Well, you mentioned a hint that this guy played in the 60's, so if it isn't Tim McCarver  , it has to be Elston Howard

No, I love Smoky Burgess, but he is not Hall worthy.

No, number two went strictly by his nickname and is in the Hall of Fame.

I tried to think of a way to get Howard on the list, but failed.
Excellent guess. The fella I'm thinking of did play in the A.L. and came along a little after Howard.

No. Munson only had 113 career homers.

Another hint on extra credit one.
He finished second, behind Denny McLain, in MVP voting, and was an All Star 10 consecutive years.

If Bill Freehan or Ted Simmons had had their career for the Yankees or another large market team, there is no question they would be in the Hall of Fame.

I 100% agree with you on Simmons. He was also a “victim” of having played in the same league at the exact same time as Johnny Bench.

As for Freehan, I just don’t have that many personal memories of him. He was in the American League. I was an NL guy. It’s almost as simple as that (plus he was a little ahead of my time :D ). I know that here in Chicago we had a greater opportunity than most did to be exposed to players of both leagues, but like most baseball fans at the time, you were a fan of one league or the other, and my league was the NL.

Freehan was wonderful to watch. The leader of that team, even with McLain, Kaline, etc.
Freehan's numbers are depressed because he played during the pitcher's era and he would not let broken bones or common injuries now, get in his way in starting a game.
Stats-wise, Simmons has it all over Freehan, both deserve to be in the Hall. Another Hall failure, in that it's sometimes not 'how' you play, but 'where' you play.

Shhhh, don't tell anyone though. I don't want the Cubs to take away my lifetime membership in the 'bang your head against a brick wall' fan-club :D :o

I haven't been around much in the past week Dan. I like doing these. Just happened to look in and saw what was left :D

Willie Horton had his best year in 68 also. I think he might have been right there in the voting as well.
