A Look at Mr. Brash & Cocky

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri Nov 02, 2012 9:42 am

Our personalities usually dictate how we draft.
If we're brash or cocky, we will take who we want, when we want.
If we're conservative or orderly, we will have lists and stray from them seldom.
Everybody else falls in between.
Today, we'll focus on Mr. Brash and Cocky...

The brash and cocky drafters are greedy. They prey on adp. Although knowing who 'His' players are, they still want them at the best price. If coveting Jay Bruce and Bruce has an adp of 40, Mr. Brash and Cocky has no qualms about taking Bruce in the second round. Guaranteeing Bruce on his team is better than the possible loss of Bruce in the third when his adp may come into play. Bruce is his player in the second round, not yours in the third.
Mr. B & C leans more towards Numerish. At the same time, he will not be a 'sheep'. Mr. Brash and Cocky is smarter than all writers, smarter than all experts, smarter than anyone.
He'll convince himself that writers or experts are somehow copying him, if agreeing that one of 'his' players will succeed.
Mr. Brash and Cocky KNOWS there is no 'value' picks at a draft. If a player isn't picked well past his adp and that player is not one of 'his' players, he will continue passing on that player. One of the other drafters can take him, Mr. Brash and Cocky knows that player will not have REAL value when the season begins.
Mr. B & C will read the Forecaster and tell others he didn't.
He'll go to fantasy forums.
Not for the knowledge received, but for the asking of questions in gauging if others at the Forum are as good as he is.

Mr. B and C is not averse to taking 'the next big thing'. A 10 strike out to nine inning ratio in the minors trumps a six to nine ratio in the majors.
He had Bauer on rosters last year. At the same time, he had Trout on some rosters too.
He knows that the untested come cheaper at a draft. He knows that the other drafters are not like him. He knows the risk. He knows the reward. He would rather have Profar on his roster than Peralta. He would rather have Dylan Bundy than Anibal Sanchez.
Mr. B & C knows that tiering is a suckers bet. He knows that tiering does not work. Why tier Hamilton, Holliday, and Granderson together when all have different talents?
It doesn't make sense to Mr. B &C.
Besides, in B and C's mind, Jay Bruce will be a top five pick the following year. He'll pass all these guys who other drafters have tiered in front of him.
Stupid other drafters!

Mr. B & C thinks that there are few drafters like him. If somebody else takes one of 'his' players, they were lucky. If one of 'his' players is blowing minor leaguers away, he takes pride that he is smarter than the organization that keeps the kid in the minors.
Even if that kid is promoted and his performance does not translate to the Majors.

Mr. Brash and Cocky is a splash and dash fantasy player. The Splash will be when he hits on 'his' players. In these seasons, Mr. Brash and Cocky is near the top of the standings in every league he is in. The benefit of snagging most of the same players, over and over again. He will toast himself and let everybody know just how smart he is.
At the same time, whether admitting it or not, the misses outnumber the hits. The down years outnumber the up. Consistency is out the window. He plays for number one and he could be finish at 420.
This suits him fine.
It's a lot better than being number 210 twice.
Middle of the road means no cash.
And cash is king for Mr. B and C.

Don't ask Mr. B & C who he likes. He won't tell you. If he does, it'll be amongst other players that he could give a rip about.
His players are HIS players. Not yours, not mine, HIS.
If you beat Mr. B & C, you were lucky. Lucky in that a Manager or organization held back his player or that his players got hurt at inopportune times.
Who YOU drafted is of no importance to Mr. B & C.
You were lucky.
And next year, you won't be.
His skill will make sure of that.
Just ask him.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

*He posts the winning 100K team after his main event draft
*He used to be Anonymous

I know we all know of a guy this post resembles. And I'd be lying if I said he didn't come to mind as I wrote it.
At the same time, he is not alone in his style. In fact, this style of drafting is rising. It is a little bit like the internet kids taking over the Poker Dinosaurs.
If winning, they'll hog the spotlight and trumpet their brilliance. It's an all or nothing style, and for every winner, there are five losers. Still, the thought that HE'LL be one of those five losers, never materializes.

Almost all of us fall somewhere between the two Mr. B & C's.
And like the worn out phrase from football, in any given year, one of the Mr. B & C's could come up big.
Or it could be one of us tweeners. :D

let me post something in defense of this guy and of what you write. while i thought your story was hilarious and true, i also thought that you have to have some "Mr. Bash & Cocky" in you. Now it doesnt need to be vocalized but i think there must be some level of "cockiness" in your knowledge of players and the FAAB system to win not only a league but the overall. Im sure there have been good owners who werent openly brash, but were mentally brash about their ability to not draft a closer, OF, or MI because they KNEW they had the ability to find that diamond in the rough during the season.

just my 2 cents....
