The longer I play this game, the more I believe this - who cares. Spend your money however you deem best. If the bids seem out of control to you, you should be happy that these guys are blowing their $$$ early.

We all can save our $ for that key guy in July also....who then bombs.

Nobody knows who will be the key pickups along the way anyway.

So right, Jack.
Nobody ever says that they got 'value' after winning a bid :)

Yep, and from my experience, it is the guy you pick up for a couple bucks as a a "spec play" who busts out, not the $500 acquisition that everybody touts as "can't miss".

Right on, Jack. My guess is 75% of the overall FAAB $$ is wasted on players who are basically neutral, hurtful, or provide replacement level value. How you want to waste it makes little difference.

Biggest bid in the Premature league was Y Cespedes for 771 !! Talk about small sample sizes... if he starts the year with a couple of doubles and goes 3 for 15 to start the year, maybe he can be had for $150-$250... Start the year with 3 HR and whammo!

I got blown out the water in my OC.

Put in $350+ for Marshall
Put in $250+ for Santiago

Marshall went for $650+ & Santiago for $400+

This is from today's Chicago Sun-Times, and gives us a little understanding of why Santiago might not suck:

"Here’s how far Santiago, a former 30th-round draft pick, has come: Three years ago, he was experimenting with a submarine-style delivery. It didn’t work.

But when he went back to overhand, he settled into a different arm slot that produced a consistently better fastball that now sits around 94 mph. Then he discovered a screwball. When he showed up to pitch in the majors briefly last season, he threw five scoreless innings.

He allowed one run this spring and went from having a good shot at making the team to having a crack at the closer’s role."

Last year Melancon was generating $500+ FAAB bids and kept the job in HOU the rest of the year and I'm sure led many a team to a championship. :o That being said, most FAAB bids are a crap shoot at best since they are usually based on ridiculously small sample sizes. The very nature of the beast demands that you react to these sample sizes since if you wait to see larger sample sizes yuo will be left on the outside looking in.

I know it's trite but fantasy baseball is all about hope. One closer on a team equals little hope. Sometimes hope costs $400.

He needed to see what he missed out on.......... :P

Seriously Mark? He was lucky because the hitters he faced. Was he lucky in his first save Moerland, Kinsler, Andrus?

i don't have a need for a closer, so i wasn't going to blow $250+. Moerland, Kinsler, Andrus is quality. what he faced tonight was AAA

Ok, just checking on you. I figured if you were watching baseball some darvish crisis was unfolding or something.

So the point is he wasn't so lucky with whom he faced for his first save attempt. 2 chances, 2 saves against 2 major league teams.

Going forward, MLB will only be awarding .5 of a save when it comes against the bottom of the lineup, the Mariners or the Astros

Hey - we all know if you are a closer or even a quasi-closer - you need to be owned in Roto. I also am invested in A Reed and didn't chase Santiago that heavily, knowing that there would always be someone in my leagues willing to pay more (MUCH more). It was said earlier by Gekko and bug - but I am still betting Santiago doesn't have the stuff to keep this job long-term.

On the other hand - I wish I had bid a little more on Rodriguez or Lidge this week. I think those that bought either of these guys on the cheap (cheaper than Santiago for sure) will be happier in a couple of weeks when Santiago heads back to AA or AAA.

Everyone sees what they want to see.

Here's a fact: Closers don't lose their job unless they start blowing saves or get hurt.
