Can we do early drafts without the SLOW part?

Post by davetniagarafalls » Thu Jan 19, 2012 8:15 pm

I don't follow the posts as much as some others do ... most others do. So this may have been raised. And if so, feel free to delete the threat. But is there a reason why we can't offer early drafts without the SLOW part? I imagine there are some owners who want the time to do research WHILE the draft is going on. But a lot, I expect, want to do early drafts because they think their knowledge level at this time of the year is better than others. So given that the software is working fine, can't we just offer some regular (same costs) drafts for those who want them? Thanks! Dave

If we felt we could fill satellite leagues in January we'd offer them all day long. Our past history has shown that satellites offered in late February even have trouble filling and I'm not sure we've ever filled more than 2 $125's in the month of February. So offering them this early doesn't seem feasible. Maybe next year we'll offer one per week in January and February and you folks can prove us wrong. But we just don't think folks are ready in February to play satellite leagues in masses like the Slow Drafts with no in-season moves are doing.

Are we wrong?

The question here might not be for a satellite league, but rather for a non FAAB 50 round league which conforms to all of the same rules as the slow drafts without the slow.

Makes sense to me, not sure if that's what Dave was trying to convey, but I like it.

Joe, that's easy. If 15 people want to do that and agree to sit down for 6 hours to draft 50 rounds we'll do it. In fact, it would be set up the same way as it is now and everyone would just have to agree on a draft date and starting time. I'm cool with any of this, as long as there are 15 owners ready to do it. In fact, I think Gekko brought this up at the beginning of the Slow Draft season and I told him to find 14 more owners and we'll do it.

I'm up for a ???? hr slow draft of 50 picks. lets check the math. 50 rounds, 15 picks a round would be 750 picks. at a minute each pick, that would be 750 minutes or almost 13 hours. so i woud propose making it over 2 days, stopping it for 10 hours the first night and doing it on a weekend. Anyone joining somehting like this should or better know how to use the Auto pick and Que.

People have done these in 1 day before and they were able to get them done in less than 6 hours. Actually, we ran these at $500 price points in the past as private leagues. You'd have to get the right people who are committed to picking quickly, as you say, likely 30 seconds per pick to get this done.

Well if it's been done b4 I woud be in for doing one. Start a new signup thread Greg for a Fast Fifty, I'm sure those that signup would understand what 30 seconds is. thats still about 6 minutes between picks. I know i can do it in 30 seconds.

Put me down if you start a signup list. Thanks.

Pick a date and start it out. I have no idea when you guys want to draft for 6+ hours. Saturday? Thursday? Morning? Night? Lead the charge and we'll gladly run it.

Doughy - I've spent the past couple of week cramming for the NFBC test. I should be ready to roll very soon. And best of all, I'm playing this year under my own name. Sign up Srebro

Good deal, Mark.
That's a helluva lot more interesting.

By the way. make room for a 30 round draft w/faab. I know you prefer no faab, but I'm cooking up an idea that I hope will fly.
I'll PM you when I get things finalized on this end.
Good luck with the sign ups.

Dan - Unless something changes, I'm only having one managed team this year. Just too much of a time commitment during the season.

It's a huge commitment to do draft 6 hours in one sitting.

For those who wish to accelerate their draft without sitting through 6 or more hours, I would propose the following:

- Live draft for the first 30 Rounds. Slow draft for the last 20 Rounds. This could potentially shave off 14 days from the typical slow draft completion delays (typically 21 days).

One more point. I think the popularity of slow drafts as well as the high number of participants who only do show drafts, no longer justifies qualifying them as "prep" for some other type of draft.

Your message board comment that appears for every slow draft league currently states:
Slow Drafts will continue through March and they are just like Sit-n-Go's where we run them as soon as they fill up. Jump in when you're ready because they are great prep for the live drafts.
I think the Slow Draft concept is a game unto itself. Those who have done a few, can appreciate its chess-like qualities and how in a 15-team set-up, stocks can deplete rather precipitously and leave you holding the proverbial empty bag.

I would humbly submit that there needs to be a change of thinking at NFBC -- Slow Drafts are greatly appealing and do not deserve to be dismissed as merely "prep". I would respectfully ask that your message board text be changed accordingly.
