Hankerchiefs Wins Week 14 Prize

Post by Tom Kessenich » Mon Jul 10, 2006 2:21 am

Congratulations to Hankerchiefs in Las Vegas League 3 for finishing first in the NFBC last week with 2,650.5 points.

A big week from Jose Reyes (.450, 5 SBs) led the way while Chone Figgins (.400-1-6-5), Jermaine Dye (.379-5-11) and Jim Thome (.344-3-6) also delivered big offensive weeks. John Lackey fanned 10 to lead the pitching staff while Takashi Saito had 3 saves.

Congrats Hank. As my grandfather always said two balls is better than one.

Competing against more than 300 of the top fantasy baseball minds in the country is difficult enough. So beating them once in a year is an extremely impressive accomplishment.

But twice? Now that’s some hallowed territory. And that’s where Hank Cantrell now belongs after his team’s stellar Week 14 showing.

With Jose Reyes leading the way once again, Cantrell’s Hankerchiefs team in Las Vegas League 3 topped the NFBC for the second time this year, posting 2,650.5 points. Cantrell also posted a first-place finish in Week 2.

As he is with the Mets, Reyes (.450, 5 SBs) was the catalyst for Cantrell’s team as well. Chone Figgins (.400-1-6-5), Jermaine Dye (.379-5-11) and Jim Thome (.344-3-6) also delivered big offensive weeks. John Lackey fanned 10 to lead the pitching staff while Takashi Saito had 3 saves.

“Hitting has worked out well for me this year, especially with Jose Reyes putting up career numbers,” Cantrell said. “Pitching has been another story.

“I tried the closer-only strategy in previous years, sacrificing Wins and Strikeouts for ERA and WHIP. This year I drafted starting pitching but dang it if the results aren’t the same – solid ERA and WHIP but no Wins or Strikeouts.

“Maybe someday the Astros will actually score a run for Roy Oswalt.”

Cantrell’s big weeks have put him in a prime position to win Las Vegas 3. But he’s finding that the Movers team isn’t going to go away without a fight.

“I tip my hat to them,” said Cantrell, who lives in Raleigh, NC with his 15-year-old son, Greg. “They’ve assembled an outstanding team through the draft and free agency. I sure hope I can catch them.”

For finishing first last week Cantrell wins a Ryan Howard autographed baseball courtesy of Tri-Star Productions.

Congrats Hank. Can I assume that with your success this year that the all-closer strategy is forever out the window? :D Seems like coming out to Las Vegas for this one is paying off. Keep it going.

Thanks, King. I was thrilled to even win one week.

Greg, indeed the closer strategy is a thing of the past - or perhaps that is what I want my fellow drafters to think next year!
