We put far too much weight in the ADP. If this drafter thinks that Tanaka can produce ace-like stuff on a revamped Yankee team with new offensive additions...more power to him. I got lucky last year and grabbed Chris Davis relatively late, passing on the other big name first basemen. If anyone was sure he was going to go yard over 50 times, he would not have lasted that long. (Josh Donaldson?)
I was actually reading an article on Masterball by Todd last night and this was pretty much the point. Why are we all married to ADP? Should be called YGGM (Your Guess is as Good as Mine). Yeah I'm making notes....but...
If you tell me in September that Tanaka went 19-6 with a low 3.00 era and maybe 175-185K's...wouldn't he be worth that slot?
He's speculating.
I'm speculating Davis won't touch 50 HR this year nor maintain last year's avg.... YGGM.
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I also salute the drafter.
When the season begins, he won't remember where he drafted Tanaka, only that Tanaka is rostered.
A lot of us try and eke out as much of a bargain as we can for players. Then tell ourselves we were 'snaked'. 'Snaked is more of an excuse than an occurrence. We had control in getting our guy, but greed is a vicious fault. In doing so, we lose out on the guy we REALLY thought was going to have a good year. We are under the false impression that all players in the second round are better than all of those in the fifth round. It is not so. Look at any draft from a previous year.
Drafters are similar to Yard Salers. Some are looking to haggle for a quarter in obtaining an item, while another customer looks at an item that may be worth a lot of money and will pay full price or even more just to possess the item.
Could Tanaka have been had in the third or fourth round?
Probably.
But the word 'probably' infers that there is a chance he wouldn't. This drafter removed all doubt.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
ADP in this sense is a general measure of opportunity cost. Straying wildly outside of ADP (or maybe earliest pick, depending on trend) for a specific player increases the probability that the drafter forwent the opportunity to have a more productive fantasy player paired with the reached-for-player than he now has the ability to select based on inventory being depleted in a somewhat known fashion (ADP) by the other drafters. It's not about the guy you got, it's about the guy you didn't get.Atlas wrote:First let me say that this wasn't my draft and that Tanaka at that point might be a bit too rich for me personally, but I understand it.Roger Dorn wrote:I get grabbing 'your guy' earlier than ADP. My original comment had little to do with 'reaching' vs ADP. I think we all agree successful teams aren't governed by ADP lists. Same draft, same team picked Molina in round 4. Good for him for taking his guy. Like I said originally, we all do it and most of the time it feels great taking our guy several picks/rounds before his ADP.
My thought has more to do with Tanaka. And how can he be anyone's guy given he hasn't thrown a MLB pitch yet.

Major League experience has little to do with a drafter who is sold on a player.
Mike Trout hit .220 in his first taste of the Major Leagues. He was barely drafted or not drafted at all the next year.
Tanaka, like Trout, had success in other leagues. Trout owners rejoiced when Trout had the year he did.
I'm not trying to compare Tanaka to Trout in an on-field type of way, just the comparison in how little they see Major League fields before blossoming.
This drafter, and I have no idea who it is, is sold on Tanaka. Major League experience or not. Whether he is right or wrong will not be known till after April.
If I were to be guaranteed the mentioned stats from a second round starter with good WHIP, I would take it and move on with the rest of my draft.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

"My thought has more to do with Tanaka. And how can he be anyone's guy given he hasn't thrown a MLB pitch yet. "
Same way he was the Yank's "guy" without throwing a MLB pitch
They saw something they liked and speculated on the return.
Other teams didn't....or more to the point...it was too rich for their blood.
Not sure of the return or...dare I say..."value" Same as this drafter did.
Maybe they overpaid...maybe they didn't. Let's see in September.
Hidecki Matsui or Kei Igawa?
But as a Yankee fan...I'd rather see my team speculating on a big return than be safe and taking second tier pitchers in the hopes of getting by. And yes, this takes money out of their (large) budget that would preclude another quality selection much as this drafter used his second pick and negated a different quality selection.
Meh...good debate for a slow Wednesday.

Wednesdays will never be the same!
Some further thoughts
The Yankees have the luxury of time while this owner needs a 2nd round return this year.
For the same $ / commitment (e.g. round 2 pick) I bet the Yankees would prefer some SPs taken after Tanaka in this draft.
I have Tanaka in one league and he could be very good. But I took a different risk to get him. At the time of the DC league I took Tanaka it appeared he wasn't going to get posted. At 321 overall he seemed like an worthwhile bet. I guess one could argue that that pick at that time was more risky than this recent round 2 pick. Certainly more uncertain. As SP6 lower opportunity cost, maybe.
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I peek in on the NFFC Boards sometimes
This reminds me of a disagreement there. It came after Peyton Manning had thrown tons of touchdown passes in his opening game. There were more drafts scheduled and Mannings stats would count for those who drafted him.
The argument FOR drafting Manning was that all those stats would be assured for the first week of the season and a team would probably be on their way to a 1-0 start.
The argument against Manning was that previous drafters had already taken him in later rounds and the chance for an Overall Championship would be lessened in taking Manning.
It made for excellent conversation, just as this does. In the first draft of the season, Tanaka went off the Boards with the 322nd pick.
Football is different than baseball in that it is more of a sprint than marathon, plus less positions to cover.
Does the guy who took Tanaka have a leg up on the Overall?
Maybe.
At the same time, that early start had him picking Machado in the fifth and Iwakuma in the sixth.
The whole damn thing makes it all very interesting indeed.

On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
