2014 Early Season Draft Results
Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
Taking tanaka at 26 (or anyone that far before his adp, in relative terms, is lunacy IMO

This reminds me of a disagreement there. It came after Peyton Manning had thrown tons of touchdown passes in his opening game. There were more drafts scheduled and Mannings stats would count for those who drafted him.
The argument FOR drafting Manning was that all those stats would be assured for the first week of the season and a team would probably be on their way to a 1-0 start.
The argument against Manning was that previous drafters had already taken him in later rounds and the chance for an Overall Championship would be lessened in taking Manning.
It made for excellent conversation, just as this does. In the first draft of the season, Tanaka went off the Boards with the 322nd pick.
Football is different than baseball in that it is more of a sprint than marathon, plus less positions to cover.
Does the guy who took Tanaka have a leg up on the Overall?
Maybe.
At the same time, that early start had him picking Machado in the fifth and Iwakuma in the sixth.
The whole damn thing makes it all very interesting indeed.
They're already running football DCs. Degenerates!
I remember that thread. A few cutline leagues had Manning going first overall after that opening game. Great debate. For cutline (9 weeks I believe) that week 1 stat line really helped.
My overall hopes are lost, I thought I bottom ticked Tanaka at 321?!?

That first draft of the season was a 30 round draft, not eligible for Overall.

Its not about the guy you didn't get. It's about the guy you didn't want.
"
Sure?
I'm suggesting you can have (i'm just gonna roll with tanaka, though it's any major reach) Tanaka, AND another player you presumably would want more than whoever you have to settle for by taking a player 3-10 rounds early. Are there people out there who would NOT prefer a combo of Pedroia+Tanaka vs Tanaka+Utley? You can have Tanaka in both cases. You cannot have Pedroia in both. Obviously drafts are more dynamic than that simple example, but at the core level, that to me is the effect of any reach (and more detrimental the earlier rounds). It's irrelevant if Tanaka goes 32-0 with a sub 1era/whip and 400Ks. At the time the pick was made, the pick cost the drafter opportunity to have an overall better team.
And if ADP here doesn't really mean much to the level it can be ignored willy-nilly, doesn't that mean that AS A GROUP the NFBC DCers are shitty drafters?

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
Let's look at this a different way.
Albert Pujols was a bottom of the first round pick last year. I don't remember his exact ADP, but let's say it was 15.
He was being taken early in the off season at mostly around the six to 12 spot in the first round.
Then, as reports came out and folks saw him in spring training, his adp started falling.
If remembering correctly, some drafters got him late in the second round or close to the third.
Some even cried 'value pick'.
As it turns out, no matter who selected Pujols, they were screwed a bit by his later round numbers. The reckoning being by most that it is automatic that drafters picking Pujols in the first round were screwed most. Making it seem like a foregone conclusion that the missed first round pick is more egregious than second rounder.
Until it is discovered that the drafter who took Pujols in the second took Kemp in the first. The drafter taking Pujols in the first took Adam Jones in the second.
We are under the natural assumption that a first round pick will be better than the second who will be better than the third.
It is not shitty drafting. It's a natural thought process. Some bypass that thought process and select hitters or pitchers that are more believed to have a great year.
The majority make up adp. A small minority win drafts.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
I am surprised that with all of the discussion on taking Tanaka in the 2nd round, it hasn't been brought up that this drafter took Kershaw - Tanaka - King Felix in the first 3 rounds. It doesn't appear this drafter really cares about conventional thinking... or winning, for that matter... Looks like a Deadheadz draft.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
There is nothing wrong with taking 3 pitchers with your first 3 picks heck there is nothing wrong with taking 6 pitchers with your first six picks.
No draft is won with those picks(some are lost though) as long as you have a game plan and you don't miss on your next 15 consecutive picks you will be fine.
what is this ADP you all speak about?

Basically agree with you here. "Value" and production don't follow a linear path down the rounds (fantasy baseball would pretty much be zero fun if they did). BUT, on balance, I'd bet that the average say 2nd round pick produces more fantasy impact than the average 6th round pick...if a drafter "reaches" by 15-30 picks of ADP, sure, no biggie. But when a drafter is skippin 60+ picks? I dunno, would be hard for me to get on board, personally, for the reason I tried to express earlier (but I think didn't do a great job at).DOUGHBOYS wrote:Let's look at this a different way.

I admire the guy who took Tanaka at #26 for having guts.
Pick the players you want and ADP be damned.
However, would I have taken Tanaka that high? Nope. I'm not picking a guy that high who's never played MLB before. Not doing it.

Don't get me wrong. It is not a habit of mine to jump players three rounds before their adp. It is a seldom used weapon in the fantasy arsenal. And I for sure would not do it in DC's for many reasons. I have and would do it in a Main Event however.EWeaver wrote:Basically agree with you here. There is a big difference between jumping a guy from the 20th round to the 16th round and jumping one from the 5th to the 2nd.
The sheep finally showed up in this thread. So funny to see fun made out of those that use ADP and then in other threads the same folks fight tooth and nail to have it excluded from the site.
I couldn't care less it wouldn't impact me whatsoever. It is simply hypocritical and for some reason I find the need to point that out.

No fun was made of those who follow adp unless counting the Gekko picture. There are several ways to win drafts. If following an adp works for some, so be it. Same for those that do not follow adp.
There are many ways to skin a draft.

Re: 2014 Early Season Draft Results
It is your money, play it the way you want. But I will say that jumping 60 or so places means you are a little to vested in one guy (yes, I know, hypocritical given my man-crush on Votto last year). You want him, fine. But between where you got him and where you reasonably (95%+ probability) COULD have got him means there are at least 45 other players that you do not think will help your team. Given that they were in round two, I find that hard to believe.
Take him, that is fine, but you are leaving at least one player from the elite, early-round levels (i.e. comparing 2nd rounders to say 6th rounders) that could have been on your team as well. Opportunity cost is a bitch.

Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
