off topic but just had to share

Post by chest .rockwell » Sun Apr 15, 2012 6:24 pm

I was at a charity event Friday night. I have went the last two years and I like going because of the cause, because not a whole lot of exciting things happen in Jacksonville Florida, and I have gotten to meet and have dinner with a lot of athletes that I admire. I also spent my first 6 years of my career in the trade show industry which lead me to meet a lot of athletes, I am also a bit of a jock sniffer if you have not figured out that yet and have collected memorobilia- but generally only want stuff I get signed myself.

I thought I had seen it all and for every total jerk (Albert Belle, Arod, Barry Bonds) I had gotten a chance to meet 5 nice guys (Tony Gwynn, Jeff Bagwell, Frank Thomas, and Dale Murphy come to mind first.

In the course of two hours on Friday night I saw an athlete tell the CEO of Auntie Annies pretzel to get the hell away from him, bark why are you bothering me to a woman who politely asked for a picture, and the most horrific thing I have ever seen an athlete or maybe anyone do be unresponsive and snappy to a kid in a wheel chair. The same kid made Bubba Watson late for wherever he was going because Bubba gets it.

Reading this may waste 15 seconds of your life, but if you tell anyone what a jerk Deion Sanders is then I am glad I wasted your time.

Big shock that Neion is a self absorbed jerk. It's a shame that fame and fortune for him was tied into his great athleticism and even greater self promotion and not the type of person he is.

I hate hearing this stuff, but also want to hear it. It's sad, sad, sad that people can lose perspective. To have so much and give so little back is inexcusable.

I had a friend who went to college with Deion. On occasion, they rode the same bus around the campus. My friend said many if the athletes were on the bus after practice. He said Deion was always a loud mouth, brash a-hole. That always stood out for me.

This though, is absolutely ridiculous and shows the type our person he is. I'm sure the divorce is tough, but the kid in the wheel chair and the way he was treated is BS.

I'm always nervous to meet someone I like because I would hate to have that image ruined our them if they turn out to be an a$$.

My favorite part of my interaction with him was this. I bring 3 kids with disabilities up to him and begin to explain who they are and what our charity does. He puts his hand up 5 seconds in and says only loud enough for me to hear. I get it they are sick kids I will say hi to them.

I cannot kick how awful he was. My wife actually brought it up to me last night out of the blue. I think the biggest tragedy is you cannot be that way unless you are miserable inside. He has every reason in this world to be happy.

On the flip side though from that same night. I say to Gary Sheffield I brought 10 baseballs if you sign them all I can auction them off for charity for1500- 2000 dollars. He looks at me and says I have to go to the bathroom I will catch you later. Another guy watching says good luck with that. I think the same thing. 5 minutes later I look up and Sheff is sitting next to me and signs the baseballs. He then asks about the charity, gives me his assistants cell phone number if he can ever do anything, asks me for a business card and emails me his email address with a message if those kids ever need anything look me up.

In case no one has said it lately, thanks for taking the time to help those kids. I can only imagine what your efforts mean to them.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
