"Mouth Musings #2"

Post by Baseball Furies » Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:34 am

So without further ado and in no particular order off the top of my head...

Somebody remind me in while we're in Vegas to tell the story of how I almost got abducted by the NJ Hare Krishnas as a result of one my college misadventures gone awry.

Image
Think that's me on the far right

Best text message I got on Valentine's Day: "Happy Valentine's Day, Sweetheart! You are going to be my bitch again this year!" From Sack Magner. Classic.

Just goes to show you that when you become a part of this NFBC community, you better be able to not only hang with some of the best players in the country, but some of the best trash-talkers, too.

Best line in a draft chat room so far that I've seen: "Hey guys, have to step away. The wife wants sex. I'll be back in three minutes...or less." Thank you, Stan Kaye for that one!

Best load of Gekko bullshit from a draft room: "I'd much rather have Adam LaRoche in the 9th round than Jay Bruce in the 3rd. Six rounds later and essentially the you're getting the same player." He did clarify the next day that he was sick with fever the night before, but only in reference to ripping on me, but no mention of the LaRoche vs. Bruce argument, however. I truly think that the more Gekko talks, the more he actually believes someone is listening to what he's saying and taking it to heart. Newbies be warned: Your barely adequate psychic defenses may be too weak for the mind-bending powers of Mark Srebro.

And this just in: The Vegas sports books have taking wagering on Gekko winning the DC overall title this year off the board as soon as he eclipsed the 50 draft entries mark. Apparently they figured that due to the law of averages and Gekko's superb skills at dodging any real competition in the high stakes, live events, he's a lock to win it all this year. This will net him a tidy sum of $10,000 less the $11,000 in entrance fees he's paying for the 73 $150 DC's he's in...and counting!

If you've had the chance to listen to Greg and Tom's new show on Sirius XM over the last couple of weeks, you got to hear the likes of Lindy Hinkelman, Jeff Dobies, and Dave Potts share some valuable insights on how they won their titles...on the other hand, you also got to hear Steve Jupinka spend 30 minutes being vague, elusive, and dodging every question posed to him only to learn absolutely nothing. :P Guess he didn't become The Champ by being loose- lipped and magnanimous.

Strange But True

 Freddie Freeman was the only full time first baseman to hit 23 homers with 90 RBI's and 90 runs scored last season. :o

 Drew Stubbs is the only over the past three seasons that has averaged 17 homers, 86 runs scored and 33 steals. The only player in 2012 to do that was...Mike Trout.

 Jose Bautista was again the leader in the Majors in AB/HR at 12.3 last season. Coming in second and third were...Brandon Moss (12.6) and Chris Carter (13.6). Betcha didn't see that one coming. I had been getting Carter and Moss as late as the high 20's in the DC's until last night when he went at 16 and 17 respectively. Guess the trade of Carter to Astros woke some people up...

 Try this one on for size: Jason Hammel for 2012: 53.2 ground ball rate, 1.89 GB/FB, 8.62 K/9
Felix Hernandez for 2012: 48.9 ground ball rate, 1.71 GB/FB, 8.65 K/9
One of these guys is worth a late teens pick where he's going wouldn't you say? Give you a hint: It aint King Felix!

Players I'm sick and f!@#ing tired of the "experts" saying that I should draft in the later rounds every year: Jeremy Guthrie, David DeJesus, Ricky Nolasco, Luke Hochevar, and Julio Borbon. These guys all have something in common...they suck and have no business in your line-up regardless of the match-up's unless you're feeling lucky one week. Well do ya? Punk!

Image

Stat of the week: Length of time before the Mets 11th overall pick in the upcoming draft that they retained for not signing Michael Bourn is called up to the Majors to make an impact if ever? Answer: Long after Sandy Alderson is fired and most likely dead and buried!

Back with Episode 3 in a few days...

i 100% stand by this...I'd much rather have Adam LaRoche in the 9th round than Jay Bruce in the 3rd. Six rounds later and essentially you're getting the same player.

same with willingham vs bruce

I got lost @ "bla, bla, bla"......, plus Hammel's numbers are for 20 starts!!!!!, good luck guessing on his good weeks...., Carter and Moss= platoon players that had career years vs opposite side......., my 2 cents...

Never Hooky! I figured it would be loved or hated, but enjoying doing them. Appreciate the feedback. :D

Good stuff, Mike. I think you and Gekko had plenty of material from that DC to choose from. My favorite Gekko quote was after the 8th, "i dont have any of mikey's players on any of my teams. that's saying something." :o He can be pretty brutal, but it's quite entertaining.

Hoping their are more MTM college days stories to come. Good work!

Hey Ty,
Thanks for the support. Gekko needs to feel that someone is giving him attention and actually cares what he has to say now and then. :P I will be including another crazy, college days story in my next installment. Here's the teaser: It has to do with a clash with the chief of the campus police department. Let's just say, it got ugly fast! :o Appreciate the input.

Nice movie reference there, Jupinka. Always nice to know that the Champ (or one of them at least) is a fan. Episode 3 is already in the works and coming this weekend. A lot of great suggestions and feedback. 8-) Thanks all.
