A few weeks ago, I wrote that my time on these Boards might be limited. It was a rough time for me. Friends that I have known for years passed away and another friend who I may even consider my best friend got a diagnosis of cancer.
My first thought was to drop everything. My friend would need me. So, I got my schedule cleared, wrote that post, and went to visit and help my friend.
He made me realize that there was nothing I could do. I thought I could do something.
Something.
But, I was like him, helpless.
We can't be more than a best friend to somebody. To try and do so would border on pestering or stalking.
All we can do is be there when we're needed.
Since then, he has had surgeries, and so far, the news is good.
And, if you've noticed, if anything, I've been on these Boards even more since writing that post.
For me, it's therapy.
It takes my mind off real life.
And as anybody who has lived a real life knows, real life can sometimes suck.
I want to thank those of you who e-mailed and PM'ed after that post. It was kind of you to inquire.
I didn't mean to alarm as much as give a heads up, but it turns out the heads up wasn't needed.
I'll be here as long I enjoy what I'm doing. And I enjoy doing this.
And besides, this therapy is free.

I missed that e-mail. Sorry but I wouldn't have paid attention anyway. Let's get back to PED's. Remember a book called Ball Four? Remember how many future Hall of Famer's were doing speed?

I do indeed, John.
Remember how pissed off Bowie Kuhn was at Jim Bouton for writing that book?
As mad as I've ever seen a Commish at one player.
Greenies were the rage then. Before that, it was coffee and caffeine boosts. Anything to get an edge.

Dough - I read that post too and was dissappointed you might be writing less, but, as you said, you still are and a lot of us appeciate it. The you weave Baseball into real life is tryuly special. Insight most of us do not have, or at least cannot artuculate you do. Your posts are must read stuff for me every day. I learn from them!!!

Dan,
Sorry for the loss of your friend and I am glad the news is good so far for your other friend. We will keep them and their families (and you) in our prayers.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
