Countdown To NFBC 2014

Post by Navel Lint » Wed Feb 12, 2014 3:03 pm

Over the years there have been some epic NFBC message board threads.

There have been analytical arguments. Who can forget the great “Joe Blanton Debate”?

Some threads have branched out into politics and the economy, such as the combined “Inflation / Gold / New World Order” posts in the fall of 2008.

How about the start to the 2010 season with the “Padilla/Fanball” debacle? That one at times questioned the integrity of the NFBC itself and some of our fellow competitors before cooler heads stepped in and things settled down.

We have had personal battle, “Walla Walla v Shandler”; and personal statement threads, "I Quit"

We have a 'give us the facts' thread, “Braun Suspended”

There have been required reading threads like "Stuff", "Fantasy Camp" and "Mouth Musings"

No single thread has had as many individual replies as the “All-Time Draft Thread” (1,953).

Yet none of these thread topics held the daily anticipation of reading or the universal admiration that Glenn Lowy’s “Countdown to the NFBC” 2012 topic had.

Glenn started his thread in the dead of winter, and for the next 100 days he posted pictures and commentary that helped pass the grueling time until the start of our baseball season. It was a must read and would probably be listed by many, if not most, the best single-topic thread ever on the message board.

And now we are in the dead of winter again, and Glenn has been asked to start a new countdown, but he has passed. He has passed for a good reason however, he’s already done it. What he did was so epic that he admittedly doesn’t want to try it again. So, he suggested that someone else give it a go and provide a new take on the countdown…………. I guess that’s where I come in.

I don’t have the writing skills of Glenn, Dan, Shawn or many of the other posters on our message board, but I have a solid knowledge of baseball history and I know how to find pictures on the internet. So I can't guarantee that this countdown will be as entertaining or informative as Glenn's; hell, I can't even guarantee a comment every day. Some days I may just get a picture posted and may leave it up to you guys to make the comment.

I will use March 22nd as my target date. That is the date of the first weekend Main Event. I know there are some events before this draft and many more after, but the Main Event IS the NFBC.

I'll try to spread the love around to as many MLB teams as possible, but like Glenn and his beloved Mets, you can expect to see more than a fair share of Cubs.

So will all due respect to Glenn’s original thread.

I give you the Countdown to the NFBC 2014………………

38 Days to NFBC 2014

I thought it would be only right to start this countdown off with a member of the New York Metropolitans. However, just like the Mets themselves, a number 38 has not had a lot of great success in New York.

In fact, jersey number 38 hasn't been that good overall in baseball. Of all jersey numbers 1 through 45, every single number has been retired by one team or another, every number that is except number 38.

There have been some decent players wear #38 as their primary number, but none are going to have it retired anytime soon.

Curt Schilling wore #38 throughout his career with the Phillies, Red Sox, and DBacks, but only his sock has been retired.
Image

Carlos Zambrano wore #38 with the Cubs, I'll let someone else tell him we aren't retiring his number.
Image

Some players wore #38 at the ends of their careers; Steve Carlton with the Twins, Bret Saberhagen with Colorado, and Luis Tiant with Pittsburgh. Yes, Tiant finished up with the Pirates among others. I had to look that one up to believe it.
Image

So back to the Mets. #38 has not had great success. From Roger Craig to Buzz Capra to Matt Wise and Vic Black. It's basically been a dark hole..........
Image

Except for one...........

Rick Aguilera was drafted by the Mets in the 3rd round of the 1983 draft. He made his ML Debut as a 23yo rookie on June 12, 1985 and picked up the first of his 86 career wins with two scoreless innings in relief. Aguilera pitched in 20 more games that season, including 19 starts.
Image

During his five seasons with the Mets he was 37-27 with a 3.58 era and 7 saves.

The Mets traded Aguilera in a deadline deal on July 31,1989 for Frank Viola. Rick has his most success with the Twins and eventually ended up with 318 career saves pitching for Minnesota, Boston and the Cubs.
Image

So when draft day comes and you are debating which player to take, you might want to take an extra second and think about their uniform number. Last season, of the 30 different players to wear #38, only 2 had a WAR above 1 (Tyson Ross, Joe Smith).
Image

And one last thing. If I've only remembered one thing from Advertising 101 it's this, sex sells. So you can expect some occasionally gratuitous shots of beautiful women in this countdown (all baseball related of course).

If the idea of drafting Pete Kozma, #38, doesn't get your juices flowing; or thinking back about the outstandingly average career of Rick Aguilera doesn't do it for you, maybe a photo of Christina Aguilera will work. :D

In journalism class, the Christina Aguilera pic would be a textbook example of burying the lead.

No...that number is 36DDD. Christina Hendricks age however is 38.

37 Days to NFBC 2014

"........perfection is unattainable" - Roy McAvoy

Image

On Sept 24,1988 Dave Stieb was one out away from a no-hitter, up to the plate came a relatively young Julio Franco. Franco hit what looked to be a routine ground ball to second baseman Manny Lee, but on the hop just before it got to Lee the ball hit a seam in the Sky Dome carpet and bounced high over his head. No-Hitter over.

Six days later on Sept 30,1988 Dave Stieb was once again one out away from a no-hitter, a chance to reclaim what the baseball gods had taken away in the previous start. With two outs in the 9th in front of a screaming crowd of 32,000, Stieb gave up a floating single over the first basemans head. No-Hitter over.

The next season, fate and Stieb would meet again. On Aug 4 Dave Stieb had a Perfect Game going into the ninth against the Yankees. Stieb struckout the first two batters. For the third time in 25 starts, Stieb was just one out away from a no-hitter and perfect game. Again it wasn't to be. Roberto Kelly hit a soft looping double down the left field line. No-Hitter over.

One year later, Sept 2, 1990. Stieb had a no-hitter again with two outs in the ninth. This time however he got his out. Stieb got his No-Hitter.

Image

Nobody has every had the perfect draft, at least not that I'm aware. There is always an injury or two here, an under-performing player there. Perfection unattainable.

Some of us fail year after year to win that elusive NFBC League Championship. Perfection unattainable.

But almost all of us come back each season. We strive for that "one draft", the one that will put us in position to win, always knowing .......Perfection unattainable.

And then, almost as if the baseball gods want to tease us, tease Stieb, we see another gain perfection.

Image
Kenny Rogers Perfect Game July 1994

Yet we come back, perfection unattainable.

Or is it..........................

Holy Cow! If she were bringing me a beer and a brat, she would be PERFECT!

Russ, thank you for the kind words regarding my Countdown a couple seasons back. Yes, it was a lot of work, but a blast adding to it every day.

If these first two entries for this year's Countdown are any indication, I think the right person has picked up the mantle and ran with it for this season. Two days in, great job so far.

After all, you seem to be hitting on all the necessary components to continue the template I created and followed in years past:

1. MLB players donning the jersey numbers that correspond with the days remaining in the Countdown. CHECK

2. A baseball, fantasy baseball, or NFBC related story to bring it all together. CHECK

3. Pictures of players who've donned the colors of the greatest team on Earth (my Mets of course). CHECK

4. The obligatory boob pics. Thankfully CHECK

5. A daily Massotto rip. Wait....I haven't seen one yet. C'mon Russ!!! Let's get on the ball here. WE'RE WAITING :D

In all seriousness, great job here Russ. I look forward to checking out this thread daily.

I have to admit that I'm at a disadvantage here. I've never met Mike, nor have we played in the same league. All I know about him is from what I read. Which is to say that you want him in your league because he is easy money.

Oh! That wasn't to difficult :D .......

36 Days to NFBC 2014

This year will be the NFBC's 11th Main Event. Can you believe it? Personally it will be my 7th, but it almost already seems like a lifetime since I first walked into the Rosemont Convention Center in Chicago for my first draft back in 2008.

For a lot of you reading this though, this will be your 11th season of drafting. You have already selected a generation worth of players for your rosters. From a HOF player like Barry Larkin who started his career in 1986, to a rookie like Jurickson Profar who was just in the 4th grade when you were first on the clock back in 2004.

Now try to picture what it will be like and which players might still be around to draft in 2028 when the NFBC has its 25th anniversary.

That must be the feeling Jim Kaat had during his career.
Image

Kaat pitched in the big leagues for 25 years. From 1959 through 1983. In his first game, the first batter he faced was HOF SS Luis Aparicio; and in his last game, he pitched in front of HOF SS Ozzie Smith. Kaat played with and against players whose careers span over 60 years.
Image
Kaat pitched 15 years with Minn and I couldn't find one picture with his #36 showing. :?

Jim Kaat is not a HOF pitcher, although his win total (283) is more than the combined totals of 5-time Cy Young Award winners Felix Hernandez, Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw (276).

Most of us won't be HOF fantasy players either, let us just hope that 14 years from now we will have enough NFBC wins under our belts to at least remind the youngsters who we are.

Kaat Women
Image

And rest assured, this won't be the last time you see Halle Berry. I don't care if I have to reference Ken Berry, Barry Zito, Damon Berryhill or Yogi Berr(a) to do it, you will see Halle Berry again.

And don't forget.......It is Valentines Day!

I remember Kaat talking about his longevity during a game once. He mentioned pitching to both Ted Williams and Julio Franco during his career -- the overlap spanning the years from 1939, Ted's rookie year to 2007 when Franco retired.

35 Days to NFBC 2014

Injuries can be fatal to NFBC rosters.
Sure, everyone is going to lose some at-bats or innings pitched to DL time, but it's how much time we lose and by whom that matters.
We all can recover from the two week loss of our 5th OF, but if our first round player goes down for several weeks or more, it really hurts.

The thing I really hate about injuries is when they happen. I can except a player pulling a hammy running down the first base line in May, but it drives me nuts losing a guy in February that I drafted in December.

Both Justin Verlander and Cole Hamels are injured. These players weren't hurt on the field, but that's where they are needed by fantasy owners.
How long will they be out?
Will the injuries affect their production when they do pitch?
Where should they be drafted?

Image

There are plenty of questions to ask, but we don't have any answers. Yet we still keep drafting.......the game never stops.......

How can I post a picture of Verlander and not post a picture of Kate Upton. That would be like posting a picture of Glenn and not having a corresponding photo of Mr. Met.
