5 Rounds per Day DC

Post by Money » Tue Feb 18, 2014 11:08 am

I'd like to see if there is any interest in a DC draft with a 5 round per day hard cap. The idea would be that we stop each night after 5 rounds. We would need to manipulate the timing a little bit at the end of the night. The players in the 2nd and 14th spots would start the following day on auto one letting the clock run down signaling the start of drafting for the following day or they could simply draft when ready the following morning.

The group will figure it out together and do what's best or necessary. Also after 35 or 40 rounds we could let if flow. In either event this is a 10 day draft.

This will allow players to evaluate their rosters in 5 round increments and evaluate the player pool for the next 5 rounds the following day. If there is enough interest I propose we start on Friday, February 28th or Saturday, March 1st.

You do need to be available throughout the day to make picks. This could not be a check in twice a day league.

If there is interest we'll have Greg set it up.

I think it's a pretty good idea too, Joe. I would think a 10-day Draft Champions League would appeal to a lot of folks. I hope it works and let me know if I can help. Should we start a signup list now?

Why do you call it 5 rounds/day when there is only an upper limit? The minimum time would be 10 days, but maximum could still be the same as any other slow draft. Am I missing something here?

No sure how this is an improvement unless drafting more than 5 rounds/day is considered a bad thing

We're seeking out like minded drafters who will commit to what it takes to draft 5 rounds per day. The idea is to do 5 rounds everyday. Could someone hold it up, absolutely, I'm banking on folks that know what 5 rounds per day requires. Kind of an honor system. It's 5 rounds, no more, no less for at least the first week. After that the league can decide to let it roll if they agree too.

Simply looking to create a 10 day draft as opposed to some that can really drag on. It's also for those that don't want it over immediately.

Not sure if we'll have enough interest, just thought I'd throw it out there.

I have done 8 slow drafts this year and the shortest was done in 13.5 days. With an 8 hour clock there is zero chance of the draft being done in ten days unless you have something in place to force 5 rounds/day.

I trust we could attract like minded drafters. I was in in a couple last year that were shorter. I only do a few per season. I have faith that those that would choose this route would embrace the concept.

It would certainly be great if possible. Would be tempted to do another 1-2 if it works out.

This is not so.
We finished a draft in four days a couple of weeks ago, with an eight hour clock.
The trick is to take the clock out of play. If all 15 are on board, time is not a concern.
Each entrant should ask themselves if they can check in close to hourly during the waking day or go on auto if not.
If the answer to either of those questions is no, this draft would probably be not for you.

Yeah its pretty simple. Get 15 guys/girls that are courteous, trustworthy, and dedicated. Guys/girls that are willing to be texted or emailed when their turn is up. Sure, things might come up and someone might have issues with a pick or 2. It happens. But as Dan said, we have had many of these types of DCs in the past, that have finished under 10 days.

This is just plain wrong.

Thanks Dan, you're definitely the master at running an efficient draft. I envision this type of draft being an in between of the 4 day and 3 week draft. A nice side benefit could be that hey when 5 rounds are completed we're done for the day or night, absorb the info and the remaining player pool and look forward to the next day.

I'm not sure how it would come off, it would be up to the group. Heck I wouldn't mind drafting 5 rounds between a few certain hours and then reconvening the next day at the same time.

I'm just thinking out loud here and don't think this will get off the ground at this point, I'm just attempting to allow those that want the chance to avoid a 3 week draft and have the flow defined to have the ability to do so.

Not true at all. We had an invitational "fast" slow draft about a month or so ago. 15 like-minded owners. An eight-hour clock. We finished all 50 rounds in 4.5 days, achieving a pace faster than ten rounds per day. You definitely can do a DC draft in less than ten days if the owners are committed to making that happen. Some might say we should be committed for going that fast, but I think we had a blast. In retrospect, a moderately-slower pace may have been optimal, but no one wanted to kill the momentum. We communicated frequently, stopped by agreement at night, but otherwise kept things moving through attentiveness, timely "you're up" texts, and the reasonable use of Auto One. Every owner refreshingly showed great consideration to the other owners.

Although I've got my hands full at the moment, I think there probably are a number of owners that would be interested in a DC draft with a five rounds per day expected pace. Good luck filling this one up.

You're right, Mike.
Some would say we were committed. Most think we should be committed. Thin line.

Point is that it can be done.
This draft would be perfect for drafters enjoying a faster pace.

Big difference between doing a draft with 15 invited owners and 15 random owners. Add in the fact that you now are limiting owners to 5 rounds/day.

Out of the 100+ random 15 owner drafts conducted so far I doubt there are more than 1-2 that have finished in under 10 days. Guessing the average is more like 15-17 days.

You're right. There is a big difference.
15 random people could have 15 different thoughts on how a slow draft fits them.
This is why there are complaints about different tempo'd drafters.
15 like minds would have the same goals.

The four day draft was a hoot. At the end though, I had some folks say that it may have been a little too quick.
I agreed. It takes time away from our 'normal' life.

Ok, we'll get Greg to add you to the list and see if we get some traction. Another nice thing about this is that when you pick in the 5th, 10th, 15th rounds etc., wether you pick early or late you know you're done for the day or evening after you've made that pick.

A lot of players hang around at night not wanting to be "That guy" that holds things up. We will have a defined finish and you can plan accordingly. I'm not sure if we'll get to 15 players but lets see how it plays out over the next couple of days.

Thanks.

Just a wonderful idea, Joe.
Put me on the list for this draft. Five rounds a day sounds like the perfect pace.
Just a great notion and hopefully we can get some great chat going in this draft!
Thanks Joe.

Fantastic Dan!

The chat that can ensue at the conclusion of a day could be unique as players prepare for the next day. I like it.

Any new players to the DC's that have been frustrated by some of the longer drafts and can commit to checking in often enough for 5 rounds per day should join in. To simply have access to Dans experience and forthright observations during the course of this draft will be of great benefit.

Welcome aboard Kris!!

We still have 9 days until the anticipated start so a player or two per day will get it done. If anyone has any questions about the vision or the flow post them here or PM me. 5 rounds per day hard cap, finished inside 10 days and the ability to analyze the draft in 5 round increments. This is for veterans and new comers alike and will prove very beneficial for draft prep for all of the events that will ensue later on in March.

I'm going out of town March 13-16 and likely wouldn't be able to keep up so we'll need to get this thing rolling by March 2 or so in order for me to be able to participate.

No problem, if this doesn't get off the ground by then, we won't be doing it. Let's see if we get some more interest over the next week.
