Shawn & Greg At LABR AL & NL Auctions

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Feb 28, 2013 6:41 am

It's that time of year again. Time for yours truly and NFBC Hall of Famer Shawn Childs to TRY to win a couple of LABR League titles against other industry writers. Can we finally do it this year?

I am the last original owner in USA Today's LABR Leagues as these date back to 1994 when the original class included Peter Gammons, Keith Olbermann, Danny Sheridan, Bill James and so many more top names. I finished 2nd in LABR AL that year -- it was the strike year, if you remember, and I was in first days before the season ended on Aug. 11 -- and last year Shawn and I finished 3rd in LABR AL, 1 point out of first place and a half point out of 2nd. We were one win away from winning this league title, which, had the Red Sox not blown Jon Lester's 3-0 lead against the Yankees on the Tuesday before the season ended we would have won it. But such is life in fantasy baseball.

We're both heading to Phoenix today to hook up before this weekend's LABR auctions. It should be a great, great time. We'll post our teams on this thread along with some dollar values from the auctions for all to see. Any advice you can give us ahead of time -- short of "take it easy on the Corona's Greg" -- would be helpful. ;) Smart asses need not apply for this job!!

I have so much snow here in Wisconsin that my 5th grade son can touch my house roof standing on the snow bank. I CAN'T WAIT to feel 80 degrees again, see sunshine again and watch baseball again. Oh, and I CAN'T WAIT to drink a beer outside without it freezing in my hands before I'm done drinking it.

We're out to accomplish one mission this weekend: WIN BOTH LABR LEAGUE TITLES!! Wish us best of luck and listen in to the broadcast of both auctions Saturday and Sunday on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio 210/87 from 7-midnight ET. See ya there.

LABR was the first high-profile fantasy sports experts league of its kind. Formed by John Hunt, the fantasy baseball columnist for USA Today Baseball Weekly, the league was first formed in 1994 and featured such celebrities as Peter Gammons, Keith Olbermann and Bill James. LABR stands for "League of Alternative Baseball Reality" and was given that nickname and the pronunciation ("labor") by Olbermann as a play on words with the labor strife in baseball at that time. Hunt ran the league and published the results of the LABR league in the Baseball Weekly's (now USA Today Sports Weekly) fantasy baseball preview issue each March from 1994 through 2006. He opted not to return for the 2007 league and was replaced with in-house staff. The dollar values players were sold for in the fantasy league are used as a benchmark for readers in their own fantasy drafts.

The LABR has lost its early status as the premier experts' league, as in 1997 a rival fantasy baseball experts league, Tout Wars, was created by Ron Shandler, who was fed up with the lack of promotion USA Today gave the LABR league.

The 2013 LABR Mixed league, AL-Only league and NL-Only league are online and can be viewed by the general public:
