Early NFBC Draft Results
Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
Mets Management (a misnomer?) does not come off well with Dickey.
They've admonished him for climbing Kilamanjaro, instead of supporting his cause.
Then, over value him when it comes to trades, while under valuing him in terms of signing him.
He's done a lot for the Mets, including giving them the ace they never really got with the Santana signing.
The Mets could give him what he wants and tell him to keep doing what he's doing and they'll have his back 100%.
But, they don't.

Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
I am a Billy Butler fan but I am amazed at how high he is going. A DH only in this format really hurts roster flexibility and BB has issues in 2 categories. Can anyone justify this pick?
Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
I could understand you thinking that but as a met fan for nearly 40 years, and speaking to other fans, the Mets are handling this perfectly. He is already signed for next year. They don't have to trade him and they don't have to sign him yet. Why not try to get top talent for him and if it doesn't happen, you work something out with him. A 38 yr old pitcher who has never had a big contract does not want to go into next season without an extension and he is asking for 15 million per year for a 2 year extension. Why not test the market and see what happens? They are playing this very well, in my opinion and I am typically very critical of Mets management.

I did not realize he got 20 games in at 1b, for some reason I thought he had 19. Will have to adjust my rankings if he does have 1B eligibility .

I doubt that Dickey thinks the Mets Management is playing this perfectly.

Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
How should they handle it, in your opinion? Give him $30 million? Not a smart move.. When you are trying to rebuild your team. I would rather trade him and get a good young player. Dickey will get paid... one way or another. He is worthy of a decent contract. But, he is signed for another season.DOUGHBOYS wrote:The human element is missing.BK METS wrote:I could understand you thinking that but as a met fan for nearly 40 years, and speaking to other fans, the Mets are handling this perfectly. They have something good in Dickey, both on the field and off.
Treat him like a Star.
Sign him, and start building a ball club with Wright and Dickey as the foundation.

Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
The Mets have good core of young pitching (Harvey, Niese, Wheeler, Gee....) They need an entire outfield. They need a catcher. Dickey is 38 and at the height of his value... I like the guy and if they sign him, great. But he has had 1 great season and is 38 years old. The Mets are looking at all of their options. If he took the $24 million for 2 years they offered him, then they wouldn't be trying to trade him. But he didn't. Cannot blame the Mets for looking for what they can get. He is under contract for 2013, but I agree he deserves an extension and in the end, I believe the Mets will give it to him, unless they are able to get a good return for him. He is a great guy and I would love to see him back next year... but the Mets have a lot of holes in their offense.
Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
The Mets desperately want to trade Dickey but have to act like they don't to get the most value for him. Wright is the cornerstone. They can only afford one right now. Ideally, they're trying to trade him for a player who could address their weakest areas--Catcher or OF. That would be the cleanest move. Remains to be seen if they'll drop their asking price.

Agreed... Is that a Hartford Whalers logo?whale4evr wrote:The Mets desperately want to trade Dickey but have to act like they don't to get the most value for him. Wright is the cornerstone. Re: Early NFBC Draft Results
Okay, I just spent part of the day going over our first 12 NFBC drafts to see where certain players were going as I write this week's NFBC column for BaseballHQ.com and Rotowire.com. It's interesting to see how far last year's injured top stars have fallen in the last year. I mean, some have SUNK!! That means one of two things: 1) They are stars in decline with expected declining production for 2013 and beyond; or 2) They are Draft Day bargains!!
I'll post my column on Monday, but here are some interesting notes:
** Last year's Top 5 picks included Matt Kemp, Troy Tulowitzki and Jacoby Ellsbury. This year you could get them in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds to start your team. Not a bad core to start any NFBC draft, wouldn't you say? Kemp is going between 4th and 12th, while landing mainly around the 7th spot. Tulo is steadily going around 22-23. Ellsbury has been going around 30-31, but he's also gone as low as 42nd overall.
** Carl Crawford has suffered the biggest drop. A Top 30 pick earlier last year, he's going around 160th overall now. He also seems to have one of the biggest ranges of these injured stars, going anywhere from 125th overall to 183rd.
** Roy Halladay was a top SP last year who went in the Top 25 overall. Now he's going around 90th overall.
** Victor Martinez missed all of last season with a knee injury, but was a third round pick before then after hitting .330-12-103. Now fully recovered, he's going around 83rd overall.
** Mariano Rivera was the second closer going last year after Craig Kimbrel and was taken in the Top 80 overall. Now trying to return from major knee surgery at the age of 43, he's going around 140th overall. Sometimes close to a dozen closers are taken ahead of him.
All pretty interesting. I'll have more in the column, but it was fun to compare these top stars. Enjoy all and happy drafting during the holidays.
