Father / Son league

I'm not sure if anything like this has been brought up before, but I figured it was worth seeing if anyone was interested in putting something together. I know when I was younger, before fantasy sports became an industry and it was just my dad and his friends drafting in the basement and checking the newspaper for the boxscores, I used to draft with him. My dad and I have never been exceptionally close, but we always had fantasy baseball. I myself am not lucky enough to be a father yet, but I am lucky enough to be an "Uncle Mike" to my friends children. On of my friend's sons and I did our first fantasy football league this year and he's excited about baseball season. Can't explain how awesome it was to get a phone call from the bus on his way to school about which FA we should pick up or who we should start that week! We can do an ESPN league, but he was disappointed because "so many of the teams gave up" and he wants something "more competitive". After playing with the NFBC and NFFC for so many years now I can't think of a better place for him to get his compeitive fix and still have a great time!

So my proposition is this....it's his first time doing fantasy baseball and there's no reason to enter one of the bigger leagues. He's off from school next week which makes it the perfect time to draft. Are there any other father / son combos who would like to do a league together? Maybe 100 dollar league one afternoon next week? 10, 12, 14,15 teams....doesn't matter to me. Open it up to all those who would like to bond with their kids. Even a late afternoon draft? 3 or 4 pm next Wednesday 2/19? Give everyone a little time to sign up and prepare (his magazine was his Valentine's Day gift). I don't think it needs to be a Draft Champions League, think it will be good for them to learn the ropes of Free Agency, so just a straight 30 round draft. Pay top 3 type of deal. Competitive, but a fun learning experience for all of them.

I can do anytime after 4pm. Have to check with Greg/Tom to see if we can set up a satellite league that is not a DC, yet.

I think you want to expand it to fill any size league - for instance I would do one with my nephew or my grandson and I am sure other NFBC vets might have other children not daughters or sons

OR if you stick to the strict definition I will see if my daughter wants to do a team - she will be older than many of you but hey it would be father/daughter ...

I think it is great that you are being a mentor to this child and bonding with him in something that he enjoys.

I took my Dad to one of the live drafts in Vegas last spring, and then we went to AZ for spring training. The picture of the 2 of us next to the draft board will probably be one of my favorites of him forever. I'm hoping he can come this season too.

I do a few of the DC drafts with my girlfriend who has improved in the past 2 years to where she can now pick kids like Francisco Lindor and Miguel Sano in later rounds of a DC draft while I'm busy at work. Its nice to have a fun hobby to share and see someone get better at it (even though I sometimes step backwards at the same time, ha.

But I don't get the point of your request to make a special father-son league??? If all you really want to do is share a fantasy baseball team with the boy, why not do one of the $150 DC Express teams or $125 Satellite teams with him?? Does it really matter who you compete against and whether or not they are playing with their kids too? It seems like you want the experience of enjoying a baseball season with him, discussing your FA picks, and managing the team. Would it really make any difference whether or not the other teams were father-child teams??

I bought a $100 10 Team Satellite last year (which doesn't seem to exist this year) as a birthday present for my 13 year old son. He ran everything, from the draft to the weekly FAAB to setting lineups. It was a fantastic experience for both of us, and he was particularly pleased this past December when I handed him $550 in cash for his 1st place finish. We're signed up again for a $125 satellite but would change to this league if it truly consisted of teams owned by parent/young(ish) child(ren).

I adopted my (ex)wife's son ...oh...about 10 years ago when he was about 12yo. In the beginning he was a video game player and I was trying to get him outside and interested in a few sports. I decided I could combine his affinity towards electronics with my love for the game.

We started designing the basement as a war room for both football and baseball. Huge white boards, caulk boards, player tags, etc. The draft was like Christmas. Had to have pizza, dunkin doughnuts and plenty to drink.

We won a satellite league in our second year in the NFBC and got a trip to Citi Field for the ME the next year. He was 18 years old and decided to write a paper for his freshman report. He interviewed a couple of the more high profile guys before and after the draft. That was the year the Wall Street Journal came down and did a video piece. We were very excited to be included in a few shots.

Great bonding experience.

My daughter is now 12yo and just starting to take an interest in softball.
Maybe in a year or two.

I spoke to my daughter last night and her interest was piqued.
I know the target draft date was/is tomorrow.

It seemed like interest was luke warm for this season and most people needed to wait on doing it another year. I still think the league would be fun knowing everyone was partnered up with a son/daugher, niece/nephew, etc. I ended up taking the advice of someone on the boards and just signed up for a 100 dollar satellite league instead. Would be happy to revisit the idea earlier next year and try to get something set up.

I know it it was too late to start an official league like this for this season, but some of you expressed interest. I ended up signing up for the 10 team 100 dollar satellite league on this Sunday 3/9 with my friend's son. He's done the research, made his lists, and couldn't be more excited. There are still 10 openings in the league, so if any of you who were interested in a father/son league want to sign up for this and make it an unofficial "family" league I thought I'd put it out there.

Hope we can find enough guys to have have some fun and introduce our kids and family to this great game we love to play!
