I agree, I was taking VMart if you did not, he will play everyday, whether behind the plate at 1B or DH, they will find a spot for his bat and he was coming around towards the end, there was definitely something wrong early in the season before he went on the DL that zapped his power. McCann has proven he will provide solid numbers but the upside of VMart in that lineup is easily 300-100-35-120, no other catcher can put up those numbers, maybe Soto with a couple more years of seasoning

Heck, I thought about taking him at 5-3 to gamble that the old VMart will return in 2009, possibly at first base. The early power loss was just too much of a concern for me, but I think it's very possible that the person who gambles on VMart will win that bet by season's end. And this early in the drafting process, why not take that gamble?

I'd love to hear other owner's thoughts on VMart. Would you take him ahead of Soto?? Would you stay away from him?? Will he catch in Cleveland or play first base?? Who gets traded from Cleveland to fit Shoppach and Garko and Hafner and Martinez in fulltime jobs??? Should be fun.

my 2 cents, cleveland: i keep hearing how great that gm is. 1st off- if sabathia pitches the same if he stays- they might have won a.l central. second- to me hafner should be the most at risk. assuming no trade- they probably rotate the 4 and the loser hits the bench. my bet would be hafner. like all years there will be many buy low candidates. some will be andrew jones and some will be bay and damon. i doubt robert planned on taking damon- but his fall was ridiculous in that league and he helped him to the title. some players go all youth, some like all vets. some will take either. i am in last camp. i just hope i can have more hits than misses. i doubt i take a catcher in 1st 4 rounds this year- but round 5 i would take one of top ones for sure. as for chicago- i think in every league 2-3 guys fall. in childs vegas league- mcclouth went in 21st round. 15th in my chicago league.

v mart and catchers. if vmart has lost his power he could still hit .290 12 95 90. i would think that is a round 8-9 hitter. For a catcher- for me that is round 5. interesting the top 3 teams, 1 took "catcher late" and waiver wired. 1 took " 2 studs" and 1 took 1 of each. so no " catcher plan" works best. gotta make good picks and gotta work the waiver wire.

I didn't/wouldn't touch Vmart this season and especially next. McCann was always higher on my list. I think Hafner and Martinez have been hanging out with the Shaun Alexanders of the world. ;)

Shoppach is their catcher next season and I would imagine Garko plays 1B. Speaking of Garko, how about those 90 RBI's.....could they have been any more quiet?

How about Huff in the 5th? Can he do it back to back?

5.15 Joe Nathan

With my next pick, I'm torn between 2 young, potential studs....a C(be quiet headhunters!) and a SP. Ok, I'll take a chance on another young pup.

I certainly understand those who look at V-Mart as a prior lock on the third round, who ain't exactly old, and will have the entire offseason to get over the elbow surgery, if there were any lingering effects. Martinez will give you good BA and solid to plus production at R and RBI, depending on where Cleveland hits him. He has given more than 20 HR a couple of times, but it is a mistake to expect more than 15, now or then.

The best thing going for Martinez getting keeping a full time gig is Shoppach. He hit very well this year, but is already 28, so I do not expect to see any new skills. It has never been a question of power. He will yank it a long way, which is good given his home park. But he ain't no Howard and that contact rate will haunt him. At best, I see Shoppach in the dreaded "platoon" with V-mart. And the platoon will quickly become a back-up with slightly more AB than the run of the mill #2 because his BA could easily be .230.

Given the BA, R, RBI, and health (i.e. hopefully a few months of post-surgery recovery) will put Martinez back in the top five. He will probably go round 5 or 6. If he gets hot in spring training, he is the fourth catcher taken. If not, generally fifth behind Soto.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

In Sept 2008 V-Mart played in 16 games, starting 15 and scored 12 runs while knocking in 14 on 2 homeruns. His Batting average of Balls in Play was .294, slightly below his career numbers. It is a small sample size but pro-rated over 140 games those runs and RBI are over 100 apiece. (82 runs and 114 RBI are career highs) He has never been a big homerun hitter (25 career high) so expectations of high teens (2 in Sept/16 game * 140 = 17.5) could be a realistic 2009 projection. Last season .278 was a career low, following three years of hitting over .300. He is getting older (30) and very well be moved out from behind the plate. If he isn’t forced to catch full time, his AB’s should increase and we could very well see career highs (Only 1 steal would tie a career high) other then BA, as his 2006 mark of .316 was outlier in BABip of .341 vs .313 (career). Still a .300 average doesn’t feel like a reach for a .298 career hitter. He should finish in top 5 among catchers in BA, Runs, and RBI (Maybe HR’s, too). To me, a tough call between Martinez and Soto, as number 4 fantasy catcher.

2009 Mock Draft #1

Post by Asumijet » Mon Oct 06, 2008 6:20 am

Between 2004 and 2007, Martinez was the #1 catcher, hands down. His four year average was .302/ 21HR /99RBI 78 Runs/ 0 SB. This year, the top 9 catchers averaged .293/ 17 HR/ 73 RBI/ 68 Runs/ 4 SB. I think Martinez' 4-year average is his upside next year; with his expected performance to be near the average of the Top 9 catchers from last year. Of course, the downside is a repeat of 2008. And here is the thing, over the last two years in the NFBC, 8 catchers were taken in the first 7 rounds- Martinez, Mauer and McCann (2x each) and Martin, Posada (each once). Of those 8 performances, two were a complete bust (Martinez and Posada 2008) and one was a significant loss (Mauer 2007); all due to injury. With about a 25% chance of getting nothing out of Martinez and the upside limited to production I can get out of a Melvin Mora or Raul Ibanez in later rounds, I either want to avoid the catcher in the early rounds or go with a 24-27 year old catcher that has upside beyond what they have already produced. Don't get me wrong, I would take Martinez, but not until round 7-ish.

He was doubted all year - his consistency says the doubters were wrong, but looks like no one expects anything near a repeat even with a much lower Win total ...

I took Victor Martinez at the beginning of the third round. Only, George Bush, The House, and stock market had a worse year than me.

Taking Victor Martinez in the fifth round is a speculative after his year, but he has shown in he past what he can do. It wouldn't surprise me to see Cleveland rotate VMart, Hafner, Garko, and Shoppach between C,1B,dh, and bench depending on who is hot and who is throwing against them. Heck, Hafner will probably be hurt before it all begins anyway.

Honestly, I think Kendrick is more speculative than VMart. Kendrick still hasn't demonstrated that he can stay healthy and has a lack of power when he does. VMart has a history of producing on his resume, while Kendrick's is filled with dl visits.

An omission from the mock has been Cliff Lee. Are Managers thinking collectively that he is a "one hit wonder"?

(Never mind, Kevin selected Lee as I was typing.)

i agree with assumi on the bust factor. However; in my league the bust factor was 20% round 1, 25% round 2, 45% round 3, 25% round 4. the big isuue- and risk- is that the catcher replacement is harder to find. but, i can't argue with what assumi said and it is a big factor.

(Never mind, Kevin selected Lee as I was typing.) I was torn between E. Santana and Lee. But went with Santana because of the Ks. But I could easily pick him before Peavy, if he is traded away from PETCO.

Doughboys, you are 100% correct, very speculative picks with 5 and 6, but upside could be pretty big if both stay healthy for the year. Just like when I drafted Bay (8th), Damon (12th), Harden (14th) and Lidge (11th) in the main, you gotta take chances and with that comes speculation.

True, and when you think about it EVERY pick is speculative. What sets VMart, Bay, Harden, Damon, and Lidge apart from Kendrick is that they have had the good track records in the past while Kendrick does not. Kendrick has not demostrated power or healthy consistency over his short career.

Although Kendrick will hit for a higher average, there is a strong chance that he will share the Rickie Weeks syndrome. Drafters of Weeks and Kendrick have the angst that although they stayed healthy and produced in the minors, they have failed to do so in a big way on the big stage.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
