Winter meetings - a strategy guide

Is it common during the MLB winter meetings to see managers in the NFBC Draft Champions leagues drag their heels in picking during the daytime hours so as to take advantage of breaking news?

If others are doing it, shouldn't we all?

Personally I like to get my picks in asap but when you see the clock wind down and the eventual pick is a big reach...until you see that a player who was moved creates huge value for the pick in question, it makes you wonder.

Is this why some leagues drag for weeks and others do not?


Just curious about the experiences of others.

I'm doing a DC league now where none of that is occurring. Folks are making timely picks and the pace has been strong throughout. We started on December 3rd and now are in Round 38 one week later. It really depends on the individuals in the particular draft. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with checking things out on Rotoworld and other sources and taking the latest news and rumors into account when making your pick. On the other hand, to not pick when the draft gets to you, and to make the other 14 owners wait, just so you'll be on the clock IF some news breaks in the next eight hours is bush-league (and other non-family-friendly adjectives).

That's an abnormally fast draft, 5.5 rounds a day is smoking.

If people want to know how the early DCs are going, here's the details:
3 DCs are completed
#4 is in Round 49 on Day 21
#5 is in Round 31 on Day 13
#6 is in Round 33 on Day 9
#7 is in Round 39 on Day 8
#8 is in Round 24 on Day 6
#9 is in Round 8 on Day 3
#10 starts today at 1 pm

I appreciate the diligence of the early drafters. Many of them are using 1 Round Auto Pick and keeping these DCs moving along nicely. Good job all.

Had not considered the impact the Winter Meetings might have on the pace of the DC leagues. I entered a later DC last year in the heart of spring training and it was clear that a couple of owners stalled each day as games were taking place. While within the rules to do so, it really killed the enjoyment of the draft. The draft did not conclude until the day before opening day and required the time clock to be cut back to an hour or two in the final days. There are benefits to drafting both early and late, but maybe the optimal time to draft is between January and mid-February.

I'm in the same draft as you and haven't noticed a serious slowdown because of the winter meetings. The draft isn't the speediest I've been in, but not the slowest either. There's one drafter who's slow in this draft and has been slow in others that I've been in. On the other hand you are a lightning fast drafter (no comment on quality ). Maybe you should join a DC Express to see if that suits you?
