2011 Message Board Draft

Post by BEF » Mon Oct 18, 2010 6:57 pm

Well, you guys nailed both 30+ homer guys I had targeted right in front of me (Uggla and Dunn), so let's go with one more: Paul Konerko.

My thinking is that I've got four guys (Votto, Choo, Posey, Konerko) who should provide a collective .300 BA over 2,000 PA's, while also providing about 125 homers and 50 SB's. I think that combination of AVG/Power is very hard to find after the 5th round, at which point it'll be easier to find guys that specialize in either power or SB's but with lower BA.

Thoughts?

By the way, for you folks that want to keep updated with the Premature E-Draftulation Draft, Emory has all the 2nd round highlights on the fantasy911.com site.

I'm sure he'll provide a link when he picks.

Here is some commentary on my squad so far...

1. Utley

2. Reyes

3. Rollins

4. Ichiro

Way to go bonehead, you finally get a grasp on how to do this drafting thing and you toss it out the window.

It's not so much the risk I incurred with these picks, though that is some of it.

It is not so much that if I knew I could get Rollins in the 3rd, I would have bypassed Reyes in the second and gone with a reliable power hitter.

It is that I have completely boxed myself into a corner, and will be forced to have to target specialty type players in order to have the necessary balance to compete.

It took me 5 years to learn the best draft is not taking the "best player" at each pick. It is taking picks in such a manner to be able to take advantage of value picks later on. Some of this means having spots and the need for guys I like. Some of this is being able to take advantage of global market trends. You never want to HAVE to take a particular type of player. The reason is in a draft, there is a chance they will be taken before you pick (something that has already happened to me) or you will be forced to REACH for then, giving up some value or upside.

Specifically, I need to make up power. I am woefully short on it. So why did I take Ichiro in the 4th? I would be short regardless. And I really did not have a good feel for anyone else available. So by taking Ichiro, I have a batting average cushion which will allow me to take some low average, high power guys. But like I said, this is risky as they may be scooped before it is my turn like Dunn and Uggla just were. So in order to make up for my paucity in power, I may have to delay pitching longer than I initially intended, instead taking a hitter or two to help make up the difference. This may indeed work out okay, as I am confident in my ability to build a staff without an ace, but as mentioned, anytime a strategy like this is necessary, you are taking the chance the required parts are available at your pick. We'll see what happens.

I have my power hitting 1B – M Cabrera

I have a 20+/15+ OF – H Pence

I have my high risk/reward 2B – I Kinsler

Time for my #1 Starter:

Jon Lester. If he can improve his control even slightly, he could be a top 5 pitcher.

Premature E-Draftulation, Round Two So Round 2 of the NFBC Pay League had as follows:

1. Matt Holliday

2. Ryan Howard

3. Matt Kemp

4. Ryan Zimmerman

5. Joe Mauer

6. Victor Martinez

7. Tim Lincecum

8. Mark Teixeira

9. CC Sabathia

10. Jose Reyes

11. Prince Fielder

12. Dustin Pedroia

13. Felix Hernandez

14. Andrew McCutchen

15. Adam Wainwright

Of the 30 top picks, 26 of them are the same in both drafts and two in the NFBC MB draft went to picks 31 and 32 (Felix Hernandez and Andrew McCutchen). The other two players who didn't go in the first two rounds of the MB draft were Victor Martinez and Wainwright and both of them went in the third round. It looks like Adrian Gonzalez got the love in the second round of the MB draft but wasn't as loved in the pay draft. ;)

The top players are starting to emerge for 2011. It should be fun to see if they stay there during the upcoming off-season.
