The Lighter side of the Dark Side....

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Aug 27, 2014 3:07 pm

Just some things thought about while on the Dark Side....

I found that drafting football players in rounds 20-35 is like taking Closers in Waiting for baseball teams.
We think that somebody may have the talent for a gig, but needs the opportunity to open up for them.

My daughter gave me Hell for drafting Roethlisberger. She calls him 'Rapelisberger'. My daughter has strong feelings about male abusers.
I gave the 'Fantasy drafters don't care about off field activities, unless effecting on field play' speech. No avail.
She responded that Fantasy drafters are stupid then.
I agreed....then drafted Ray Rice in the next draft....this time I kept my mouth shut.

I don't understand the need for third round reversal.
If drafting at the top of the draft, you're happy with the running back received. If at the middle or end of the round, you're happy with your wide receiver, Manning, or Graham.
I'm a cheapskate and thought drafting neat the middle or bottom was a bargain with 3rd round reversal.
I'm happy we don't do that in baseball. Trout/Wright and Tulo/Encarnacion looks pretty fair to me.

Slow drafts are the same in football as baseball. There are pita's trying to hurry folks up. There are even more pita's that take six hours.
'Like mind' drafts are still the way to go in my way of reckoning for both sports .
If wanting a rapid paced draft, sign up for a rapid paced draft. Expectations would be less than an hour per pick.
If slow-slow, then sign up for a slow-slow draft. Expectations would be 'whenever I get to it'.
We'll never have personal clocks and cutting time off the 8 hour clock won't work either.
Offer fast paced, slow paced, or 'pot luck' Championship Drafts for those that like the misery.

Quarterbacks are like catchers in baseball. They can be slow drafted and wait till near the end or use a high pick to get Manning, Rogers, or Brees.
In this comparison, fantasy football has it right over fantasy baseball. They can start only one QB.
There should only be one starting catcher in baseball.
We only use two in baseball because of tradition. It's stupid really.

Injuries are the same.
"I would never take Ryan Matthews because he'll break down is akin to "I'm never taking Tulo because he'll break down."
"Andrew Luck has never been hurt" is akin to "Robinson Cano never gets hurt"
This is the leaky pipe/washing machine hose theory. If a pipe that has leaked before, leaks again, we're not surprised and take it in stride, almost used to the event.
If a washing machine hose leaks, we're mortified, and causes more damage than we ever thought.

There are no Tommy John's in football. Which is only right since he didn't play the game.
And there are no obliques. Surprising in that football players twist and turn more than baseball players.
There are a lot of abbreviated injuries in football....ACL's, MCL's, etc.

Receivers seem to get as many concussions as catchers.

Baseball Managers look bored. Football Coaches look like an expectant father.

During a game, a running backs coach is as useful as a first base coach.

With all the technology that is around, they still measure first downs with a 10 yard chain.
Tape measure home runs, a much greater distance, use modern technology for measurement.

In baseball, commercials wait till the inning is over or a pitching change is made.
In football, it seems commercials can't wait.

There are no perfect games or no-hitters in football, just shutouts.

A receiver doesn't get an 'error' for a dropped pass. He should. And it still counts as a missed attempt for the QB.

An offensive runner can fumble at his own one yard line, have the other team score on the next play and it is counted against the defense.
A little like a Starter leaving the game with the bases loaded and nobody out, but all those runs will be charged to the reliever.

Football players are never 'rested' for a game.

All defensive players in football are switch 'hitters'.

'Grounding the ball' is usually not good in either sport.

Fans want to see more players in each sport 'go long'.

Sunday at 1 PM, est is a lot more exciting than 7 PM, est on Friday.

Throwing flags is a little silly in this day and age. Text the ref 'Def Holding, #55'. These flags and the conversation that follows is as interesting as a Manager coming to the mound, and take too long.

I am glad that on those rare occasions when a defense 'lets' the offensive team score to get the ball back, that it is not declared 'defensive indifference' and the running back is still credited with a touchdown.

Good stuff
My take...
Baseball beats football as a sport
Fantasy football beats fantasy baseball as an activity
Over the years I've made some $$ in football while in baseball I'm clearly in the category of "money donator". Maybe that explains my take on things..LOL

Funny, I'm the complete opposite. While I love baseball, football is my favorite sport to watch. That being said, I think fantasy baseball blows away fantasy football. I play in the fantasy football league at work, but I do no prep and just wing it. If I win, I win; if not, no biggie. I'm obsessive about fantasy baseball, actively manage all of my teams (including those where the manager should've been fired long ago), and am already thinking about the upcoming "drafting season" with anticipation.

Ha!
Waiting for the fade, Bryan... :D

I'll send out e-mails to all in mid-September and we'll get that puppy started before the final pitch of this regular season.
Can't wait!

After watching the first week of the Dark Side with fantasy ramifications.....

Doesn't anybody on the NFFC Boards care?.....

A 'kneel down is minus one yard?
Are you SERIOUS?
This is defensive indifference fer crissakes!
Football people are so stupid.....

Next, they'll tell me that a qb gets an incompletion for a spike....

PPR?
A receiver is credited for a loss on a play, just for catching the ball?
Isn't catching the ball his job?
What's next...a point per pass, a point per run....
Somebody'll have to explain that one to me.....

Troy Aikman thinks Dez Bryant is soft...

Did Jamaal Charles play today? I missed him....

Brandin Cooks is pretty damned good...

I'm glad there are no penalty flags in baseball....or in the bedroom....

These coaches and players look at ugly, sweaty guys for a long time. Then a pretty girl sticks a microphone in their face and asks a question....Not fair....

The NFL has made the kickoff a boring formality....

If Tom Gordon was 'Flash Gordon', does that make Josh Gordon, 'Hash Gordon' ?

The Saints said, "Who Dat?"...Should the Oilers thing be "Say Watt? "

Does it count if a Win comes against the Raiders?...

Somebody told Jacksonville that they were winning 17-0 at half time.
They fixed that.... and lost the second half, 34-0.

The Falcons should have Tony Gonzalez throw out a first pitch...
Oh wait...they don't do that.
How about if Gonzalez calls the coin flip, then dunks a ball over the goal post?
Go ahead, NFL, try fining him....

Jerry Jones teams are now .500 since the beginning of the Jimmy Johnson era....

Chris Ivory felt it was more important to point to the sky on the 40 yard line of a breakaway td run, rather than just tuck the ball and score a touchdown. He scored the td, but was tackled on the goal line instead of scoring easily.
This is akin to Yasiel Puig flipping the bat and walking down to first base on a homer that hits in the first row of seats.

One question about watching football all day..Is there a limit on commercials?
Do we have to see the same one's over and over and over...and do they all have Manning or Brees?.....

Good observations, Dan. A few quick responses.

As a rabid, lifelong (and long-suffering) Jets fan, a win against the Raiders definitely counts. In the paraphrased wisdom of Bill Parcells, you are what you're record says you are. The Jets are 1-0. I'd rather have an ugly win that a well-played loss. Thank God for the Raiders. Thanks to them, my Jets are in first place (tied) for at least one week.

I was ready to kill Chris Ivory. The guy's celebrating on the 40-yard-line? In case he doesn't know it, he's not exactly a speed-burner. He's just lucky he scored (barely) or it would've been the bonehead play of the day. Let's hope that's the last premature celebration we see from Ivory this season.

Totally agree re the repetitive commercials, with one exception: those At&T commercials with Lily. Don't know who the actress is, but man is she cute.

I really don't get running backs and receivers pointing before scoring.
The reason they are on their way to a td is somebody calling a good play, or one or two or three great blocks that spring the play.
By pointing so early, he gives the impression that HE is just that wonderful.
The play caller and the blocker(s) never point early, if at all...

Unfortunately my daughter's soccer game chewed up a good portion of the afternoon yesterday and I didn't get to watch much football. Most of my NFL time came courtesy of the radio.

But commenting on your first observation - it is a shame that the NFFC boards are dead. It's not 2006 anymore and like with just about everything else, the world has apparently moved on, leaving people like us in the dust and longing for the 'good old days'.

Dan check out the NFFC boards -- I've got a posting you will probably like.

Just checked it out.
Wow, that is amazing. Those two have truly stood up to the test of time.

I hate/love this time of year. I have an incredibly difficult time dividing my brain between baseball and football. Too much FAAB. Too many leagues. Trying to close out some of these baseball leagues and I'm too distracted by football.

In an Online Championship League where I am totally outclassed, but just like watching your closer give up the walk-off homer to your batter, got to watch my running back put the ball on the ground for my defense to score yesterday. Didn't know whether to crap or go blind....
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.
