my first weekend Main Event team

Post by PGromek » Sun Mar 25, 2012 12:32 pm

did I execute or screw the pooch? :D The next 6 months will of course tell me that.

13th pick

(1) Prince Fielder - I wanted to start my team with a good power base and with a guy that has a good track record of health. I got that with Fielder

(2) Curtis Granderson - I'm a believer in Granderson. The power is real and his home ballpark plays to that. Will provide contributions in all 4 counting categories. I now have a solid power base to start my team.

(3) Alex Gordon - I love to build my offense around a strong outfield and Gordon is my kind of player. Contributions across the board and he's now entering his peak production years on a good offensive club.

(4) David Price - I was thinking about going offense here again but instead settled on a rotation anchor in Price. All the indicators are pointing in the right direction for this guy and we probably still haven't seen his best.

(5) Madison Bumgarner - I think Madison has a one-way ticket to Ace-ville. I love young pitchers who already exhibit great command. Price-Bumgarner gives me a solid pitching base to start off with.

(6) Jonathan Papelbon - I rarely take a top closer early but I'm a fan of doing it this year. Pap is as rock-solid a bet for 35-40 saves as you'll find. I'm not sure I want to be chasing saves all year in FAAB.

(7) Cory Luebke - I like everything I see here. K's, good command, pitchers park.

(8) Cameron Maybin - my name is Paul and I'm a Cameron Maybin fan. I need the steals and I like the improving plate discipline. Sky could be the limit.

(9) Joel Hanrahan - The opportunity was there to get 2 top-tier closers so I took it. Hanrahan is a guy I trust. Not my usual plan to have 2 closers by round 9.

10) Melky Cabrera - I really like this guy and maybe that puts me in the minority. I could see regression here but IMO it won't be much. I think he's a guy with skills who's coming into his own. My strong OF is rounding into form.

11) Dustin Ackley - I like him in the #2 spot in that lineup. He has the look of a professional hitter who will make the necessary adjustments. He will contribute across the board.

12) Derek Holland - has the look of a young pitcher who finally "gets it". He will win ballgames in Texas.

13) Adam Dunn - Dunn's ego took a major hit last year. He is much better than that. Lindy's theory about targeting last year's bums has some merit I think. I couldn't pass on that kind of power potential at this point in the draft.

14) Kelly Johnson - Power and speed. #2 hitter in front of Bautista, Encarnacion, and Lind. Sign me up.

15) Kurt Suzuki - time to dip my toe into the catcher pool. I'll take Suzuki's 15 homers and decent counting stats.

16) Hiroki Kuroda - he's fine for my #5 starter at this point

17) Matt Harrison - I love me some Texas starters. He's a guy that is a bit undervalued IMO.

18) JD Martinez - A young buck with some pop who the Astros will trot out there every day in the middle of the lineup.

19) Justin Smoak - A gamble that I'm willing to take. I think the first half of last season is closer to the real Justin Smoak.

20) Luke Hochevar - Finished last year strong and is having a good spring. May have figured things out.

21) Jed Lowrie - at this point in the draft I've punted 3B and SS. Lowrie is eligible at both spots and will get an opportunity in Houston and has shown past skills.

22) Marco Scutaro - nothing flashy but he's the starting shortstop in Colorado and will get ABs

23) Rod Barajas - my #2 catcher. has some pop.

24) Felipe Paulino - guy with a plus arm who has shown flashes.

25) Cliff Pennington - hitting the ball well this spring. stole 29 bags 2 years ago. I'm a bit short on speed.

26) James McDonald - young arm who is still waiting to take the next step

27) Francisco Cordero - I don't have a 3rd closer but F-Cord will likely run into some save opps this year

28) Ian Stewart - the ultimate flyer. Cubs seems committed to him at this point. that could change quickly.

29) Paul Maholm - not sure why I made this pick actually :) I always seem to end up with Maholm on a team.

30) Johnny Damon - can a brother find a job?

mediocre offense 250hr, 150sb, .265 avg
great pitching (which is to be expected)

such a low batting avg almost eliminates any chance at an overall title IMO

I may try to mitigate some of the BA risk next week.

it's been my experience that avg is the toughest offensive category to correct for on the waiver wire, because the possible pickup still needs to have good counting stats. in that case, you are talking about a free agent most teams will covet.

IMO luebke was taken too early and was complete overkill. trade luebke for a stud hitter with a nice batting average (and push closers a bit for offense) and i like the team more :)

"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good"

that was the quote running through my mind when I picked Luebke

k.johnson in the 14th is MONEY imo! if he missed on him, the offense would have been in a lot worse shape. for me, i wasn't a fan of 5 picks of the last 7 picks. i wouldn't consider any of those guys even in 30th round. but that is being nit picky ;)

I was in this league and he was one that royally screwed me on KJ (or another 2B). When it got to me in the 13th, I needed a 2B, but there were 4 guys I still liked that were on the board KJ, Kipnis, Walker & AHill. Behind me were 6 teams, 4 of which already had a starting 2B (but all needed MI). I decided to gamble and took Encarnacion in the 13th to be my dual eligible CI or DH-type guy; and then proceeded to watch all 4 of the 2B go around the turn with Neil Walker going the pick before me to one of the two guys who needed a 2B starter.

You have solid pitching, but I had your team with light hitting as well, only the Runs were above average for the league; but had you with a 2 in AVG, 1 in RBI and 3 in SB -- not an easy combination of things to try to fix.

I like some of your individual picks, but don't neccessarily like the team construction, if that makes any sense. After Grandy, you took 4 guys (Gordon, Maybin, Cabrera, Ackley) who will hit 1st or 2nd in their lineup along with Scutaro and Johnson. You'll score lots of runs, but be way short in RBIs. BA is a problem too, but you need to keep Dunn in the lineup or you are toast in HRs. SP is really good, but I think you went way way too early on the closers.

Good luck.

I used to be one of the biggest "wait on pitching" guys around. I'm just not convinced you can be consistently successful with it in today's game. It's becoming more and more difficult to get your pitching "sleepers" in the draft. and the bar has been raised in terms of the stats you need to accumulate to compete in the pitching categories.

i think all sleepers are tougher to get. i mean look at what happened to l.cain and presley this past weekend. cain looks primed for a 20/20 run and presley looks to be the new and improved pagan

that is true...I have no problem moving guys up the draft board. ADP goes out the window pretty quick.

I'd rather lose with "my guys" than take "value" that falls and regret it. I'm looking for a certain type of player in the draft.

if cain goes 20/20 or better  people will say his owners just got lucky.

NO. we thought he'd produce good numbers AND we had the balls to jump him well b4 his adp. sure i could have drafted a pig like willingham, but what fun is there with that.
