Most impressed by how he took the pitch in the back.
Good for him...

Is the 19 yr old "kid", "boy", "young man" already this hated by all the so called "grown ups" playing the game. Despicable and I hope they hit him hard with a long suspension. Not only that, but how stupid to go after him, when he plays the game the right way and will be golden goose for all of them the next 5 years.

There is one word for him and the others that feel they should despise the kid= Jealously - in its purest form.

Sure hope he doesnt run across the kids father sometime
What a jerk Mr. Hamels!!

Philadelphia Phillies SP Cole Hamels admitted he hit Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper intentionally Sunday, May 6. "I was trying to hit him. I'm not going to deny it," Hamels said. "It's something I grew up watching. That's what happened. I'm just trying to continue the old baseball. Some people get away from it. I remember when I was a rookie, the strike zone was really, really small and you didn't say anything. That's the way baseball is. Sometimes the league is protecting certain players. It's that old-school prestigious way of baseball."

I have to agree with you, that was totally bush-league by Hamels. What exactly is he upset with Harper about? For working so hard that he made it to the majors at the age of 19? For bringing more attention and more money to the game? For leading the Nationals above his floundering Phillies' team?

Did NBA players cut LeBron James out at the knees when he went in for a layup during his first NBA games? Did NHL goons go after Sidney Crosby when he reached the top? Why is there already hatred for someone who really has worked to hone his skills to the point where he's been promoted to the big leagues?

If you've ever seen this kid play, you can tell he has a love for the game. He's baseball smart from playing so much. You saw his instincts last night when he stole home. He can hit any fastball. He has a canon for an arm. He plays the game right and just loves the competition. Will he bring attention to himself and his hairdo? Sure, but he's just 19. He's still more mature than most kids his age. We should appreciate someone this dedicated to the game, not try to bury them.

Hamels should be ashamed of himself. He plucked Harper for no reason and then gloated about it afterwards. Okay, the message has been sent. The Phillies officially know that the Nationals are the team to beat and they're going to play like the Broadstreet Bullies to beat them. Bring it on.

His steal of home was such awesome payback. A thing of beauty. Better than a home run next time up.

Heard he dropped the fly ball in the 9th inning because of the nail holes in his hands.

Hmmmm.

Well - the kid is just getting welcomed to the big leagues. :D

You gotta take your lumps - especially if you are brash and cocky - which Harper is in SPADES!!!! Does everyone forget him admiring his homers in the minors and blowing kisses at the pitchers who served them up? I am not saying what Hamels did was right - but at least he hit him in the back. Gibson or Drysdale would have thrown at his head and had him eating dirt if that kid came up and dug in against them.

I will give Harper defenders this much. The kid is a beast and I love the way he attacks the game (when he isn't acting like a douche) and I am sure that this can rub vets the wrong way sometimes. They like to play the game their way (jogging to first base on routine grounders, watching fly balls that are destined to hit off the wall, lazy throws to the cut-off man) etc. This kid doesn't play that way. Reminds me of what made people like Grady Sizemore so much when he first came up - only Harper has much more talent than Sizemore did. Griffey and Bonds likely are the best comps from recent memory. He's going to be a good one that's for sure.

Rockit - you and your boy Hamels must be cut out of the same cloth...hes an Idiot for admitting it and give him credit for honesty - PLEASE!

5 Games is no where enough for intentionally trying to hurt someone. Should've been 50 at least. Only one other player ever was stupid enough to admit it. If i'm not mistaken the NFL is now suspending people for full seasons and 1/2 season for intent to injure. They get it. What goes around, comes around in Life and for Hamels down the road, he will regret his actions.

That's moronic Outlaw...50 games?! You think Hamels should be suspended for 50 games for admitting he threw at somebody instead of lying about it. These guys been throwing at each other since the 1800's. You think Hamels should get 50 games, what about Jordan Zimmermann? He retaliated and hit Hamels his next time up. Do you think he shouldn't be suspended at all because he didn't admit to it...you actually think that wasn't on purpose?

50 games...that's laughable. Grow up, this is baseball not tinker toys. Unreal. This is why I stay off these damn boards, idiotic statements like a pitcher should be suspended for 50 games for hitting someone.

The Expos have been hitting Utley for years. Now only about 5,000 people watch Expos games, so I can't fault all you DC fans who just discovered baseball for not understanding how the game works.

A fastball to the middle of the back sent Hamels message. Harper took it like a man and went to first. Give him credit for stealing home.

Zimmerman (the one who plays) got his revenge and hit Hamels his next at bat. Hamels took it like a man and went to first. Then shut the Expos out the rest of the way.

I don't understand why everyone is bent out of shape today. it was handled on the field by both squads last night.

I wish I had read the DOUGHBOY chronicles on this topic prior to arguing w/ this complete moron Outlaw, btw u are no outlaw buddy, more like a hysterical soccer mom who takes too many pills. u wouldn't be an outlaw in a room full of cub scouts, or mormon missionaries.

point is the outlaw aka douchenozzle in this here situation is Nats GM Rizzo. Harper handled being hit like a pro, I too was surprised and proud for him. Cole shoulda realized no need for honesty, action always speaks louder than words anyway. JZimm hit Cole then, fine. Cole took his base. Handled on the field. Over. except Rizzo is an idiot.

He's no Frank Rizzo

harper already smashed bat off head and looked like a complete tool in right field today. lost ball from the crack of the bat. put up hands and shrugged as it bounced 15 feet behind him on warning track. he needs to be back in minors. sorry

listened to a few minutes of the nats game the other day. word of the street is that once morse comes back, harper goes back to minors. he has another week or two to try and dupe management into thinking he belongs {with decreasing power and a rising K rate, we all know he doesnt. see below}

First 10 games of harper's career:
AB 34
XBH 6
BB 6 (18%)
K 4 (12%)
AVG .265

Games 11-20 of harper's career:
AB 40
XBH 3
BB 3 (8%)
K 12 (30%)
AVG .200
