In last draft posted I noticed 5 SP taken in 1st & 2nd rd's (Kershaw/Verlander/Doc/Lee/Timmy) then a looong wait, esp for the NFBC, not til the 1st pk of the 4th rd was King Felix chosen! Wow, what value

* I took out non SP in rd 4 for easier viewing of 9 SP taken that rd

Round 4:
4 1 Felix Hernandez SP
4 2 CC Sabathia SP
4 3 Stephen Strasburg SP
4 7 Cole Hamels SP
4 10 Jered Weaver SP
4 12 Zack Greinke SP
4 13 David Price SP
4 14 Yovani Gallardo SP
4 15 Dan Haren SP
Round 5:
5 1 Ian Kennedy SP

even rd 5 started w/ a SP just to leave no doubt

good stuff Greg, very interesting :ugeek:
Always be closing.

My grandson has little interest in baseball, but a keen interest in math. He is bored when I'm listening to a fantasy show on XM in the car, so I asked him to count how many times the word 'value' is used. A half hour show, with commercials, he counted 'value' 22 times. Probably over one time a minute.
It is easily the most overused word in fantasy sports this time of year. It is just that time of year when players have to assess something to their draft picks. Reality is that it is 30 or 50 names that carry our hopes.
There is nothing tangible really, but we can't have that!
After the season begins, most folks don't care where they drafted the players, only how they are performing.
The perceived value becomes real. It's all just the nature of our beast.

One thing though, the interviews with those that have won the overall usually show us that the Champion had a method, a strategy, or certain players they were targeting. I may have missed it, but haven't heard one credit their 'value' picks....just sayin' :)

I "value" "sleepers" based on "experts" "projecting" season totals using one month worth of stats.

Did I miss any?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

What kind of "value" did you get?

Rockit --- Almost like it's the "year of the pitcher" again like 1968. Let me have Bob Gibson in the last round, maybe he still has something left.

I know there will be those who back him or have already taken him in drafts.
But, why does Carl Crawford merit third round picks? We are drafting for 2012, right?
Crawford starts the year with an injury, playing for a team that he hasn't played well for, and hitting down in the lineup. That's a trio of things that has me scared.
He could start the year when Ryan Braun does, or at the least, be nursing an injury before Braun gets back.
Somebody set me straight. Why is Carl Crawford a third round pick?

Some experts project him to have elite upside, which would be quite a value in the third round.

How about something tangible?
He has elite upside (sigh) because of what he did in Tampa. He has under performed as a Red Sox player and unlike last year, he starts the season with an injury and a place in the lower part of the order.
Are the 'experts' really dictating third round or is it pie in the sky hopes?

I'm not ripping on Carl Crawford. I think he has a great head on his shoulders, great athlete, and a great player on most teams.
But, he seems like a square peg in a round hole there.
Also, I'm trying to promote talk about players. There doesn't seem to be near the opinion of players as in past years.
Have the slow drafts taken the place of opinions?

Dan, these last four draft results show that Crawford's value is definitely declining since the announcement of his wrist injury. In the four drafts listed above, he went 3.12, 3.9, 4.12 and 5.6. That's a decline from his ADP of around 31, 32 earlier in the year. Granted, in two of the drafts above he remained in the third round, but in two of them he did drop to the fourth and fifth rounds. I just looked at two more and he went 5.10 and 4.4. So his stock is definitely falling and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to remain in the fourth and fifth rounds when he's out of sight and out of mind during spring training.

Good subject to bring up. I agree, I'm ready to discuss more player values, too. Maybe they are being determined in the Slow Drafts, which is why opinions are limited on the Message Boards. With 40+ actual drafts going on so far, maybe talk is cheap!!

I spent $195 on Crawford in the MLBC league and that is the only pick of all the high priced players I bought that I'm kicking myself in the arse about.

What's worse....$195 in real money or a 3rd round pick?

Damn, typing that question written like that now I'm REALLY pissed off.

Dough I totally agree with you. Crawford has good upside, with the potential to be elite I guess, but I will not be rostering him in any round before 6 or 7. Therefor, I will not be rostering him in 2012, because there is always that guy who is smarter than the rest who jumps on the player that is sure to repeat his numbers from 4 years ago because he is now on their team for this year
Nope not me, too much risk with the injuries and where will he hit in that lineup? Too many lefties towards the top half of Boston's lineup and like you said, square peg, round hole.

I was just trying to goad you with all of your favorite words. I agree completely that Crawford is largely unrosterable at his current ADP or anything within two rounds of it. Back end of the fifth I'd start to get real tempted, but still would probably pass.

I guess it doesn't make much difference right now.
As Greg said, his adp is getting lower as the seriousness of the injury starts soaking in to drafters.
When Crawford misses spring training and begins the year on the disabled list, it could be then that he'll be looked at as a player who should not be taken that high.
Nick Markakis has gone as low as the 10th round in early drafts. Besides, the possibility of some speed, Crawford has little to offer over Markakis. Markakis has been the face of durability and will be in the middle of the Orioles order.
Crawford is a sexier pick, but the best looking girls usually come with the biggest headaches. :)
