Brandon Watson, SB stud or dud?

Post by Return of the Aces » Sun Apr 02, 2006 12:42 pm

I rolled the dice and took a chance this week on Brandon Watson, paying $126 on waivers, with the next highest bidder at $89. With Church in AAA, and Byrd on the roster, will Watson warrant and get the playing time he needs to steal 30 this season? I am hoping for something close to 2005 Willy Taveras numbers, but I would be happy with .270 2 hrs 30 rbis 80r 23 sbs.

Red Sox Nation (great screen name by the way!): Are you sure that Brandon Watson wasn't taken in the draft? He was drafted in NY2 in the 30th round.

RSN,

Watson was drafted in 19 of the leagues (#33 LF on draft stats), which may account for him not being available on waivers in some leagues.

According to STATS, he will still be available in LV 2 next week via free agency.

RSN, I think what happened in your situation was that you were logged into your Ultimate Draft League when you called STATS and thus couldn't find him via free agency because he was already drafted. You needed to check your free agent list in LV 2 to find Watson there. Hope this helps.

Watson was available in every league that he wasn't originally drafted in, just to clarify things. We can't make free agents available in some leagues and not others.
Ultimate 1: When you do a player search ion STATS for watson matt watson from Oak is the only player that comes up. I'm not sure why you can't search for him but this is why i assumed no one had him and that he should have been a FA. He didn't show up in the player search or on the waiver wire. Now that i went through every team i noticed he was taken. Can STATS make sure every player can be searched? Sorry about the mistake but unless I knew every player on every team he was un-searchable for some reason.

Hey Msamuels,

We took him for $ 61 in a satellite league last week

Why ? Probably stupidity. But

He's the only real CF on the team. DC has a huge outfield

He's hit very well at every level of the minors and steals bases

and the 2 guys that were in front of him are not good fielding CFers, not good leadoff hitters, and both have wasted multiple opportunities. If Church wanted it he might have decided to hit above .200 this spring. It's not like Church is a proven vet who has earned a pass...the opposite if anything

Watson deserved it. He was over .300 in spring with 7 steals in 8 attempts with good fielding. Doesn't mean he won't waste the opportunity, but I'm hopeful for some success

He wasn't that expensive....

so it wasn't much of a risk

Steals and Saves.....usually a premium must be paid
I know. Usually rather than scanning all the teams I just type the players name in player search and they should come up whethere or not they are on a team or available. In this case Watson does not show. Whatever! It's over

RSN: I have the same problem using the "search" on my team page. If you type in "Watson", Matt Watson comes up. If you type in "Wat", both Matt and Brandon show up.

I hope this helps?...

That is exactly it. Sometimes you must type only two letters. In this case simply type wa. It probably should work either way, but it does not, for some reason.
That would be disappointing. I could see a shortfall in overall production, but I would hope for an uptick in SBs (30+) to justify keeping Watson in my lineup.

I took Watson at the end of my main league (NL-only auction). What a dog he's been so far. I wasn't expecting great hitting but I thought he'd hit enough to steal 20 bases or so. I can't imagine him keeping the starting job much longer at the rate he's going.
