Gents,

Looking forward to the draft and upcoming season. I had 15 as my last pick (though I definitely did not go Straight Butter as Greg calls it), so not too happy drafting at the bottom...not so much for first two picks but for how I like to draft in general. That said, should be great. See you in a week.

More and more, this scenario seems likely:

Schwhks on the clock with pick 15:

Then sit back for 30 picks and watch the madness unfold.

Gents, Nice drafting with you guys. I think I met most of you minus a couple, so it was good meeting you all as well (I was Team 15).

I love to talk strategy so here was my thoughts going in. Didnt believe in Childs strategy this year. Wanted 120 hr and 50-60 sbs with a 280 avg after 4 rounds, with the following gone after 7 rds: 2 of, 1b, 3b, 2sp and a position player not already mentioned.

Predraft I was hoping for Tulo to fall to me, but assumed that he wouldnt (though he did in the league next to ours). I was locked on to J Upton for his potential 5 categories. I was undecided on other pick. I did nto think Wright would fall to me and I was not sure I wanted him...still am not sure.

In the end, I decided to roll the dice because of his position and previous consistancy and age.

So I feel like Upton, Wright, Kendry and Cruz get me in the 120 range if not quite there. I also feel like I have in the 60 sb range and a 280 + avg.

I then intended to go sp at 5-6 turn unless there was a crazy sp run early which thre really wasnt.

Pick 7 finished up my 7 pick block...and I took Lopez, who I love as totally undervalued this year.

In second 7, I wanted a closer, a catcher, ss, 2 sps and another OF. This was where it fell apart. I took ALexei at 8...and I think I could have waited and done equally well later, meanwhile the sps and quality OFs were flying off the board. I took Marmol at 9 and even though I like him, I think this is the kind of year to wait on closers and mix/match a franklin Morales witha Kerry wood type of thing. Again it cost me sps and of.

I also think Montero at 10.1 was a mistake. Sure I like him, but does Snyder get two or three game s a week? ANd what does Montero give that B Molina doesnt give 4 rounds later?

From that point onward, I was forever hoping on sps and ofs. And we all know where hope gets you.

I know Mark disagrees but I like de la Rosa a lot at 11. But from that point on, I needed to pummel sps and i did not.

This was my first year, and my mid-end strategy was off. I also think I overestimated the SP pool, which is a case of bad pre-draft analysis. Ended up with a ton of guys who I hate: Maybin, Coglin, E Santana, Papi and envision a bottom third finish.

Would love to hear your strategies and how they played out. GOod luck.

I was at pick 14 sitting next to Doug. Then I sat next to him on the 7 train on the way home. We were talking about the draft and Doug missed his stop. Glad to see you made it home Doug!...LOL.

I love my pitching but my hitting, not so much. I wrote a blog about my draft. You can check it out if you have the time.

Doug Doug, it was a pleasure meeting you as well. There are paper tigers and teams that exceed your initial expectations. It is hard to ascertain how well anyone truly did or did not do at the draft, until the season is progressing, which will also be subject to spotting and landing those FAAB gems.

I actually like your picks of Maybin and Coghlan. Desmond Jennings can be a real steal if Crawford gets dealt by the deadline.

For my team, I was attempting to get the best available player at the right value. In years past, I think that I was a little too position-oriented and passed up on some talent. I was happy to grab Morneau in Round 4.

Best of luck!

Mike

Mike,

Mourneau in 4th was a great value. Spinal fractures, while they sound bad, are actually much more benign then herniations or bulging discs. So Mourneau should be 100% and primed for another great year. I mentioned that to Jersey hitmen, sitting to my left, when you made the pick. Since I do not think that they have loaded in the draft results yet, I cant comment ont he rest of your squad.

That was funny missing my stop. Fortunately, I got another train going other way immediately. Either way it was good drafting next to you and reviewing our teams together on the 7 train.

Just an observation...I checked draft results and it appears that all main leagues have been loaded except for NY leagues.

As a "heads up", I sought to drop Freddy Sanchez and pick up a free agent 2B. I would have plugged the free agent at 2B today.
