My World of Fantasy Baseball

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sat Apr 27, 2013 10:32 am

If I were the God of fantasy baseball.....

I would disallow trading in all leagues. Trading leads to stupid e-mails, from stupid people, who think that you are stupider than they are.

I would disallow any leagues not totaling at least 12 teams. Anything less than 12 teams is like doing the 'Weekly Reader' crossword puzzle and proclaiming yourself Einstein.
"I can't believe Tulo got hurt!" "Crap" "Now I'm going to lose this league for sure!"
Guess I'll have to settle for Asdrubal Cabrera!"

I would incorporate KJ Duke's ranking's as not only the official NFBC rankings, but as the official world rankings.
Two reasons:
The best fantasy players in the world are right here.
Those that THINK they are the best are either more comfortable for lesser money (no balls syndrome) or they write about fantasy baseball.

For these rankings, a standardization would have to take place. If winning local, Yahoo, ESPN or CBS leagues, you would gain a sort of street cred and maybe win money with the thought of joining the NFBC Main Event.

Greg and Tom would be the King and....king of fantasy baseball. All major decisions would have to go through them. They would be manned with a 24 hour on the clock IT team whose only mission in life is to make the fantasy player happy.

Ron Shandler would have to define what a 'Real Expert is....

Todd Zola would be the czar of Numerish. Working out of the basement of his sister's home, all numbers used by other writers to back up arguments would have to be approved by the czar.
Upon this promotion, Todd is summarily demoted from Lord to Czar.....at least I think that is a demotion.

All MLB players would have to have a fantasy team. They would be required to have themself and at least one real life teammate on that team.
This would prompt this sort of dialogue:

Ellsbury:
Dammit Pedey! Grounding a ball to the right side to get me from 2nd to 3rd?
What was that?
You give yourself an 0-1 and don't even allow me the time to steal 3rd myself!

Pedroia:
Whatever! This coming from the guy who stops at 3rd on my double. I hit a laser to left center and one of the fastest guys in baseball can't score? YOUR KILLING ME!

Pedroia:
Hey Youk! Get your fat ass off the bench, you freakin' sissy!
I don't know why, but you're on my team, you big pussy. The only thing you've proved so far is that even as a Yankee, you're a pussy!

Youkilis:
I benched myself. I felt this shoulder thing coming on, so I'm alright.

Pedroia:
I thought it was your neck?

Youkilis:
Oh yeah, neck thing.
I drafted Bradley Jr. Any chance he comes back?

Pedroia:
Yeah.
When pitchers start throwing 10 miles less an hour and have less break on breaking balls, like spring training, he'll be back.
BUT, at least he tries, so get your ass off the bench and get back in the game.

Youkilis:
Call me every Monday and Friday. I'll let you know if I'm benching myself. Sometimes I don't even know till right before the deadline.

FAAB deadlines, which would be uniform for all leagues would be deadlined at 9pm, est.
With results known at 9:05, est.

There would be scorekeeping changes.
For instance, Josh Beckett leaves the game with the bases loaded.
If League comes in and gets out of the jam with no runs scored, nothing changes.
If however, League gives up a grand slam, the following result would occur.
Beckett would be charged with:
3/4 of a run for the man on third
1/2 of a run for the man on second
1/4 of a run for the man on first
Totaling one and 1/2 runs instead of three as it is now.
League would be charged for the other one and 1/2 runs, plus the batter that hit the grand slam.

There are other things, but this is getting long and I always fear that boredom has set in for those reading.
So there you have it. Fantasy Baseball in a new world.
If you like it...fine.
If not....hey, it's my world, get out :D

Mr. Fantasy God, please allow me to inject some perspective into your fantasy world. Please take no offense, this is simply a warped, over indulged Bud light point of view.

Thank you for acknowledging a format other than the 15 team "Main Event" that only the "Best players in the world" compete in. Although a bit half hearted the effort was there by mentioning "At least 12 team events". The 12 team events are the most popular played on all sites including this one.

I have never seen KJ's official World Rankings but I suspect they're only derived from 15 team main event leagues. Where does last years main event champ rank in the "World Rankings"? I suspect these are lifetime rankings (although I'm sure I'll be corrected if not) and don't give enough credit to the best players right now. Are these lifetime rankings or based on current form? Last years main event winner should be top 5 no matter what. Golf weeds out the dinosaurs in their rankings as time goes on.

Mr. Fantasy God you need to jump into the most popular fantasy baseball format next year. It takes a different skill set and perspective on the game to compete. A main event champion stated on these boards that both formats present different challenges and neither is better than the other, they're just different.

I hope one day you want to be the "God" of all fantasy baseball. You're already a God to me with all of your writings. It's time to get on board the XII train!! 8-) It will be a main event of its own next year as the masses that compete in the rotowire event come on board.

I've rambled enough, not sure how long I'll leave this up. Maybe another bud light or two :D

You underestimate my methodology, Joe. They are lifetime rankings with progressive value to more recent seasons. Secondly, I disagree completely that winning the overall automatically puts you in the top 5. One great team with a heavy dose of luck along with obvious skill does not automatically overwhelm years of experience/consistency/success.

Your 12-teamer argument has some validity, and I've considered trying to incorporate those results, but the tougher competition in terms of having to know and manage a deeper set of players makes the 15-teamer the best evaluator for ranking the world's "best" players. Great response KJ, I'll check out your rankings. I think the two formats have unique challenges that need to be managed. Those that have played the 15 team format are stuck believing it's the toughest. In the 12 team format the toughest in season decisions are made. Do I drop Jesus Montero? ;) That's never a decision in the 15 team format, so to me, those in season, difficult decisions make the two formats distinctly different.

Just one example. I love your passion for the game.

No doubt Joe, winning the 12's isn't easy by any stretch - it's easier to fill holes but a lot of decisions to be made. The best XII players over time certainly deserve recognition too.

Ya, I guess the point I was trying to make was, that in the 12 team event you manage tough decisions all season long. In the 15 team event, you're not faced with as many decisions because they're no alternatives. I enjoy managing the tough calls and love rolling the dice sometimes. I just don't see it in the 15 team event. The decisions are more cut and dried.

Both formats are awesome. I'd love to win either one.

KJ, didn't you once have a "High Stakes" rankings? It included winning Ultimates, Supers, other events in other contests. Whatever happened to those rankings? You could incorporate those who do well in the XII in those rankings as well (of course prorated at 80% value for 80% of the amount of teams per league of course :)).

Granted, that would create a bit more work for you. I'm sure Joe wouldn't mind though. ;)

A bit more work! :| The toughest part is dealing with all the co-mgrs and partnerships. I decided to do one ranking list and make it the best I could rather than try to juggle a bunch of them, so I went with what I thought was the most inclusive and indicative - the 15 team mains.

Tonight was the first time I saw KJ's blog. I think its awesome. It looks to be a true lifetime rating system. How cool is it that he took the time to do it?

Those are lifetime rankings. Maybe the NFBC comes up with a system to rate the current environment. Something similar to golf. It would be fun and give many of us something to strive for. I'll never rate in the 15 team game and have only had a smidgen of success in the 12 team event, so it's really not self serving here. Just fun stuff to look at.

Heck the guys that intimadate me most are down the list a ways ;)

Joe, Fantasy God spared the 12 team leagues. It is the 'less than 12' leagues that he did away with.
12 league teams are very viable.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, Fantasy God has spoken! :D

Joe,
Through Roger Martin, I am participating in a 12 teamer this year and thoroughly enjoying it.
It may even become an annual thing.
I love the golfing rating idea. Although golfers around the world can be the Kings of their own course and have dreams about competing with the big boys, they should get recognition for winning the lesser leagues they enter.

KJ put a lot of work into his standings and to me, they are official. In the early years, Krause and Fanball attempted rankings, then they just sort of fell by the wayside over time. It's a tough thing to do since the NFBC has become so diversified. Not only with 12 teamers and even disgusting 10 teamers  , but with the many kinds of Championships one can enter currently.
The Main Event has been the one constant.

Haha. Spot-on. So true regarding trading leagues and the stupid emails and stupid volume-of-scrubs-for- studs-offers! Once I started playing the NFBC I quit all neighborhood leagues for this reason as well as mish-mash rules and bad trades that tip the balance of power in season.

Is anyone else as annoyed by the FAAB deadline, right around dinner time and the end of the afternoon games on Sundays? Would loooove to have Sunday evening during the Sunday Night game to put my bids in and analyze match-ups for the upcoming week. I always feel so rushed and then I can't concentrate until I see my who I won. That 30 minute wait from deadline until we see our gifts is agonizing. I would love a 10:00 PM EST deadline or at least 9:00 PM EST. Not sure if anyone else feels that way. And why the 30 minutes for the FAAB reveal?
