Interesting OC Draft

Post by CALI CARTEL » Wed Mar 21, 2012 1:15 am

In a 12-teamer with C&D tonight; but the interesting thing was the guy picking 12th...

1.12 - Verlander
2.01 - Kershaw
3.12 - Hamels
4.01 - Greinke
5.12 - Gallardo
6.01 - Kimbrel
7.12 - Darvish
8.01 - M.Rivera
9.12 - Putz

First 3 hitters:

10.01 - David Ortiz, that's right, a DH-only as his first hitter through 10 picks
11.12 - Melky Cabrera, alright now we're cookin'
12.01 - Ryan Howard, KABOOOOOM!!!! Because when you wait until round 10 to take your first hitter, the guy you are looking for in the 12th is a guy who's gonna be out 2 months, well played sir.

it seemed after that pitcher run he selected, he was making almost every pick with the highest ADP/Ranking left. like Helton, Chipper, Jason Bougoius, Byrce harper, juan pierre, Jason Bartlett. Definatley a different strategy. he should be close to getting 60 points from pitching, but i got 59 pts in one league last year in pitching and didnt come close becuase of weak hitting. That team from last year was not drafted however using this strategy, it was just weak on hitting. seemed to be a lot of quality players left at the end of this draft, so plenty of help should be there for everyone. not many propects taken either.

sounds like a 60 pitching and 5 in hitting . Nice draft for the rest of u . someone in your draft has to be stacked at hitting . wow $ 350 down the drain . 0ne less guy i have to worry about in the overall . :D

It's kind in calling it a 'strategy'.
It sounds more like laziness.

my team projects out to this on hitting...granted 3 of them will not always be playing, plus FAAB tweaks during the yr on my hitters and pitching... i got most the pitchers i wanted, just no top 10 "stud"

R HR RBI SB BA
1371 351 1292 245 0.274

2 or 3 other teams look good in hitting too...Chad shcroeder being one- he took only 3 pitchers in his first 14 rounds

The one chance this guy had to compete after that start was to draft all speed and average with his next 7-8 picks. That's where the Ortiz and Howard picks make no sense. He has no shot at competing in HR/RBIS but if he were able to gather speed and a decent batting average along with some points in runs scored, then he would have had a shot at competing for 2nd or 3rd. No chance at an overall. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the OC to draft so foolishly. What a waste of $350.

There were a few teams who put together some big offenses; in addition to that guy with all the SP, the top pick went P-P at the 2-3 turn, and another guy went 3 closers in the top 10 rounds and no SP until round 16; so the pitching was spread out a little stranger than a normal draft.

I ended up with this, big counting numbers and I think my SP is top notch considering the guy loaded up with a lot of the good options each round; gonna need some breaks in Average and a closer off waivers to be in serious contention tho...

CI: Teixeira, Beltre, Hosmer, Moreland, Wigginton
MI: Hardy, K.Johnson, A.Hill, Furcal
OF: Kemp, Choo, Crawford, Rios, Mayberry, Presley
C: Mauer, R.Martin
DH: Butler
SP: Haren, Wainwright, D.Hudson, McCarthy, Minor, Billingsley, Capuano, Teheran, Harang
RP: Street, Guerra, K.Jansen

Not really a fan of your pitching, your K's are gonna suck (you have a ton of low K/9 guys in Buchholz, Leake, Porcello, Cecil -- I fell into the same situation last year and was chasing K's all year while trying to not crush my ERA/WHIP with waiver options).

I did like the Worley & Alvarez picks and can't argue with your closers tho; I had Worley queued up ready to go when you snagged him, so settled on Kenley instead to handcuff Guerra.

You are correct, but presently i am projecting them out to 1435K's as a staff with Samardzija only at 92. if he proves out to be decent SP he could easily climb to 175 alone. i like what i have seen with him this spring as he makes the transistion to SP. I've always been better at pitching anaylsis, so this yr is why I have decided to tilt at hitting and I know that some dont agree, but we shall see.

Projecting the whole staff's totals is a little dangerous. I find that teams usually get about 100% out of their top 4 SP and their top 2 Closers, but after that it's a sliding scale downward in terms of projections that'll actually be added to your team. The total will add up to more than 900% (9 x 100%; I've setting around 1050% in total production), but you can't get 100% out of every guy on your roster, if you did you'd be upwards of 1200% (12 x 100%) and that's too much to project from your guys, no matter how low/high you have each individual player.

Using my method and projections, I've got your team coming out right around 1180-1200 k's. Everyone's projections are gonna be a little different, but I think 1400+ for that group is a little aggressive.

your entire staff 9 starters and your 3 closers might get 1400+ k's.But choosing which 9 to start every week will make for a lot of correct decisions.2 closers =7 starters or 3 closers +6 starters or no closers and all starters.should have your team with about 1200 k"s at seasons end ,IMO.good luck for I always start the wrong guy and always have the 3 saves on the bench that week :D :D

I would like to see your hitters with these projections please.... Are you counting your subs stats too into your overall numbers???? You should only be counting your starters and if you are I need to see the roster... After seeing your projections for your pitchers below I believe that you are probably way off as you would be lucky to get 1200K's from your pitching staff.. Good luck and can't wait to see the bats..

With all of the abuse you have been getting for your drafts, you have stayed the course. I have to give you credit for not backing down. I like the fact that you draft this way since your strength is analyzing pitchers and you seem to consistantly stick with the same core of young pitchers (Alvarez, Leake, Buckholz) . In a 12 team league, there are definitely going to be pitchers available in FAAB. I am sure your hitting is top notch. In a few of the previous leagues, you had a few more decent bottom end pitchers, which I don't see in this league. Don't like Cecil or Porcello at all. Good luck. I am very interested in finding out how you do this year. I have taken on a similar approach on pitching, though not waiting quite as long as you are.

you are 100% correct, the beauty of managing your weekly lineup. I will go with the 3 closers to cement the Saves, era and whip for probably half a season and see where i am. We all live and learn, as i try to do... And I've been doing at lot of learning the past 2 yrs. with pitching, i like young, i like upside, especially after 2-3 yrs in majors, i like a lot of innings and i like health. as for projections, i take 5 different ones, comibine them all into one, that gives me an avg and then i tweak each players numbers as to what i think i can add or subtract. granted i use others projections for a baseline, but in the end they are mine. and projections as a whole are just that and mean nothing until the all Stats are in for the season. One thing i see all the top players here at nfbc do, is they study, study and study some more. And i especially like what the Champ said after winning again, that he see's stuff in the numbers and obviously he sees more than most. And as i have always said to others over many years in business, the numbers never lie and neither do the averages or the trends. down is down and up is up. As BK Mets said below, he has picked up on i'm not really wavering on my strategies this year. I am intent on fixing past hitting Cat issues and hoping i can manage the ptiching. if it doesnt pan out, lesson elarned for next year.

I don't like any strategy in a national championship that punts on a category.

I like to punt on positions where I think I might get real production in later rounds. I think that is possible this year with 3rd base & short stop and to a lsightly lesser extent 2nd base. But giving up on a category before the season has started? Not for me.

Im banking on Cecil especially. He lost 35 pounds since end of last year, reported to camp in awesome shape and has a goal to make himself better. He has been awesome so far this spring and his FB is hopping and moving. Russell is a pitching coach who i respect and he obviuolsy is working with him.
Spring stats Cecil, B TOR 3- 0 era- 0.90 starts -4 IP- 10.0, hits- 6, runs- 1, ER- 1, BB-3, K-s- 6, BAA-.167 Whip-0.90

another guy i like is Bronson arroyo- first time ever he didnt spend the off season playign music and isntead worked his tail off all winter to get in shape. stated he was embarrassed the past 2 years because he was lazy in the off season. 200 IP for him is a given if hes healthy and possibly some good numbers.

Agreed... I look at past league standings and i wonder how people can only score 30-40 points all season in a 12 teamer for instance. granted major injuires and such, but there are a lot...

in all hoensty, i had the third pick and was auto picked Granderson, becuase i got back to my hotel 5 minutes after the draft started. it was pick 7 i believe when i got back and thought about asking Tom to roll back, but it was my fault. so right from the start i was in scramble mode as i would've taken Kemp or Bautista. All my fault, as I was at the Mets/Strasburg game in Florida. BTW Strasburg was unbelievable in person and Dillon Gee was also very impressive.

my first 8
Granderson, Curtis CF NYY
Pedroia, Dustin 2B BOS
McCutchen, Andrew CF PIT
Uggla, Dan 2B ATL
McCann, Brian C ATL
Wright, David 3B NYM
Rollins, Jimmy SS PHI
Reynolds, Mark 3B BAL

I was picking 4th right after him and nearly soiled myself when I saw Granderson pop up #3 overall -- I went Kemp, would've gone Tulo had he gone Kemp instead.

How were you possibly Auto-Picked Granderson is my question? In order for him to be autopicked, he needed to be at the top of your predraft list or in your queue -- it's not like the system picks some random body to pick for you.
