Auctions

Post by ALL-IN JD » Sun Mar 31, 2013 6:27 am

Just wanted to first take the time to thank Greg and Tom for putting on two first class events in Vegas and NY. For me Vegas was great because even though I have been playing for 10 years I have never actually met Greg, or many of my competitors. Between NY and Vegas I did three Auction Championships and one Ultimate Auction. For those who have never done an Auction it is quite simply the best. A lot of strategy and most of all the entire inventory of players available to you,

Since I couldn't sleep after two weeks of intense drafting I though I would take the time this morning to ramble on a bit about the auctions in NY and Vegas. I will probably chop them up into two threads for easier reading.

My strategy i most, if not all auctions, is to spread the wealth. I almost never play the stars and scrubs strategy so I almost always spend the first 60-90 minutes sitting on my hands or taking a nap!! For the auctions this year I had a specific strategy on how to construct my teams. I was not going to spend on catching. I did want to acquire Ruiz where I could and then grab Kratz in the reserve round to play the first month. I also was going to look to draft the handful of injured players (Hanley, Grandy, Headley, Freese) if I felt I could get them at a bargain. I felt that outfielders, by far, had the deepest inventory so my plan was to be very strong up the middle and at the corners and then worry about filling up my outfield (for the most part as every draft is different. As for pitching I always try to get very high upside guys, strong k's and three closers if I can. I felt like I was able to stik to my plan in almost all of try drafts (of course the one that I did not was the Ultimate Auction where I was left with Brian Roberts at MI).

First up was the Ultimate Auction (the Grand Daddy of the Auctions). Since one of the teams played a gimmick strategy this Auction played out a little differently. I did stick to my plan and amazingly did not spend more than $17 for any one player on the team. The finished product for this team was:

C Doumit (Got him at 6)
C Ellis
1B Rizzo (Got him at 12)
2B Roberts
SS Andrus
3B Middlebrooks (Got him at 9)
MI Hardy
CI Chris Davis
OF Melky
OF Beltran
OF Aoki
OF Crawford
OF Werth
UT Belt (Goy him at 6)

P Lester
P Harvey
P Minor
P Haren
P Tehrahon
P Ogando
P Rodney
P Holland
P Hanrahan

Definitely some risk on offense with Roberts, Crawford and Werth. I love the upside of the pitching staff and was able to secure three pretty good closers. And once again, did not spend more than $17 for any one player.

Next draft was my first team in the Auction Championship. Went in with the same strategy obviously and kept to the plan again staying mostly quiet for the first 60-90 minutes. I did let my hair down in this one and paid $23 for a player (Kris Medlen) :-)

C Ruiz (paid 5 and got Kratz in the reserves
C Martin
1B Rizzo
2B Kipnis
SS Asdrubal
3B Freese (got Freese at 5 and rostered Nelson for the first few weeks)
MI Rutledge
CI Hosmer (got at 13)
OF Rios
OF Melky
OF Beltran
OF Crawford
OF Aoki
UT Granderson (got at 11 and rostered Reimold/Parmalee for the first month)

p Medlen
P Kuroda
P Lynn
P Haren
P Bailey
P Ogando
P Hanrahan
P Balfour
P Perkins

I will be fighting from behind a bit at the beginning with Ruiz, Freese and Granderson all sidelined. I also think the staff has some risk as I need Haren to bounce back and for Bailey and Lynn to step forward. The staff does have pretty nice upside and once again I was able to get three closers.

Will be back in a bit to move to the New York Auctions.

Equal sentiments about the live draft experience from me...I was only in NY tho.I drafted three auctions......one partnering with Dobies...one solo....and one with Edelman, Also facilitated the mains saturday which also is still alot of fun to me(Sack likes to call me sticker boy...whatever bud:))

Thursday night auction...I ended up with a plan not to spend more than 25 a player..but thought I got good buys on Reyes and jUpton under 30 so I got them. Funniest moment of the night was me and another Phillies fan fighting over Dom Brown and he finally won at $13.

This is my team..I like it..but I regret not spending an extra few bucks to get Jon Lester to add to my staff.

C Doumit
C Ellis
1B Freeman
2B Infante
SS Reyes
3B Middlebrooks
CI Youk
MI Simmons(love him this year)
U A.Soriano(my last player with my last 8 bucks)
OF J.Upton
OF Swisher
OF Beltran
OF Bonafacio
OF Maybin

P Dickey($17)
P Morrow
P Fister
P Kuroda
P Beckett
P Burnett
P C.Perez
P Hanrahan
P Betancourt

Bench of M.Ellis,Yuni Escobar, Delmon Young, Kyle Kendrick, Ricky Nolasco, Vinnie Pestano and Trevor Rosenthal

SS Reyes
3B Machado
CI Howard
MI Segura
U Konerko
OF Heyward
OF Cruz
OF Beltran
OF Bonafacio
OF Vernon Wells(have Logan Morrison as well but out awhile)

P Worley
P League

last time i drafted was the 1300 auction which had me against dobies in same league..we know each other well so it was interesting and i felt like i had to deviate some from my usual plan knowing that he knew what i was likely to do and vice versa.....we even had a little bidding war over aj ellis of all people which was funny.

Incredible Hulking Edelman teamed with me on this one but he was busy drafting in the MtM super so I handled it solo....with alot of his input before hand. If we can get the SP upside to pan out..I like this team alot too. I was trying really hard to get a 1 dollar catcher and I ended up with 25 game catcher kratz where if i waited a lil longer..probably coulda got ramos or hundley instead....so that part was no good..but otherwise happy

Hey Andy. Great to see you, Jason, gecko and everyone else. Has become quite the tradition. Loved sitting next to Gecko in the 1300. Felt like he and I were on the same page this year, so lots of back and forth over players.

Great ny location this year. This should become the goto place imho. Maybe have the two drafts in the separated so we can keep dovider open, then do a quick clean and turn of the other room between drafts. I would help. Both auctioneers were great this year on my Friday auction leagues.

Well done in the drafts. Allin JD I have to admit I am more of of a stars and scrubs guy I have tried both all average players and just didn't work for me. Having said that I went big on risky players this year. I will either end up at the top or bottom this year. Especially my 800 team with players like McCann Ortiz granderson etc...

Andy, Am on my iPhone so no ability to easily enter my teams but would appreciate your thoughts. For your 1300 team I am Lukewarm. Love players like Howard to rock their auction value but c outfield and pitching have a ton of question marks... Clearly it is critical that Beltran and worly come through for you!!!!!! And I personally think Beltran is going down this year with health issues but we will see.

good to see you too Chris!

yeah i am high on beltran but injuries a concern. he did wonders for us last year in the team that jeff/I won.

pitching wise...we have quantity..just want a few to become quality:) out of happ, norris, worley, porcello

feel pretty good about moore, medlen, morrow, holland, maholm at top of rotation

funniest part of the drafts friday chris was when the hotel guy messing with the seperator doors between drafts yelled at you for asking to keep them open.

Enjoyed meeting you in Vegas JD. I'm also a fan of the auctions and would rather do them than snake drafts.

Team 1, Friday 1600 hrs: (OF focus)
C - Castillo (2)/Castro (1)
1B/CI - CDavis (12)/Belt (8)
2B - Utley (13)
3B - Chisenhall (4)
SS/MI - Reyes (31)/JPeralta (1)
OF/UT - McCutchen (31)/JUpton (29)/CGonzalez (29)/Bourjos (2)/Joyce (1)/Francouer (1)
SP - Price (28)/Medlen (18)/Dickey (16)/Josh Johnson (12)/Straily (3)/Worley (1)/Miguel Gonzalez (1)
RP - Street (8)/GHolland (8)
Reserve - Puig/MIzutris/Masterson/Donaldson/Harrell/Snider/Loney

Stayed on my plan for the most part. Got into a small bid war late for Chisenhall with Lindy. Reyes wasn't part of the plan...was supposed to be Adam Jones but I couldn't resist chasing Reyes when he came out.

Team 2, Sunday 1000 hrs: (stars and scrubs with power focus)
C - Ianetta (4)/Hanigan (1)
IB/CI - Encarnacion (25)/Colvin (2) - Didn't foresee Colvin getting sent down...that hurts
2B/MI - RWeeks (16)/Beckham (1)
3B - Beltre (28)
SS - Profar (2)
OF/UT - Trout (42)/Stanton (29)/ISuzuki (11)/Kubel (3)/Crisp (8)/Ross (1)
SP - Weaver (23)/GGonzalez (23)/Morrow (15)/SMiller (5)/Milone (4)/Griffin (4)
RP - Janssen (7)/Rondon (5)/Madson (1)
Reserve - Nolasco/Yelich/Miguel Gonzalez/Joyce/Dozier/Arroyo/KHerrera

Rondon and Colvin getting sent down, and Ross and Madson on DL means my bench gets used early and I'll be waiting on saves to develop. Paid more than planned for RWeeks who I targeted and that hurt me late when I needed the dollar to one-up a $1 catcher.

I also love the auction format; we are each in control of our destiny.
C: AJ Ellis (2), Buck (1)
1B/CI/UT: Freeman (27), Butler (25), Lind (30
2B: Walker (10)
3B: Middlebrooks (12)
SS/MI: Desmond (23), Simmons (10) (like Andy, I really love him)
OF: Adam Jones (26), A. Jackson (19), Crawford (13), Fowler (6), Colvin (3)

SP: Gio (22), Gallardo (17), Anibal Sanchez (12), Ryu (3), Marcum (3), Norris (2), Smyly (7) (my last buy with rest of money)
RP: E. Frieri (5), Axford (10)

Reserve: Ludwick, Tillman, Hochevar, Broxton, Barney, Chris Johnson, Juan Rivera

Like Dan, some injuries and cuts, Juan, thought he would play and last pick, oh well; surprised Colvin was sent down; Ludwick sitting there in reserve sure helps; Broxton could end up with saves; Marcum hurt;

This is why we play, who best used faab will come out on top;

My injury riddled auction team from Chicago. Definitely, was not my plan, but I just couldn't help myself. This is after the first FAAB period run tonight . It was a lot worse before FAAB. I didn't include the $ amount, didn't see the point.

C) RDoumit(of), JCastro
CM) ACraig(of), GJones(of), KSeager, MAdams, MTeixeira
MI) IKinsler, BZobrist(of), DJeter, CPennington
OF) MTrout, CGranderson, ISuzuki, JJay, DStubbs, MBrantley, SSmith, OTaveras
SP) CLee, JZimmerman, CBuchholz, TMilone, DStraily, MBuehrle, BBeachy
RP) CKimbrel, JMotte, DHernandez, KHerrera

I had a great time in Chicago at the auction. It was a treat sitting next to George Puhl and his wife. She actually remembered my wife being there two years ago. Meeting a few new guys and reminiscing with the old standard is and will always be the best part of the live drafts. I've done a few live NFBC and NFFC events with Jack Haan, but from now on he will be remembered as "oxymoronic" Angel Pagan. I promise, I almost fell out of my chair.

MY team has absolutely no chance, but I'll work at it and try to make a better showing than my beloved Wildcats did this year. Gotta work the wire for some "pop" and a couple SP's. Irregardless, good luck to all.

I did the Chicago Auction with John Pausma. I listened to my accent-laden buddy Bill Cleavenger ("uky" above) and only made fun of him a couple times. :) It was good to see old auction friends. We had a great time.

I've learned my lesson over the years - let John bid. I'm impulsive, impatient and love to spend. I don't know how you patient guys do it. So this year I tracked everyone's team, watched for bargains, and offered thoughts as we went along. Here is our team:

C - Mauer - 19
C - J. Montero - 10
1B - Berkman - 11
2B - Weeks - 12
SS - Rollins - 16
3B - M. Cabrera - 42
CI - Middlebrooks - 11
MI - E. Nunez - 1
OF - Cespedes - 28
OF - A. Gordon - 18
OF - Ethier - 8
OF - Bonifacio - 7
OF - Dirks - 1
UT - Carpenter - 3

Res - J. Bradley, C. Ross

SP - Price - 28
SP - Bumgarner - 22
SP - S. Miller - 6
SP - Phelps - 3
SP - Fiers - 1
SP - Marcum - 1
SP - Hanson - 1
RP - A. Reed - 10
RP - Santos - 1

Res - Corbin, Leake, Coke, Villanueva, Valverde

Our hitting is very good, and will have to carry us. We are short a few SP and will have to work the waiver wires. There was alot of money left in the draft when SP 3 - 5 were being bid on and we did not have alot of $ left. Same for closers.

The nicest thing Jack has ever called me is "accent-laden". I'm not sure about the "buddy" remark either :o.

We need to have a draft in the south, then see who is "accent-laden". :D

I only took part in one auction this year, the Ultimate Auction, and had an absolute blast. It truly is the best and most enjoyable format hands down. Next year, I'll definitely be adding an auction or two, possibly the NYC $1300 and maybe a return to the AL Auction.

For this year, the following is the auction team I'll be rolling with.....

C- Ryan Doumit - 8
C- Wellington Castillo - 1
1B - Edwin Encarnacion - 28
3B - Ryan Zimmerman - 24
CI - Cory Hart - 5
2B - Aaron Hill - 19
MI - Ben Zobrist - 17
SS - Ian Desmond - 20
OF - Jay Bruce - 19
OF - Melky Cabrera - 11
OF - Alex Rios - 15
OF - Peter Bourjos - 4
OF - Will Venable - 1
UT - Gerardo Parra - 1

P - Yu Darvish - 27
P - Kris Medlen - 22
P - Trevor Cahill - 7
P - Brett Myers - 2
P - Shelby Miller - 7
P - Jason Hammel - 2
P - Phil Hughes - 1
RP - Jason Grilli - 9
RP - Addison Reed - 10

Reserves - Chris Tillman, Chris Capuano (dropped today), Adam Eaton (Parra handcuff), Josh Donaldson, Zack Wheeler, Francisco Liriano, Erik Bedard

Tough auction with a couple really interesting strategies by some pretty adept auction players. I tried to just go with a balanced approach. We'll see how it works out.

Jay Bruce at 19. What a buy. In NY Bruce has a high inflation rate. I believe he was going around 25 in the NY auctions. Nice balanced roster.

Glenn, I think you got a steal on Zobrist. I had to pay $23 for him in my NY auction league. I know that the dynamics of each auction is different but that is still a great price for him. I think his 2B/SS/OF positional versatility is invaluable in a non-trading league like the NFBC. Good luck to you this year. :D

Thanks Jason. The bidding on Bruce did seem to stop early and I felt fortunate to grab him at that price as I was looking for a power bat to anchor my OF. I think the savings allowed me to buy Rios a little later in the draft.

Still, pricing on hitting was typically a little light in this auction as many of the bidders seemed to be pushing mid-tier starters to higher than typical prices. One of the things I love about auctions is that each one takes on a life of its own. You really need to be flexible in an auction and roll with the flow. It's truly a great format.

I missed you in NYC this year Jason. Catch you next season. Good luck with all your teams this one.

Hey Rich, as I stated in my response to Jason, hitting prices were a little light in this draft. I did like getting Zobrist as one of the pieces to my infield as I did want to be strong there.

As far as your team, I'm far from an auction expert and still feel very much like a novice in this format, no matter how much I enjoy it. I think there are much better players in this format to evaluate how you did. However, as far as the team itself, I did check out your thread and think you have a contender there. Very nicely done Rich.

It was great seeing you in NYC again this year. Good luck with all your teams, I'm sure you'll do great.
