A few questions about Chicago from someone who has never been...
What ia a toddlin' town?
Who would Cub fans want to see more in right field, Milton Bradley or Milton Berle?
Did you know that Lou Piniella is the answer to a trivia question? That question is at the end of the post.
Are the Cubs still "lovable losers" with Piniella, Bradley, and Zambrano or just losers?
What's in the Sears tower?
What is the loop?
Is there any sort of memorial to LeRoy Brown on the south side of Chicago.
Do the Bears know what to do with a real quarterback?
Where are the best pizza and hot dogs at?
Who is the only player in recorded history to be thrown out at all 4 bases in one game...

No difference. Both are best known for their zingers, the fact that they have both seen better days, and both carry around a big club.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

dogs= my vote is gold coast. i think if you ask for catsup (or ketchup), you are immediately shot. pizza- it is on this thread. loop= the train that goes in a " loop" around the city. the "loop" is the area inside that. ( i think you knew that but making sure). sears tower= law firms and " financial" firms and more law firms and then less " financial" firms. daley- like all politicians keeps raising taxes so more and more companies keep leaving. for a long time the law firms and financial firms have kept the house of cards going. i hope i live to see the day that the law firm growth stops- but i doubt it. my quote on law firms " never have so many done so little with so much" my favorite lwayer quote is by sandy oconner- " in washington, where i live; there are more lawyers than people" amen. i take solace in the few lawyers that i am good friends with. cub fans- i think they are getting dangerously close to bringing back the don buford era to chicago. don had a few battiries tossed at him in the 70's- (started wearing a helmet in the outfield) and they are ready to turn really ugly on bradley. he is truly choking and 0-5 yesterday. if he can't get it together on this trip- it will be ugly at home.

I don't understand American politics. It has become whoever has the most money wins.
We have become such a letigous society. Why not make it work for us? Joe Public, Joe the Plumber, the taxpayer, whatever political machines want to call us can hold these guys to everything they promise.
Politicians run campaigns and say anything to get elected. There is absolutely no penalty for lying to us. That has to stop. It is the classic bait and switch.
Here's my idea.
How about we hold them to their promises with contracts. Each candidate for each office signs a contract with their promises on paper. We vote on the better contract. These contracts would be like bidding on a job, just like for a building or service from an enterprise. This eliminates campaigning and the foolish waste of money circling the U.S looking for votes. If the contract says no higher taxes while in office and a tax increase is proposed, it would be immediate grounds for impeachment, etc.
I'm sure people smarter than me can poke holes in my idea, but at the least it seems like some kind of starting point for holding candidates and their parties to their word and promises.

I've also gotten the sense that much like Chipper and his missing five days at a time, Bradley is ok with missing time with an injury be it small or large.
Watching him play, I get the idea he can't wait for the game to end so that he can go enjoy what his millions have brought him.
He is like a high school baseball player who had his first sexual experience the night before. He'll still play the game, but it ain't baseball he's thinking about.

I hesitate to respond because I don’t want Chicago 4 to become more of an open forum than it already has, but I respect your writing and your willingness to express your opinions.
And yet, a contract is what we have. Whether it is two years for House members, four years for President or six years for Senators. The power is in the hands of the people to hold our reps accountable for their actions. I know that sounds overly simplistic, but it’s true. What I find disheartening is the apathy of 40% the population that does not exercise that power.

You're right, if this becomes a big topic of conversation, I' ll make a thread in the non-baseball section.
Also, you are right about having a contract. The problem with that contract is that it is an oral contract on the politician's part, which, for the most part, does not hold up in court. We, as a whole, do not trust politicians. We need to hold them to a higher standard. It's sad, but we need their promises in writing. They enjoy talking in sound bytes and have no problems with saying anything to get elected. It would be good to let us have a little say after they are elected instead of waiting 2, 4, or 6 years to rectify our mistake, because we were deceived by a promise or ideals that were subterfuge to get votes.

In case I don't respond again in this thread since we're approaching mid Aug,
It's been a fun league. Seems like just a month ago we were drafting for the main. See everyone again next year hopefully.

The rest of the field 899-1 I was just telling Gary (Middle of the 4th) a couple of days ago that I was going to add my final odds to get in the money. But I think yours look good and should stand.
As for me, this season has been extremely disappointing. It is my second year in the main event. Last season I placed fourth and I was competitive for the entire season. I was really looking forward to this year and hoping to do better. Obviously my team this year has been mediocre at best and mostly poor. I’ve made several bad decisions and most of my FAAB pickups have been busts.
So while I’m still doing the best I can this year to play spoiler, I’m looking forward to next year when we all will do this again.

Russel,
Yeah, just having fun with the odds. Always fun each year to look back on what our thoughts were in March. I already can't wait for next March.
Still hoping to finish strong this year but Bambinos have made some great pickups through FAAB in the last month. He'll be awfully tough to overtake. If the backend of our rotation pitches strong the last 1.5 months, we should be fine and in the thick of things to the end.
I usually don't even look at other teams' rosters until June-ish and it's always interesting to see how other teams drafted. As for some brief team evaluations, here's what I think of the top 4:
Bambinos- they have managed to stream pitchers at the backend of their rotation better than most nfbc managers this season. Some of the matchups have blown up on them in the past 1-2 weeks but they've been so good up to that point, that they still have over 1800 pitching pts in the overall. Like I said, they've made some great faab pickups with hitting in the last month. Heck of a job in the draft and during the season running this team. As we entered April, the Bambinos didn't look this good on paper so again kudos to the Karl for the job he's done.
In It To Win It: My co-manager picked the name but I liked it enough to keep it. Not totally my style, but it works. Onward... Like the Bambinos, I don't think our bats looked too strong on paper back in April. They've come through although we missed out on several free agents in the last month that I think have cost us at least 50-60 pts in batting in the overall standings. While our team has settled into the top 10 for awhile now, I look back at the draft and see plenty of mistakes we made. You don't have to be perfect or even close to perfect to win the 100k. I see a couple of draft day mistakes that we've had trouble correcting during the season that has cost us likely 100 batting and pitching points each. That's a rough estimate but another 200 pts would put us very close to first place. A good lesson learned and it's encouraging to know how close we were to drafting a 100k team. While I'm not ruling us completely out of taking first overall, it will be so tough because the top 2 teams have over 3400 pts. Whew. As the last 1.5 months setup, our team is pretty much set. No bigvholes to patch, simply hope the players produce.
Less Than Dave: Back in June, I thought this was a top 5 overall team. I view the roster and see a great lineup of bats. M Reynolds- unbelievable fantasy year- hitting nearly .290 too. Then the pitching- especially the top 4 starters- and on paper, he looks so tough to beat. Hard to believe he is third in our league. I wouldn't be surprised the least if he finishes strong and in the top 10 overall. I haven't followed any team extemely close except our own, and I'm honestly not sure how Dave has faired with FAAB this year. No matter what Gekko says, the top 3 teams in this league did a great job on draft day.
Bull Pen Pugs: This is an easy team to figure out. I don't know what percentage of his league points come from batting but I would bet confidently that he has a lot more pitching points than batting points in our league. Too many injuries to some of his top bats. If the hitters stay healthy, you have to figure he's a top 15 team overall and likely challenging for the league championship.
Got side tracked. Good luck next year, Russel. I'll be back in Chicago again so I'm sure I'll be in the same league with some of you guys.
