% of the top spot. Seems that we have had a consensus #1 every year and don't think 2009 will be that way.
