All Underrated Team

Post by BK METS » Sat Apr 14, 2012 12:59 am

There are a few players that have gone under the radar in fantasy with some not even drafted in many of the live leagues. Here is my all-underrated team: (FYI most of these guys I DID NOT draft)

C - Russell Martin - There is no doubt he has the job on a strong hitting team. He consistantly puts up decent numbers with good power and even a few stolen bases. At a 210 ADP, I think his numbers prove he should have been drafted higher. I was guilty of taking Wieters and Montero in many leagues yet waiting on Martin might have been the smarter play.

1B - Paul Konerko - What does averaging 30+ homers, 100+ RBIs, and .300 BA over the past 11 seasons get you? Well a 65 ADP and a really good pick in the 5th round.... I have him in exactly 0 leagues... Just not smart drafting on my part..

2B - Kelly Johnson - Its been said by someone, I forget who, but his numbers speak for themselves. Although he wont hit for average, he still gets you 20+ homers and a good amount of steals at 2B with a 180 ADP... wow

3B - Edwin Encarnacion - If he could put a full season together, he could hit 30 HR's. Obviously thats a big if, but at a very weak position, getting him in the 13-15th round on average was a steal.

SS - Alex Gonzalez - Undrafted in many leagues... but 15-20 HRs at SS with Tyler Pastornicky, Jed Lowrie, and Mike Aviles drafted before him.. seems strange...

OF - Torii Hunter - A model of consistancy. 20-25 homers, 90-100 RBIs, some steals, .280 BA - and he does it EVERY YEAR. But a 193 ADP - 14th round. Look at some of the guys that went before him. Just a steal that late.

OF - Josh Willingham - A great start to this season, after his nearly 30-100 season last year in only 136 games. A full season and who knows.. but 220 ADP - pretty nice if you got him. Another 0 for me.

SP - RA Dickey - The only consistant Mets pitcher over the past 2+ seasons and he doesnt walk many batters which is strange for a knuckleballer. Another guy who went underdrafted in many leagues. Probably wont win a lot of games, but a pretty good back of your rotation guy in fantasy putting up solid ERA/WHIP and some K's. 14 straight quality starts dating back to last year.

SP - Ervin Santana - Not a great start to the season, but really thought he would be drafted higher after several solid seasons. Has been a little inconsistant, but lots of Ks and plays on a potential 100 win team. We will see if he turns it around this year but still a solid pick in the 13-15th round...

So, that's my list... Thoughts? anyone I missed?

I will add two to the list.

Dexter Fowler - think Cameron Maybin at a discount

Matt Cain - a pitcher usually available in Rounds 5 or 6 but with equal or better "stuff" as all or most pitchers going in Rounds 3 and 4
Mike Mager
"Bronx Yankees"

I will add two names to your list

OF - J.D. Martinez. Batting third, he will post above-average numbers in every hitting category except SB. What's not to like, getting him at an adp of 258.

OF - Nolan Reimold. Batting lead off until Roberts comes back and who knows how long that will take. Power, speed, average, ...all was available at an adp of 304. Wish he was on at least one of my teams.
- Robert

BK, good topic and list. This in my opinion is the essence of fantasy sports, get guys who outperform their draft position. You do that with enough players, and get a little luck along the way, you cash.

Konerko is the king of all underrated -- 2nd round production that goes in the 5th round, every year. I always find myself picking R.A. Dickey many rounds after he should have been picked, gotta love the one and only knuckleballer in MLB now that Wakefield has retired. Many other good names here as well.
