Please Grade this Team

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Tue Apr 03, 2012 9:30 am

Now, you think I'm going to give you a team of mine to judge, right?
Wrong!
Feel free to comment on this crappy team as you'd like!

I want to look back at this post at the end of the year and see how stupid/smart I am.
I'm drafting a team round by round of what I feel would be the worst possible draft.
The perameters are that I must take somebody who has an adp from within each of those rounds.
For me, players to avoid on draft day.
If you own these players, my condolences. Or maybe you can post how stupid I was after the season is over....
Let's take a look....

1. Prince Fielder- His ADP did not move after the trade. Crazy. Here's a guy going to a new league, bigger ball park, with a full wallet. Look up ahead, construction zone, man waving red flag. You should have seen it before taking Prince.

2. Giancarlo Stanton- I like Stanton. I do. And the ball park looks like it'll play a little smaller than advertised.
What I don't like is that he gets boo-boo's weekly and that his batting average will probably be in the .250 range. For a second rounder, I want more. More stability and more average and more speed, more runs, just more.

3. Ryan Zimmerman- If he weren't a 3b, where would you draft him? Probably a full three or four rounds later. Maybe down to Corey Hart territory. He'll get hurt. You know it. Zimmerman is a fav of the 'Cover position' set. Not much is covered when he's hurt though.

4. Brian McCann- Another fav of the cover the position mob. McCann just never returns 4th round numbers. He's always taken there though. Some players are just cemented at certain spots in drafts year after year, McCann is one of those guys.
Wieters and Montero, later, will give you most everything you need.

5. Buster Posey- And already I've wrapped up my two catchers. This is good cuz it's too easy to criticize second catchers later.
Posey just learned how to run last month. Think about that.

6. Carl Crawford- Nostalgia buffs draftee. I like Crawford. Good kid that tries hard. But, HE'S HURT. And, IT'S THE WRIST.
The bad year doesn't have to be mentioned. Those red flags should have been observed.

7. Mark Reynolds- If taking both Stanton and Reynolds, I'll write you off as being Lou Ferrigno fans. The problem is that Reynolds lost 20 pounds to impress Buck that he is nimble enough to play 3b. As a fantasy player I stay away from somebody thinking defense. The weight loss may have contributed to Reynolds having just a lone home run during spring. Without power, his drafters may as well have Omar Vizquel. He's still nimble at 3b too.

8. Matt Garza- My first pitcher. Garza pitches for himself this year. No defense. No offense. His style changes to wiffle ball. He'll go for strike outs which will help that column, but more mistakes are made doing this, so I expect a rising WHIP and ERA to accompany it.

9. Drew Storen- Never take closers that haven't thrown in weeks. Just don't.

10. Adam Lind- The Blue Jays are crowded around the corners and dh. If Lind or Encarnacion falter, they may be treading water trying to get in the lineup all year. Lind has had one good year. The 10th round is filled with promise, you could do better.

Already, I've painted myself in a corner. Even though I have two catchers and 3b covered, I'm already using the U and only have a starter and closer. This team is destined for a 300-420 overall finish.

11. Carlos Marmol-I could have gone the easy route and taken Madson or Pineda, instead, I'll take the guy who will be harder on me. Marmol invented giving up five runs while not in a position to get a save. Last year, he did it WHILE trying to get a save.

12. Ubaldo Jimenez- He's on my shitlist, so a perfect place to take him. It seems Jimenez has rode the coat tails of a great half year longer than Debbie Gibson. If you asked, 'Who?', we'll be saying the same thing about Ubaldo in five years.

13. Yoenis Cespedes- Maybe no player in Major League Baseball looks better with his shirt off. Bo Jackson would break bats with his bare hands after striking out, Cespedes should rip off his uniform top, Hulk style.
He'll swing at a lot of balls and won't get many strikes.

14. Aaron Hill- Like Lind, Hill is still riding one good year. That year separates him from Gordon Beckham. But, Beckham doesn't cost a 14th round pick.

15- Johan Santana- Nostalgic drafters again. Do we worry more about how many innings he'll have or how effective he'll be during those innings.
Don't worry, be happy you didn't draft the angst.

16- Chris Carpenter- The staff on this team looks excellent! If I were drafting five years ago.

17- Alcides Escobar- Remember the girl with the great face, but no boobs or butt. That is Escobar. We'll call her Judy.

18- Trevor Cahill- Bad year in Oakland. I know! Let's put him in a park where balls fly out!
Schmart!

19- Aroldis Chapman- Electric arm. But, like diamond earrings on a pig, it doesn't help us or the pig unless it's in the right situation.

20- Mitch Moreland- I like Moreland. If he had an everyday job, I'd bet he could really contribute.
The thing I don't like about Moreland is that, hmm, let's see, HE DOESN'T HAVE AN EVERYDAY JOB!

Roster construction-wise, I'm doing better. I only need a couple of offensive players and pitchers. If every hitter goes back to their best year's the offense could put up good power numbers. The speed and average is already torpedoed and that staff needs help. The kind of help I won't find in rounds 21-30.

21- Stephen Drew- What bad team would be complete without a Drew Bro? Nobody knows when this guy will really be back. Him being drafted in so many drafts remains as much of a mystery as Javier Vazquez being drafted in so many drafts.

22- Javier Vazquez- See 'Stephen Drew'.

23- Rafael Furcal- A latin Ryan Theriot.

24- Seth Smith- He goes from Coors to Oakland and still gets taken around the same area of the draft. Why?

25- Derrek Lee- A trend is forming. He did it 10 years ago, don't these GM's know that he can still do it?
He can't. He won't. It's time to let go.

26- Josh Collmenter- Remember when Collmenter came up and hitters couldn't figure out that funky delivery. They've figured it out. Trevor Bauer is the pick here. I'd even pitch him over Collmenter in April, at least he won't be balooning your stats.

27- Josh Thole- The worst thing a fantasy roster can have is an 'innings eater'.
It's a nice way of saying that a pitcher sucks.
Josh Thole is an offensive innings eater.

28- Joe Saunders- Remember when Saunders used to get batters out?
Neither do I.
He's like Aaron Cook, in a major league rotation, and everybody wonders why.

29- Josh Donaldson- The 'sneaky' catcher. While Thole can consistently put up zero numbers, Donaldson can only strive for that.

30- Alberto Callaspo- Fantasy's answer to playing Bingo.
Yell Bingo! anytime Callaspo plays and you actually have him in the lineup.

So, we finish with this. Now, it's time to look at the Draft Board and see what the 14 other/better teams look like.

If you have a group of these guys, then money means nothing to you.
Or, you could have a good horselaugh at my expense at the end of the year. :D
If you have one or two, you'll be alright. With a different grouping of players some of these picks will be ok.
In a day or two, we'll actually see VALUE.
But, then again, it starts a new season.
The season of....He's ON PACE for blah blah blah

It never ends.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
