I think it really depends on how much a small market team thinks it can compete when deciding whether they'll spend for a player. For example, on average, the difference in revenue for a 90 win team over an 85 win team is something like 15 million dollars. So theoretically, an 85 win team has 14 million to burn on a player who will get them an extra 5 wins, especially if they are only renting him for that one year. On the other hand, there is very little difference between a 70 and 75 win team, so it is a complete waste of money for those teams to spend on a one year player. Minnesota and Cleveland should both probably want to spend for a good rental based on that.

Florida had a heckuva time dealing Lowell when he was healthy and younger, Boston would find dealing him even more difficult.

Florida had him coming off a full season in which he hit .236 with 8 homeruns. I am sure his value is much higher now, not even accounting for inflation.

It doesen't matter, unless Boston eats most of his contract, he won't be going to a small market team.
