Who Am I? NFBC Version

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Aug 14, 2013 12:02 pm

This may be too easy. After all, the NFBC is only 10 years old.
Ah well, an easy crossword makes us feel better after not solving a hard one....

1. 12
2. 89278769280
3. Q
4. Another team on my Blackberry!
5. Biogenesis
6. Doritos
7. Inventory
8. (Until a month ago) Braun should be number 1!
9. Greed is Good
10. Seaver
11. Contract League
12. I quit!
13. Mouth
14. Pigs
15. Guitar
16. Pizza
17. Golly! Gee! Wow!
18. Ssssssss (Yes, he played in the NFBC one year)
19. Georgia Peach
20. Bro's

Extra Credit-

21. E
Most of these, as said will be really easy. Some, if not being with the NFBC long enough could prove to be a little tougher.
Have fun with it!

Dan, I have a request that, hopefully, would be of interest to others in addition to myself. While I've been playing fantasy baseball for some time, this only is my second year competing in the NFBC. Here, I am a relative newbie without much knowledge of what came before. While I knew a few of the clues from contests and, primarily, the message boards, most I could not guess. It would be very interesting to me, and maybe others, if you could give a brief explanatory blurb next to the answers. It would help some of us learn a little more of the NFBC's history and some of the more high profile personalities. Thanks!

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Re: Who Am I? NFBC Version

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Aug 15, 2013 10:06 am

Ok, let's have an explanation of the NFBC Who Am I, for those that are newer to the NFBC......

1. Money- Joe Berg is in love with the 12 team concept. Most everybody else in the NFBC prefers or enjoys the 15 team race. Joe fights a never-ending battle for 12 team equality in the NFBC.

2. ToddZ- Lord Zola, in my estimation, is the King of Numerish. A language made up for 'Fantasy Camp' in which only he and few others speak fluently. During the off season, to enjoy the Numerish along with Todd's wit, dial up Mastersball.com on your internet.

3. Steve Jupinka- A member of the NFBC Hall of Fame who goes by the name 'Quahogs'. Most people don't know what a Quahogs is, so it was shortened to Q by those who address him. Q and GlennerationX are two of the best with appropriate pictures.
Q hasn't been around as much this summer and is missed.

4. Greg Ambrosius- Our fearless leader. In the old days, every team that signed up to the NFBC was like finding a nugget in a gold mine for Greg. 'Another team on the blackberry' would be announced to all. Now, it is taken for granted that we'll have plenty of teams. Greg has taken us to the brink of the NFBC being snatched by evil Fanball (an overstatement) and dying thereafter to what it is now, a well run machine.

5. Mike McCoy- Outlaw has become the NFBC source for anything PEDS. Others have poo-poo'ed Mike, but most everything written turns out to be correct. There are volumes and volumes of documents concerning PEDS. There are also volumes and volumes of Mike's opinion's in threads on these message boards.

6. DOUGHBOYS- I love Doritos. Mark Bendar gave me a bag at the Main Event. Yummmmm.

7. Shawn Childs- Shawn used the NFBC to become a nationally known fantasy 'expert'. His use of the word 'judy' remains today and is part of our lexicon for stolen base artists with little power.
Shawn likes to show that he can use more than two syllable words, so 'inventory' became another word for available player.
Shawn is also in the NFBC Hall of Fame, but is far too busy with his 'expert' life to contribute here much.
I kid because I care, Shawn. :D

8. Tom Kessenich- Greg's partner in crime.
Tom has had a mancrush on Ryan Braun through the years, even being disappointed that Braun wasn't the NFBC #1 ADP player even after Biogenesis news.
Of course, Tom didn't have as much money on the outcome of Biogenesis as his customers. :D

9. Gekko- Mark Srebro has changed over the years. He used to be the King of these boards. And if disagreeing with Mark, you'd better have good reasoning because he'll find a weakness in your defense and exploit it.
Mark will do anything to win at any fantasy sport. He has won the NFFC overall on the Dark Side and I believe he finished third one year in the NFBC overall.
He also cashed in 12 of 13 leagues one year. Still, a monument of excellence in the NFBC.
You'll see Mark's teams in Draft Champions Leagues under girl's names. You can't miss them. He hardly missed a league this year.
Like Q, Gekko has not posted anything this summer. I miss him.

10. Glenneration X- Glenn is a Mets fan, but we try not to keep that against him. He loves and respects Tom Seaver and stayed a Mets fan even after the Mets traded Seaver. I don't get that, but to each their own :D
Glenn is one of the good guys in the NFBC. Always putting a light touch on most posts. And his pictures are sometimes hilarious. I always look forward to a Glenneration X post.
By the way, he's shorter in person than you'd expect. :D

11. KJ Duke- Kevin is a mastermind. Inspector Gadget with technology as well. He initiated the 'Contract Leagues' and to any newbie who is looking for a fantasy experience that can't be compared to others, join a contract league. You'll love it.
Kevin was the force behind NFBC Draft Championship Leagues or 'slow drafts'.
He is one of the persons I hate most seeing at my draft table, because fantasy-wise, we think so much alike. And, of course, he is kicking my ass in a Main Event League at the moment.

12. Walla Walla- John Crane. I love John Crane. He's as real as his posts. He's a surly sombitch who says what he means and loves it when it riles others. He has gotten under the skin of almost every NFBC patron in the past. But, after threatening to quit for several years, he actually did. I get occasional PM's from John.
I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again for new folks.....
In 2006, I was in a Main Event draft with John in Vegas. At the time, I wasn't on the Boards much, but John was and most of his stuff then were shots at Greg, the NFBC, or anybody else John could rile. The NFBC then was a little like the Cleavers and John was Eddie Haskell.
Anyway, during the first break, I got behind John at a sandwich buffet place and introduced myself. He turned and uttered, "Harumpph"
I've never heard an actual 'Harumpph' in real life. Only in books. I had no comeback. Nothing to say.
I went back to my table, started looking at players to draft. Then, couldn't stop laughing, you know, on the inside.
I looked across the table at John gorging himself on a sandwich and thought, "How perfect was that!"

13. Mike Massotto or 'The Mouth'- Mike burst on the scene a couple of years ago. His outside is as hard as a buick, his insides like soft corinthian leather. Mike is a work out freak who abhors the idea of me eating McBites and Doritos.
He is the best draft facillatator I know. If I start a 'fast draft' I know that Mike will want to be in them because he loves them and loves the pace. And so do the folks in the draft.
Mike likes to come across as a tough guy, those that have gotten to know him, know better.
He also hasn't posted for awhile and is missed.

14. Lindy Hinkelman- NFBC hall of Famer and has won more money at this hobby than any man has a right to. Lindy is a mild mannered guy who takes winning in stride. He is a credit to the NFBC and everybody loves having him in the NFBC, as long he is not at their table.
Lindy has gotten national headlines for being a pig farmer/fantasy winner. Which is a lot better than being a
Pig Winner/Fantasy Farmer

15. Dave Potts is last years winner of the NFBC Overall. Dave carries a guitar and goes on tour. You can see some of his stuff on Youtube. At least in the past when I checked, I would hope it's still there.
Dave is quiet but carries a big NFBC stick.

16. Rick Thomas. An NFBC stalwart. It seems that Rick is at or near the top of every league he plays in. Another player you don't want at your table.
Rick owns a gourmet pizza place in a small eastern state. He told me at the Main Event that he was so engrossed with his business that he hardly has time for fantasy.
Warning- Beware of the man at your table who says that he is so engrossed in his business that he hardly has time for fantasy.

17. Winston's Empire. Max is a ray of sunshine. I may remember this wrong, but I think Max came to the NFBC during one of it's lowest points. It could have been present day Fanball or post-fanball. I don't know for sure.
But his posts, which reflected the excitement and enthusiasm of a young kid going to his first ball game were so needed at that time. It made all of us think why we were playing this silly game. We weren't playing to bitch about Fanball or technology improvements or whatever was going bad that day.
Max's "Gee, Golly" posts were refreshing and made us realize why we're all here.

18. Sssss Glenn- I don't remember his last name. I don't care to. He played in the NFFC for years. The NFBC for one. I believe he is the only person thrown off the NFFC/NFBC message boards. I found him to be a self absorbed, narcissistic, selfish sombitch.
Others thought less of him.
He would end his posts with an Sssss and called himself 'Snake'.
Yuck.

19. Wayne Edwards- After years and years of wanting to meet Wayne, it finally happened this past draft in Vegas.
Great guy.
If I think of anybody as the 'Welcome Wagon' for the NFBC, it is Wayne. Wayne likes to have a humorous twist in all of his posts and his sense of humor is genuine.
A treat.

20. Joe and David Anthony- What a pair of brothers. There is no doubt that these two would take a bullet for the other.
Joe is the 'more adult' :D of the two. He has a great fantasy sense about him and is one of the most under appreciated owners in the NFBC. His player evaluement (shuddup spellchecker, damn you!) skills is one of the best.
David is a fun loving guy who says what he means and means what he says.
Well, most of the time :D
I think Dave likes the daily games more than seasonal now.
Both haven't said much this summer also and they too, are missed.

21. E. Ryan E Houston- Some know this guy personally and think that he's a nice guy. And that's a good thing.
I only know him from his posts on the NFBC Boards. That's probably a bad thing.
I can only give my perspective, so here goes...
Fanball bought the NFBC a few years ago. Ryan E Houston WAS Fanball.
I disliked almost every post he made on the Boards. He promised parties. He promised this. He promised that.
I called him out for sounding like a 2 A.M. Infomercial, I believe.
He didn't like that at all and when others started smelling the stench from his posts, his posts were seldom seen.
The Fanball era was the worst for the NFBC. Greg was handcuffed.
Fanball actually saved the NFBC from dying at a time when a big company was needed.
At the same time, some felt it may have been better to die quickly than the slow death Fanball provided.
In the end, Fanball and 'E' was the right company at the right time to keep the NFBC afloat.
At the same time, they botched almost everything they touched.
It is only through Greg's will and toughness that the NFBC survived that time with Fanball.

I hope this helped......There is a lot of history in the NFBC's 10 years and if there are any questions about something not understood, feel free to ask me or another NFBC vet.....
