MLB's worst stat can be a Win for a non-deserving pitcher

Post by Steel Lugnuts » Tue Apr 15, 2014 5:55 pm

How the heck can this Avilan kid for Atlanta give up 5 runs in the 8th last night and get the W? There has to be a way where they can still give the W to Santana for pitching 6 innings and only giving up one run...not sure how they would do it, but damn, that would suck to own Santana after that B.S. Maybe leave it up to the discretion of MLB to give it to the most deserving pitcher.

(c) The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.

I didn't realize it was a MLB stat, i.e., a WIN for a non-deserving pitcher; Santana no W because the PEN blew it, he gets the win because he is the pitcher of record when ATL takes the lead. I would love to see the proposal where Santana would get the W; lets see, if t he reliever gives up a certain amount of runs and that team comes back to win and the SP pitched really well and deserved to win except the Pen gave up lots of runs.....

Was a game last year where Robertson blew the lead for Yankees in top of 8th. Yankees took lead in bottom 8th. Mo came in and closed out 9th. Scorer gave Mo the win and not the save.

I have Santana on a number of teams. It was painful. How Avilan was left in to pitch to Marlon Byrd who kills left handed pitchers with the bases loaded was unforgivable. The only thing I could think of was since Kimbrel wasn't available maybe the manager was short handed in the bullpen.

Lefty D. Brown was also coming up after Byrd.

I didn't know this rule, but they obviously didn't use this option, and this also wouldn't have helped Santana.

I didn't say you don't know the rules, I responded to your suggestion they change the rule; you know, leave it to the discretion of MLB to give the W to the most deserving pitcher. Remove objectivity for subjectivity.
