And in Roto news...
Mark Reynolds is trying to lose weight to become more nimble in the field. Reynolds fielding was bad enough at the hot corner to have Buck Showalter switch him over to first base. Deep inside, I think most Managers think of first base as the last resting place before becoming a designated hitter. If you can't make it there, bringing a glove to the field becomes optional.
The bad news is in fantasy circles, we rats ass what a guy does in the field. Reynolds, in losing weight could zap the only reason why he is selected in drafts, his power. What is Mark Reynolds next year without 3b position and less power?
Carlos Pena......
Wilson Betemit just signed a two year deal with an option for a third with the Orioles. If no signing has sent a message to the Damon, Guerrero, Ibanez types, this one does. It signals that still being able to play defense is important in real baseball. I had a post last year that MLB teams were phasing out the DH as we knew it. Guys like Guerrero and Damon and even the horrific defense of Juan Pierre and Ibanez turns these players into baseball hobo's. They can accept a large pay decrease and hang around, retire like Posada, or fade away like a Dye or Lofton......
The arbitration difference between Emilio Bonifacio's figure and the figure by the Marlins was a measly (in baseball terms) $200,000. Bonifacio was the Marlins best player last year except for Mike Stanton. They can bat him anywhere and play him anywhere in the field. The Marlins went out and spent more money over the off season than almost every other team.
And yet, they go to arbitration with Bonifacio over 200 grand. Sometimes these teams get so caught up in newer players and stars that they put the cart in front of the horse when dealing with others.....
The Seattle 'defense first' experiment failed miserably. No matter how well a guy like Jack Wilson or Brendan Ryan fields the ball, it is all foiled when they take their turn at the plate.
This year, a new experiment from another GM.
During the off-season, Dan O'Dowd has accumulated the best of clubhouse types. Michael Cuddyer, Ramon Hernandez, and Marco Scutaro, all lauded in other clubhouses come to the Rockies. O'Dowd has also sent dissidents Ian Stewart and Chris Iannetta packing. The new players are already established in what they can do on the field, but admired by players more for their personalities off the field.
It should be interesting to see how the Colorado Rockies, or maybe, 'Colorado Choirboy's' perform this year.
I have to hand it to Francisco Cordero's agent. Each blurb, he makes it sound like his client has control in which team Cordero goes to. The reality is that Cordero probably has few offers and that nothing is for the money he thought he would get when the off season began. His days as a closer are most likely over unless signing with Baltimore.
With the reports of Mark Trumbo and Kendry Morales not being all that great, are the Angels thinking of going back to the four outfield rotation of last year. Is this why none of the outfielders were dealt after they signed Pujols?
Makes one wonder if Angels Management knows a lot more than they are letting on about the health of some of their players.
A part of me did not like the signing of Kuroda by the Yankees. When I first got the news that Pineda was traded to the Yanks, it made me think that the Yankees may set some kind of vertical record next year-
Sabathia 6'7"
Burnett 6'5"
Pineda 6'5"
Hughes 6'5"
Nova 6'4"
That is some pretty tall cotton. Kuroda becomes the 'shrimp' at 6'1"....

Like Madson, he tried for more money by spurning his old team and got burned.
Cordero in the A.L. East. And not even as a closer.
Cordero joins Mark Melancon in having little to no fantasy value after ending last season as semi-reliable closers.
