2014 NFBC Live Draft Dates: March 21-23, 27-30

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:44 pm

I have been receiving a lot of emails lately from folks who want to plan their 2014 fantasy baseball schedules. Every year we are dependent on when the Major League Baseball season starts, but I can say with confidence that the following schedule is likely going to happen:

Las Vegas: March 21-23
New York City: March 21-23
Las Vegas: March 27-30

We just completed a fantastic NFFC season at the Hotel Penn in New York City and at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. I've already talked with the Bellagio about our March schedule and even though they have a strong convention season planned for March they feel confident that they can accommodate us again. I am going with the plan that we will be back there for two weekends. March Madness starts on March 20th with the Final 64 and Sweet Sixteen begins on Thursday, March 27th. This is an ideal time to host back-to-back weekends of drafts in Las Vegas and even some mid-week live drafts for those who stay all the way through.

New York City is always tough and we'll call the New York Hilton and Sheraton again. We've hosted live drafts at those two venues before and they are preferred choices by us, but with the strength in the economy their hosting prices have also gone well beyond our borders!! Hotel Penn has been very accommodating and affordable enough to run $1,000 Auction leagues there. Tom is going to look into everything and finalize a New York venue as soon as possible, but a return to Hotel Penn is very possible.

We are uncertain of anything else outside of those two cities. Chicago was a very difficult venue for baseball and football this past year as more and more of our customers draft online (even from Chicago itself) and others not only tested Las Vegas last year but thoroughly enjoyed it. It's possible that being everywhere for everyone isn't as needed in 2014 as it was in 2004. We'll see.

The Diamond League this year will be held on Saturday night, March 29th and Sunday morning, March 30th. Some owners have asked for something bigger than a Diamond league and we'll discuss that soon. The Ultimate Auction League will be the final event on Sunday night, March 30th, while the 12-Team NFFC Ultimate League will be on Friday night, March 28th.

We will discuss some new enhancements soon and we'll maybe even discuss a new contest. We had some success with a new format in football and I think it's worth looking into for baseball. I also feel we are under-serving our 12-Team Main Event and maybe it's time to step that up a notch. And we hope to get the NFBC Draft Champions League started earlier than ever before, with Registration opening sooner than ever before.

There's a lot of work to do for 2014. We think we know how it's going to play out. But it's time for you folks to plan ahead as well, so plan on the weeks above and get ready for what we all know is going to be another record-breaking fantasy baseball season.

Not sure what I will do next year, but if Chi is gone as a live draft venue I will greatly miss it. I understand the decision. We've lost people regularly over the last couple years or so and it did get agravating drafting against the same guys every year. I will miss seeing and talking to that group every year though. Really enjoyed it and looked forward to the draft every year. Glad Paco Tyme made it back last year after going to Vegas the last couple years. Got to meet Doughboys a few years back and that was great too. Great bunch of hard core guys. I may do online next year, but it just won't be the same. Also no auction. All things must pass and I've been afraid Chi would die if we didn't attract more people. Tried to convince more to come, but to no avail. 2 leagues won't cut it.

No, AL and NL Auctions will be Friday, March 28 at the Bellagio Las Vegas. The Second Weekend will be the full weekend of live events in Las Vegas. Tout Wars on March 21-23 makes the most sense!! ;)

Tout Wars is nothing if not sensical!

Drafts are indeed the 22nd and 23rd.

I'm going to miss my red-eye into Newark from Vegas and the $40 shower at the Travelodge.

Chicago is the home base for STATS LLC, so we'd love to have a healthy Chicago live event as well, but unfortunately the recent trends have made it tough to do just that. Heck, we have Chicago participants who draft online these days, which is fine, but it makes it tough to budget for space and make it a good live event for participants.

Anyway, there is no plan at this point for a 2014 Chicago live event. We will meet as a group shortly to talk about all locations and getting space is doable for the Second Weekend, but demand is the key. It just hasn't been there recently in the Windy City as more and more people feel comfortable drafting big money events online.

These are tentative dates and times for now, so tread carefully. Also, the NFBC Main Event is being called the NFBC Classic for now and the NFBC XII is being called the NFBC Primetime. The NFBC Primetime also is seeing an increase in entry fee and a grand prize that could reach $100,000. More details to follow this week.

We are working with the Bellagio again to return there for both weekends and things look good. We can't sign a contract this far out from the event, but we have room block info and more. This venue looks good for us again. We do not, however, have a New York venue yet as Hotel Pennsylvania has another event on March 21-23. Tom is working on that now and that will take some time. Stay tuned there.

I'm happy to report today that we will have this year's NCAA Viewing Party in a Bellagio Executive Hospitality Suite on Thursday, March 27th:

http://bellagio.com/hotel/executive-suite.aspx

We've hosted our NFFC parties in this suite the last two years and it's a great place to host a gathering of good friends who want to hang out, have some drinks and watch some hoops. With only four games on Thursday it won't be too hard for everyone to get their bets in for the night and still make additional bets if needed. Anyway, this will be a very nice setup for 30 or so guests and we'll announce details as we get closer to Registration going live.

We'll also keep the room for Friday night's NFBC 12-Team Ultimate League draft. That boardroom is SWEEEEEEEET and it will be the perfect setup for this league. Look for more details again on this, but this will make the 12-Team Ultimate League feel special and it will be the perfect setup for the final draft of the night. I'm lovin' it. :D

Planning parties is the fun part of this job, but I think we have a good start to the Second Weekend in Las Vegas. :D

Now that the NFBC XII ( a name I always hated :( ) is being renamed to Primetime and the ME is changed to Classic, I think the Roman Numerals should be repurposed to a suggestion that was made a couple of years ago.

Each season the NFBC Classic should get numbered just like the Superbowl does.

This just completed season would have been NFBC Classic X

Next year will be NFBC Classic XI

I would not do the same for the NFBC Primetime, although if you want something similar I would use the years

I agree, Russ, I never liked the Roman Numerals either. Just looked out of context. Primetime 12 looks simpler.

As far as the 'Classic', it can be given any name it wants, it'll still be the Main Event to most of us.
When we order a Coke, we assume it'll be a 'Coke Classic'. We don't have to say the name.
Same with the Main Event, it can be called other names, but it'll always be the Main Event to most of us.

Sorry, I feel a commercial coming....

For all you fellas that won a 50 rounder (I forget what Greg calls them  ), or a satelite, or another smaller league.
It is time to put your big boy pants on. Don't brag that you won a championship to your wife! When you get that check in the mail, be affirmative and ask her, no.... TELL her, that a vacation to Las Vegas needs to be made in March.
You may think you're a great fantasy player for having won that league, you may be.
But now, now, it is time to see what you're really made of.
Come to Las Vegas and show what you've got against the Big Boys.

Think of winning that 50 rounder, etc as winning a triple AAA title. After all, players in Las Vegas, New York, and Chicago use those 50 rounders, etc as a big league player would use triple AAA for rehab.
Plan your trip today or when the check arrives. The retention rate for those that come to these Live Events is amazing.
Ask Greg.
We all love it. And you're missing out.
If you've never gone, treat yourself. Give your wife enough money to shop at a Mall in Vegas while you're inside shopping for players. You'll never stay home in March again.

Sorry for the Commercial interruption.
Carry on.....
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Damn if this didn't almost just motivate me to make the pilgrimage to the Mecca of Fantasy Baseball. What with us Chicagoans being abandoned and left orphans without home, I am seriously considering this. Now, if this "viewing" party had two TV's so both the TBS and CBS college basketball broadcasts are viewable simultaneously so I'm not slumming it with one TV in the "Executive Suite," and there is a bottle of Makers Mark 46 with vermouth and cherries then my high-maintenance ass is in.

Come on fellow Chicagoans....in the immortal words of one Rocky Baal-BOA (in Chicago SuperFan voice), "What are we watin' for?? Take us!"

P.S. Greg, we, Chicagoans, may also require the "grill-class" treatment in the Executive Suite.

For those who have not attended the NCAA viewing party, you have missed out. Meet old friends, get good advice (then ignore it), meet new friends, beer, basketball, and betting.

And now we have a menu suggestion that I could get behind...brats! Good mustard and grilled onions on mine please!

Seriously, if you come to Vegas and are in town by Thursday, attend. You will not regret it. By that time Miley Cyrus may even show up because we will be the last group of homo sapiens that she hasn't twerked yet and she will be anxious to check that off her bucket list.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Chris, there are 3 TVs in that room, so having both games on at once shouldn't be a problem. The setup is suite as Glenn and others will tell you. And we can even have a poker game in the big boardroom that night if folks want. It's all set up for a great time, but we're limited to the first 30-35 guys.

I don't think Glenn drank all of the Maker's Mark from football, so I'm sure we can get you some. 8-) All requests are welcome as part of the entrance fee to the party!! I do the shopping personally for the bar, so bring it on.

And your picture is missing Rodgers in the middle seat!! ;)

NFBC Primetime 2014
This is a good idea Russell. I like it.

Also, the NFBC Main Event is being called the NFBC Classic for now and the NFBC XII is being called the NFBC Primetime. The NFBC Primetime also is seeing an increase in entry fee and a grand prize that could reach $100,000. More details to follow this week.
This is great news and will fuel growth into this game. You have a built in farm system for the growth within this format. That farm system is the current online championship. Everyone learning the game in this format will graduate to the primetime. It does not prepare them for the Main Event. The Main Event is very established and should continue to flourish. In football the Primetime has bypassed the Main Event as the premier game with a $150,000 prize.

I think the baseball primetime will take a little longer to grow, but this will certainly grow the game and the NFBC. Marketing to and through the online championship is the way to go. Congratulations on growing this format I think it will be a big winner!!

Just a heads up that Tom is working hard on our New York City home in 2014 for baseball and football and may have a familiar place in Manhattan. We're doing all we can to remain in Manhattan March 21-23 and we think we may be back on familiar grounds. Stay tuned as Tom plays lead negotiator at contract time. ;)

Greg,

Is Chicago even being considered as a location this year, or are you foregoing it completely?

I know that the interest there has waned over the past few seasons, just trying to figure out where I'll be drafting this year, and would strongly prefer a return to Chicago.

Thanks!

After struggling to fill a total of 4 Chicago leagues last year (2 Mains, 1 XII, 1 Auction), we do not have any plans for Chicago at this point. Again, our company is based in Chicago and we've supported a third regional event for 10 years, so obviously we'd love to see Chicago grow as a regional venue. Heck, we even tried St. Louis for a few years. But it's tough to guarantee space and food & beverage and then fall short of goals each year, so this is a tough one unfortunately. If the demand were there, we'd build it.
