$400 DRAFT CHAMPIONS PAYOUTS

Post by COZ » Mon Dec 30, 2013 11:43 pm

I'm just curious...what's the theory behind awarding 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places in each $400 DC league the same amount of prize money when it is not done in the $150 DC leagues?

Does this not encourage more punting of category strategies so as to aim to finish in 3rd place and thereby disincentivize playing for first place? And does an excess of punting strategies thereby affect the whole viability of the overall championship for the $400 DC's if certain leagues have guys consistently punting categories? And does this not then favor the $150 DC leagues in the overall championship where there is no incentive to shoot for 3rd place?

Although I benefited last year by finishing in 3rd place, I, for one do not like any prize structure that rewards and encourages finishing in 3rd place, and thereby encouraging punting strategies. Don't get it, but then again, I'm dumb. Please explain.

The theory was that all 3 finishers got a free main event entry. Since STATS took over, all prizes are paid in cash, but the prize payouts for this format haven't changed.

I like the payout structure. Makes it less stressful way to profit 1K. I think you're over analyzing, especially since it's a zero-transaction league. And if someone punts (a concept I personally don't believe in), then theoretically they should be stronger in others cats. I thought the overall prize was total stats and not relative to the other members of your particular league, which would punting would always hurt you and rarely help you in the overall.

The prize payout for this contest was actually requested by our players when we first started the Slow Draft format. The thinking was that when you are drafting this early in the off-season a lot can happen and thus it might be fair to pay the top three spots equally. I am all for creating a $400 DC with higher payouts for first and second place if anyone wants to play in a league like that. We can start the signup thread here if needed.

We are paying out $4,500 per league. Something like:
1st = $2,900
2nd = $1,200
3rd = $400

Just a thought, but we did change the payouts in the $375 DC in football and there's no reason not to think about doing it here too if demand warrants it. That being said, we had 16 full $375 leagues last year with the current payout structure, so some folks obviously like this payout plan. But we'll provide another option if demand is there. Thanks all.

Same here, it's the one league with a different type structure. If someone doesn't like it, every other NFBC league has the more standard 1st-3rd payout - this is a nice change of pace.

Thanks for the response, Greg. And the willingness to adapt. The reason I brought this up is because I was going to jump into a $400 DC until I realized the payouts were the same and I remember last year 2 teams were punting HR's, RBI's and it annoyed me. I remember at the time wondering why 1st-3rd were paid equally so as to encourage a 3rd place finish and thus a punting of categories. I actually prefer this new prize payout structure just to hopefully avoid punting-strategy-drafters. I know it's all legal, it's just annoying to me because it throws off my drafting equilibriums. So, hopefully the punters would avoid this type of league since it is more difficult to have a better return on investment and would instead play in the other socialist-prize-payout-DC's.

I am on board for a $400 DC with this payout structure. So if you want to put me down for this I am ready to start my Fantasy Baseball draft season. Who is in with me?????

Greg,

Put me down for a $400 Draft Champions' League with this different prize structure. Since I like round numbers, may I suggest a payout of:

1st: $3,000
2nd:$1,000
3rd: $500

Let me know if this is doable and if so sign me up for it. Hopefully this would dissuade punting strategies, but if not that is ok, since we welcome all draft strategies. I just think it would be less of an incentive since most teams would need to be well-balanced to place first or second.

Strike that...make it...

1st: $2,500
2nd: $1,500
3rd: $500

Yeah, I like that.
