Replacement Level/League "Average" Players
Replacement Level/League "Average" Players
Just catching up on my DVR'd "Clubhouse Confidential" programs....interesting show Friday.
They listed a League "Average" team, i.e. players whose OBP/SLG matches closely with comparable league averages for that respective position. They did not factor defense into this nor is this WAR, simply offensive production and limited to OBP/SLG comps to league average.
The 2013 All-League Average Team:
C: Alex Avila
1B: Adam Dunn
2B: Brian Roberts
3B: Todd Frazier
SS: Erick Aybar
LF: Carl Crawford
CF: AJ Pollock
RF: Alex Rios
Interesting stuff. No real fantasy relevance, but interesting to put a name and face to this mysterious "replacement-level" player that is so often bandied about nowadays.

Re: Replacement Level/League "Average" Players
On quick glance, Alex Rios doesn't belong in that group. Probably due to his low OBP in 2013.COZ wrote:Just catching up on my DVR'd "Clubhouse Confidential" programs....interesting show Friday.

For different reasons, I don't think Dunn or Crawford do either...

Re: Replacement Level/League "Average" Players
Yeah, it was merely based on OBP/SLG comps so obviously does not factor baserunning and defense like WAR does as an all-encompassing stat. Although, imperfect, I found it interesting. Would like to know replacement level players based on WAR....
or better yet an all-replacement level Fantasy team...i.e. using Fantasy stats....that would be fascinating to me...but Im too lazy and not proficient on baseball-reference.com. Maybe someone more statistically oriented could cone up with an All-Fantasy replacement level team by position.....

Re: Replacement Level/League "Average" Players
I always picture in my mind "replacement level player" to be the guy that provides stats that would be exactly the same as the stats that you would get if you call up any "Career Minor League Player" and put him into the lineup.Bama wrote:this is about as close as I could get

I'm using 200 PA as a base, that's approximately one third of a season and it conveniently allows my players to be ranked right at or near the bottom of the rankings needed for a full set of starters at that particular position.
Here are my 2013 Replacement Level Players along with their WAR and their overall rank at their position.
Player.........................WAR.......Positional Rank
C - Devin Mesoraco ...... .0.0...............35
1B-Garrett Jones............0.0..............30
2B-Anthony Rendon.........0.0...............31
SS-Daniel Descalso..........0.1...............33
3B-Placido Palanco..........0.0...............29
OF-Chris Young..............0.0..............102
SP-Jon Garland..............0.0..............150
All RP- Henry Rodriguez.....0.0..............225
CL- Danny Farquhar..........0.0..............35

Good job, Russ.
This was more along the lines to my way of reckoning....

Thanks. Rotoworld, I'm sure, would take issue with Bramdon Belt being called replacement level.Bama wrote:this is about as close as I could get
